Old (2021)
I wouldn't include it on my resume...
It's just a whole lot of nothing. The acting is awful, the camera angles are senseless and there is hardly a plot, no climax, no continuity other than scenes of people running from one end of the beach to the other. I ended up fast forwarding through it and still couldn't wait for it to end. And nobody got very old. I was expecting scary, dried up old monsters...or something...anything, please. The shiny thing on the hillside wasn't explained, though it was easy to figure out who that was; and the things from the hotel buried in the sand went no further than being discovered. And many of the conversations were ones people would never have. Glad I didn't have to pay for this one.
Salem Witch Trials (2002)
Mean Girls, Pilgrim-Style
Too long, too loud, could have cut out the first 90 minutes. The ones acting witchy were all those mean teens. I do wish this had been a more in-depth, true to history movie, rather than the nonsensical, mish-mash this was. When you have actors such as Alley, MacLaine, and DeMornay, you kinda expect more. I looked forward to this, especially given the positive reviews, but was disappointed and really glad it cost me only .99 cents to watch it...whilst multitasking because it was kinda boring. It's an interesting time in history, but would have been better served with a more streamlined, less screechy, portrayal,
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Terrifying messages...
Though I agree this film dragged and lacked a solid plot and finale, the messages the G. H. character relayed were sobering, and probably ring true to more of a degree than we'd like to admit...the "white cabal," the "no one's in charge"....and the possibilities of civil war. With the Obamas as producers, it made me wonder what they know; and if a movie was the best way to make a point. A lot of the behaviors in this movie have more readily surfaced in recent years, such as prepper behavior, people openly arming and brandishing guns, and black people knowing they don't have to kowtow to anyone, ever, because of their skin color.. And "don't tread on me" vs "why won't you help and share what you have" come face-to-face in this film.
Rambling Rose (1991)
Excellent film, EXCEPT...
I will never recommend it because of the bed scene between the two main characters. Never would I want anyone to think I condone a sex act between an adult and a child.
But the scene where Mother gives the doctor and her husband the what-for for suggesting a hysterectomy to cure Rose's nymphomania is Oscar-worthy.
Ladd, Dern, Haas and Duvall never disappoint in the perfectly casted story about eccentric southerners and a simple, young woman hungry for love and acceptance. And I found the mystery about Rose's mostly good health interesting, in that as a child from a poverty stricken family, what they ate during hard times.
Sans the DernHaas sex scene, I would highly recommend it, as it is an otherwise charming story.
Faithfully Yours (2022)
I'm so glad....
The characters stood in a circle at the end explaining what happened and why....so I'd understand what happened and why. Sort of. Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalallalalallallalalalallalalalalalalalallalallalallalalallalalallalallalallalallalalalallalalallalallalalalallalalalalalalalalalalallalalqlalalalalalalalallalallalalalalalalallalalalalalallalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalallalalalalallalalalalallalalalallalalalalaloaallalalallalalalalalalalalalalalalalallalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalallalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalalallalalalalala
Alalalallalalalalallalalalalallalalallalalalalalallalala.
There, 600 character minimum character count achieved.
Let Him Go (2020)
It was ok, entertained me for a couple of hours.
Like other reviewers, I found Lane's character self centered to the point of sacrificing others. When she told Lorna she wanted to take the boy without inviting her too, I thought "how awful." Then when she didn't ask Peter to go home with her, I thought, "ugh." I've always believed in any relationship, one loves more than the other, and that's true of Costner's character. Lane's put herself first, Costner's sacrificed himself for her desires. The Weboy Family...well, I've known a family or two that ferocious and led by heartless matriarchs and where the next generation or two follow that hateful and controlling lead. All in all, the movie was an okay watch, entertaining, but left me definitely not liking the characters in it. Hopefully it wasn't based on a true story.
King Kong Lives (1986)
Yikes, she's a redhead with big boobs...
First sighting of She Kong I almost choked on my cocktail. I tilted my head and had to squint to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing...a breast endowed gorilla, with red hair highlights. I'm surprised she wasn't wearing lipstick.
