Smile 2 (2024)
Fails to Outshine the Prequel
I'm a hardcore thriller buff yet Smile actually won me over instantly. Much to my anticipation, Smile 2 left me semi-content. Very stylish follow-up indeed; yet Skye Riley's dilemma clearly overshadows the lore. Much less body count and encounters with the 'infected' that lead up to their suicide. Absence of tracking down series of previous victims lessened viewers' involvement in the buildup. At least progressively speaking, sequel should've shed some light onto origins of the entity and/or ways of disrupting the chain of infection, other then the deduced. Still the premise holds so much potential yet future sequels need to be more focused and bold. Suppose the last person witnessing suicide of the infected has Dementia or in a coma. Yet just by reading synopsis of Smile 2, one can predict its finale as well as what creators have in store for Smile 3 at least by its sheer scale of the infected.
Ryad 19 (2021)
Original scenario, poignant thriller ...hidden gem
I was pleasantly surprised with this little wonder. Overall film is worthy of 7/10 but I added 2 pts. For the original writing; another 2 pts. Because it starts out as a supernatural thriller (I'd refrain from calling it horror,) where anti-hero is in fact a hero in disguise and ends as a poignant touching drama. Plot offers lots of twists. While watching, one goes through a diverse range of emotions. You question true nature of what makes a person evil or what qualifies one as a villain?
Certainly a memorable thriller that I'd be revisiting in years to come.
It is a hidden gem among all clichè-ridden films that populate thriller genre nowadays.
Odwilz (2022)
So much potential yet all wasted on pointless whiney kid drama
I second my fellow commentor, smashcut' s review to the t as it voices common frustration of majority of us Euro-noir bingers. Creators need to decide whether the series will be a gripping, compelling thriller/police procedural or a cocktail of mainstream drama with thrilling crime infusions. And why resort to that kind of desperation when you have a such a compelling thriller with high potential at hand?
This is a much sophisticated screenplay to be wasted on cheap stereotypical soap drama. Please leave that to daytime...of course unless you wish to be in the same vagon with all mainstream H. Coben adaptations..if so we bid you Farewell.
Dræberne fra Nibe (2017)
Engaging, Witty and Hilarious ..Fun ride from start to the end
This brilliant film is among my top unforgettable comedy flicks as I've seen it 6 times over the course of 7 years with different circle of friends. Each time it got us rolling up in laughter. Acting performances of entire ensemble is mesmerizing and legendary actors Ulrich Thomsen and Nicholas Bro are outstanding. Character buildup is colourfully multi layered and all characters are adorable, heartwarming. I'll recommend it as an instant non-pharmaceutical pick-me-up.
Hard to comprehend all the harsh negative comments. Exceptional writing and direction so kudos to the master behind the marvel, Mr. Ole Bornedal.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
Despite Legendary Comedy Icons the show is a let down
Big fan of beloved Steve Martin and I watched all his films up until 2000s. They're all outstanding flicks that I enjoy revisiting. Martin Short is also an unforgettable iconic comedian. His Saturday night show sketches are unforgettable. So I was so psyched to watch this show when I saw the cast. Unfortunately I barely made it to the end of the first episode. I'm a mystery fan and NYC is my second home..so again in the beginning I was so excited as both genre and location felt so close to heart. For me major disappointment is the plot. I mean the mystery element appeared too 'manufactured' and 'imposed upon viewer' even if it is not gripping enough in essence. Just not engaging enough. It lacks the level of sophistication required to make it intriguing.
Dialogues are less than witty and humour falls far from sarcasm. Mostly sounding corny. Perhaps I found it flat because I'm more of a black comedy lover. Mystery factor faded away underneath sitcom appeal. Plus Selena Gomez's poor monotone performance didn't help.
Informacja zwrotna (2023)
Amazing Acting Performance and Fascinating Scenario
Lead character is spot on...felt so close to heart from the start...we loved him...wanted to reach out and hug him through his struggles. Don't reckon generations from Millennium and after, can appreciate this show as much as us (peeps who are 45+ today) lot do. What a marvel the lead actor is!...we totally relished his performance. Screenwriter definitely deserves our Kudos. Witty script, well acted keeps us at our toes. This is a Show that calls for 100% of your attention..you miss out if you read an incoming message on your phone. Full of twists..manages to keep suspense in tact till the end. Amazing drama and Fascinating Crime Drama all tossed in one. WE absolutely adore this Piece of Art of a TV Series.
The Gentlemen (2024)
Always been a great fan of Mr.Ritchie's flicks..but this is stretched far too long
As said in the title, much of a fan of Mr. Ritchie's films. I was thrilled to hear about this project. Mr. Ritchie's format is well known. Charicature characters, witty stories embedded, pause and laugh format. All is well except perhaps the choice of lead. Mr. Theo James is an actor ,guaranteed to deliver same level of acting everytime. Joe Cole would've been a better choice. As delivering the same level of acting each time, over years, translates into average acting. Kaya on the other hand pleasantly surprised us by delivering more subtle impressions. Joely Richardson is pure class as expected. Max Beesely exceptional. Vine Beloved Jones quite forthcoming , Mr. Ray Winterson does what he does best. Was it Nigel playing as Tipsy?? Oh my that should be the very definition of superb acting
Attempted dry humour bit corny and forced.