Next was Kong himself in surgery with mighty big surgical tools for clamping, rib spreading, and gauze the size of cotton candy. The needle for stitches was was a two-handed, put your back into it, operation, blood splurting, et all. OH, OH !...and when Kong swept his red-headed, well endowed gal into his arms, saving her from bulldozers and gunfire, their gazes of adoration damned near brought a tear to my eye. Later, when Kong ate a gator by snapping it in two, he made a frog wince in disgust. The anticipation of said frog about to hork was nearly the highlight of the whole dang movie.
The drama! The emotion! The long, loving looks filled with sorrow, yet true love...it was almost too much to bear.
Should we talk about the beer drinking, gun toting, overload the boat, rednecks out to get 'em a grrrrella!??
Nah. Tune in fans, don't miss this masterpiece of cinema with thrills, spills and true romance.
(WHAT was Linda Hamilton thinking?)
Wednesday (2022)
A different level of...
Creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky, and I'm usually first in line for ooky....however, THIS is not that, nor what I expected. I was first kind of shocked this historically family-oriented show was bloody and violent. Then it got kinda monotonous and a bit boring. Yes, I made it through the whole series....while cleaning house, folding clothes, cooking and pestering my dogs. That said, I must confess, I'm an intense watcher of good stuff, sometimes watching things over and over, never missing a thing, and discovering more each viewing...like Joker, Scarface, Silence of the Lambs. But once is enough watching Wednesday. I too, was a bit disappointed in how Gomez was cast with Luis Guzman. I enjoy his work, but cast here, was a chemistry mismatch for Zeta-Jones. Jenna Ortega, cast as Wednesday, can certainly hold her own and I think is an up and coming, attractive and talented actress. I would be compelled to watch her in something else. Regarding Uncle Fester, I heard him before I saw him and thought surely, it was Steve Buscemi. Nope. Fred Armisen. As for Wednesday, shame on her for belittling and bullying Thing, whom she counted on a lot.
The Watcher (2022)
Entertaining, good casting.
I'm a big fan of Bobby Cannevale and especially Margo Martindale since seeing her in Osage County. In The Watcher she did not disappoint! And Naomi Watts is great in everything she does. Twisty and turny and making you believe at different points each character could be the guilty one, I was okay with the multi-layered, better pay attention ending. The ending, meh, but still worth watching just to watch the main characters. What the story did not explain was who the tunnel runner was and why the tunnel was used and went to the other particular house. I really enjoyed seeing Mia Farrow as well. Who knew such a little lady, well into her senior years now, could project such a wacky and forceful talking character. Also, the two husbands that formerly lived in the house were brilliantly cast, both being the other side of creepy and superbly playing their parts.
Diario de un Gigoló (2022)
Pure Novella, I enjoyed it....
A bit over dramatic in parts, but I found the one shocking thing after another happenings believable and fitting and Drama 101. The woman who played Mitou also played the maid in Babel. She really unabashedly gives her characters her all. I'll watch for more of her work. Lots of pretty men, no complaints there and always visually pleasurable. Ana, too, was a bold portrayal. I didn't think the woman who played Julia was the right fit chemistry-wise for the Emanuel character, but this wasn't an award winning series, rather just a kinda pay attention, somewhat entertaining one. Once was enough. An ok, "Who done it."
Monsters (2022)
Well done, dragged, but very little.and gruesome
Imagine being so lonely that you are compelled to eat someone's flesh in order to feel any semblance of companionship or love....something none of us can even begin to comprehend, and so very, very sick and unforgivable.
This series, I think, portrays the madness of Jeffrey Dahmer very well. He said, in real life, he wasn't insane, (and he was above average intelligence). Interesting, and certainly debatable, the insane bit, but possibly true.
I thought a couple of episodes dragged a little bit, but I found the back stories of all the people so horribly fractured during his life very sad, tragic, and long-lasting...some, still to this day.
After I watched this, I pulled up the official FBI reports of his interviews. Much of what was portrayed was true to life. There were a couple of gruesome surprises in the FBI report. Nothing was ever mentioned about him drinking from donated blood bags, which when I saw that on the series, found it somewhat unbelievable... I don't know if that truly happened.
And I knew Silence of the Lambs was heavily based on Dahmer, and this series indeed showed the parallels between his life and that movie, like the head in a jar and the basement, which in true life, was his grandmother's basement.
I was surprised to see that it was Molly Ringwald who played the second wife/stepmother. I did not recognize her. And Richard Jenkins playing his father Lionel, was exceptional in portraying the plethora of emotions that poor man went through. I do think they portrayed Dahmer's actual mother more kooky than she really was.... I mean walk a mile in her shoes. Crikey. Though she has since passed away, she garnered high praises for her work with HIV positive people. And I hope his grandmother was as fearless as she was portrayed. That was Michael Learned who is better known playing the mother in The Waltons.
Other characters I thought brilliantly portrayed were Reverend Jesse Jackson and Dahmer's next-door neighbor, Glenda Cleveland, who died at a young 56 years of age in the early 2000's, from heart failure/cigarettes. Her wish for the lot where the apartment building once stood to become a memorial park never came about, as even today the lot sits empty and overgrown.
I'm not sure how I feel about them showing actual photographs of what they found in his apartment. Imagine being someone even six degrees of separation from those horrible events, viewing this series. Truly the stuff nightmares are made of. And images that can never be erased from the mind.
I binge watched this in one day, thought it was well done considering the subject matter, and once was enough.
My first comment about "being so lonely, compelled to consume flesh," triggered a weird memory. When I was 11 or 12 years old I was sitting astride a horse in an alleyway inside a barn. There was a pretty little fair-haired girl I had not seen before, and probably six or seven years old, playing with some barn kittens. I guess I said hello to her, because she looked up at me hugging a kitten and said, "I love these kittens so much I want to eat them."
No Man of God (2021)
Luke Kirby's portrayal of Bundy....
Absolutely stunning, riveting, creepy and realistic. Where he pulls up that terror and darkness for that performance is masterful. Those deep breaths, that tilted headset, and monster in his eyes...well, he deserves lots of awards and accolades.
I've never seen Elijah Wood in anything other than trailers for the hobbit trilogy. It took a minute for me to accept him as a man, rather than boy. But he's good and holds his own with Kirby's masterful performance.
Though the film had a couple of "artsy parts," the woman observing while filming, and Wood's character reacting to Bundy's final confession, I was transfixed beginning to end.
Million Dollar Beach House (2020)
Three words....
Shut up Peggy.
Oh, I need more characters to post...
Shut up Peggy and let other agents do their job without your interruptions. You're rude, and not all that.
Extreme Engagement (2019)
Binge watched and conclusions...
I agree with other reviewers that PJ especially, insulted different tribes with her facial expressions and comments. As far as each of them goes, why would a guy sign up for a lifetime with a woman who obviously doesn't share his enthusiasm for sex? She says no A LOT. And the dealbreaker for me would have been at the end of the show when they were shark fishing. If I was that terrified and getting sick in the sun and my man didn't call it... That would be the dealbreaker. I actually felt at that moment that he could get manically violent. All that said, he pretty much bullied her into many things she didn't want to do, and she was a bossy nag. But he did tag her on her deeply seeded feeling of failure. That did need identifying, as did his fear of abandonment and desperation for commitment.
Windfall (2022)
Ok, with a "you go girl" ending.
I wanted to watch this especially since Jesse Plemons was in it. I really enjoyed his character in "The Power of the Dog." And Lily Collins is up-and-coming which is interesting and I enjoyed watching her make her mark. I've never seen much that Jason Segel was in but what an interesting character he played pulling off somebody not so smart. The movie was a little slow starting, but got better. And it had a couple of surprises that I certainly didn't see coming including what happened to the gardener. I recommend it. It's a pretty good movie.
The Ice Road (2021)
Don't just stand there....
Mercy, I would have hauled ass more than once rather than stand and stare at catastrophes about to happen. That said, Liam Neeson always holds my attention. Also, I'm glad the noise wasn't earsplitting, but the mild soundtrack didn't match the action, and I noticed. I would have to say the movie was entertaining but fell short of realistic. It was ok. Served it's purpose - a flick during dinner that you didn't have to concentrate on.
Monster on the Campus (1958)
OY...the first line in the movie....
" Ah, the human female in the perfect state - helpless and silent." ....thereafter, not a bad Saturday matinee flick...corny, predictable, lots of beasts. Hokey entertainment.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Slow moving, surprise ending.
I wasn't expecting the seemingly most vulnerable character to be who he was shown to be in the last two minutes of the film. I glad I stuck with it. Throughout the movie I kept thinking this or that was going to happen, but what did, I certainly didn't predict.
In a Valley of Violence (2016)
3 hockers only 20 minutes in....
Spit, spitting, its splatter and seeing it happen, which is always an unexpected and most unpleasant surprise, is one of the most disgusting things in the world. Seeing 3 characters with the first 20 minutes hork up and spew hockers about did me in. The next ten minutes was perhaps the worst acted scene I've ever witnessed and performed by Ms. Farmiga, even with the well respected Hawke sharing the stage. Not only does she rapid fire her dialog like a sub machine gun, she does it badly. I had high hopes considering who her mama is. Nope. Pile on a bunch of hokey adorabilities the dog performs, with bubbles and everything, and I had to look behind me to make sure no one was seeing me watch this, this.... I don't even know what to call it. Enter Travolta.... maybe a save? Meh. Then later, round the campfire the man coos to his dog like no man has ever talked to me. Sheesh. Now is the dog-killing scene....depending on how much the dog suffers will determine if I jump ship.....ok, bad guy STILL yapping.....ok, thanks for not showing a screen shot of the dog dying. However, I see it's 9:30 am....the day is distracting me and this mov.
Medusa (2015)
I kept fast forwarding....
Looking for the good part. Never found it. An hour I'll never get back. Slow, boring, and I keep writing words until this says my review is long enough to post.
Ma (2019)
Figured it out quickly...
But for a Sunday afternoon's entertainment while it was raining, it was a decent flick. I certainly didn't expect the lip thing. That nearly pushed it into the horror genre for me. Octavia makes anything interesting, as she's pure talent and fearless. So I rate this good enough entertaining and once was enough.
Silent Witness (1985)
If ever a man....
EVER got in my face and spoke to me like the way the prosecuting attorney spoke to the women in this movie, I'd poke the a-hole in the eyeball. So the movie...good made for TV movie subject, but the acting, meh. And the editing, .....better to move along a little more briskly. Savage, Bertanelli, Leo and Thomas, aka John-Boy, (whose always extra creepy when he plays a creep), all hold their own for what this is. But still, that prosecuting attorney.... I'd thump him smak-dab middle of his Adam's Apple. Thwat!
The Man Next Door (1996)
What Herrick416 said
Though mid budget, a tad overly dramatic, and only one glitch in the rapist's reactions acting-wise, this is a bold and pretty well put together little film. It is no holds barred on the harsh and violent subjects, with characters going nose-to-nose on rarely discussed happenings in sex crimes. Bravo, I say - glad I watched it.
The Sinner (2017)
Sloooooooooowwwwwwww
Crikey, get on with it. Good storyline, good acting, but could have been a two hour made for TV movie.
The Cartier Affair (1984)
Hokey
Collins is her usual over-the-top actress, so much so she can't even pull off being funny. And Hasselhoff is just hard to look at as he seems like a living, breathing cartoon character. Big oaf "David" is a live action Bluto. And every other character is just that, poorly character acting. I can appreciate silly, stupid, hokey comedies, but this one didn't even pull that off. Boo.