Delightful tweed jackets...so much appreciate the effort costume design. Also exceptional soundtrack and location.
The Walking Dead (2010)
Dear Mr.Daramont ..what is the catch?
Born in 1969, seen millions of shows, taught hundreds in screenwriting workshops, yet fail to understand the chewing gum worthy stretch in storyline. Do you sleep well at night? Cuz your show is contaminating minds of brilliant new generations..please get a grip and...let their analytic juices flow by not being greedy and let go the whole Walking Dead franchise..you Know you owe it to young generations..please do Not be so greedy. They cannot develop analytical skills on this premise. How dare you reason that it is for new generations? Phew..honestly how do you sleep at night???
Not judgemental by personality , I watched millions of TV shows, films up until this age of 55, Mr. Darmont please seek creativity..your shows are only successful marketing launches..do not kid yourself.
Beforeigners (2019)
Series that makes you feel lucky to be alive and watch it
Loads could be said about this entertaining yet riveting thriller.
Don't you love the subtle underneath thriller that grabs you in its clinch.
Sooo much more..this show is daring enough to ask viewer to browse through buildup, database of literature, theatre, films, artists, poets, philosophers, all that paved way to accumulated intelligence..Definitely one of few best Telly Shows. Divine sense of humour. Shows of this superior calibre unfortunately 'needs ' explanation for the clueless. Sorry luv but this is a grownup show with very mesmerizing remarks. Some are well informed despite their age to appreciate and some don't..that's how the cookie crumbles love:)
Frikjent (2015)
Still cannot snap out of this Show's grip
I clearly don't understand where fellow reviewers that dismiss this masterpiece as a soap are coming from. I second what said in the title. Every 5 years I revisit this series and each time feel goosebumps.
Script is gripping drama with thriller undertone subtly yet progressively builds up until it overtakes drama.
Some may argue that this show, mainly banks on enchanting scenery...translating into exquisite cinematography...not alone and not by a long shot.
For me WoW factor is immaculate acting performances by entire ensemble.
As a theater frequenter, I relished each episode as if I was enjoying a masterpiece from first row. Actors' performances are jaw-droppingly striking. Perfection only defined by passing on each mood-swings to viewer with least body language and superb expression direction, voice altering, consciously highlighted gasping, pausing, breathing. Exceptional is how I would describe this show. Because I cannot think of many amongst millions of shows that I've seen for the last 35 years that managed to leave such an unshakable grip on me. This show is for keepers...make no mistake about it.
Hightown (2020)
Colossal Flop...Hideous Acting All-around
This much lousy acting should be fined. Seriously the leading lass, Monica Raymond Cannot Act at all. She made the whole xps for us an utter agony to follow. Not a pleasant look either. Rest of the ensemble falls apart too. Script is soo pathetic that makes you wonder whether a bunch of random folk have been abducted and forced to come up with a plot under duress.
Perhaps young inexperienced viewers might enjoy the whole partying aspect projected..(Gosh one cannot help but feel so sorry for new generations that clearly are clueless of party culture of the 90's) ...but news flash this is not the real deal.
Writers of the show clearly know nothing about lifestyle of dipsos, on/off wagon mood swings. Character portrayals are not realistic. Sex scenes are crap...no nudity, no realistic shagging choreography...no due respect and effort. All too fake. All too rushed.
Story goes nowhere, no direction.
Episodes following the first lead up to nowhere. Soon you realize that it is Not a crime show...Nope it is Not an Organised Crime show as there are only low-life dealers who think they're gangsta. Sad sad attempt really.
How such cluessly written garbage is financed?
Forst (2024)
Not Scandi but cunningly written delightful Noir!
Not for viewers with attention disorders..a sophisticated crime drama with eloquent body dispositions. Being an insatiable dark crime thriller buff, I devoured the season..enjoyed every minute of suspense. Once ended, I craved for more. Main character build up was spot on! I instantly loved detective forst..felt close to my heart. Since DCI Søren of 'Brøn/Broen', it's been a while to come across such lovable detective characters..well not until Forst here and Jass and Mika , from 'the Mire'. Setting , acting, cinemography, screenwriting all superb. It is an engaging show as your mind races to figure out the motive behind the crimes. I relished the urge to unearth the psychological profile of the culprit.
Quite entertaining. I'll definitely recommend.
Rojst (2018)
Outstanding Drama Series that succeeds Outdoing itself with each Season
How many shows that you know manages to do that? You think first season was superb..then after streaming the second, you are pleasantly at awe that it's even better...I tell you wait till you stream the third.
Exquisite show that is very rewarding for meticulous viewer. It is like a mesmerizing wall tapestry where each intricate plot (motif) is woven with much perfection.
Sophisticated layout of interweaving plots all gracefully ties up...This Show cannot be rushed, fastforwarded or binged while multitasking..it deserves full attention of the viewer. Definitely gonna be a staple in my Archive of Lifetime Favorite Dramas to be Revisited.
1670 (2023)
Rare when you stumble upon a witty comedy
God knows, since "The Hundred Year Old Man who Jumped out of a window and Disappeared ', I can't say that I found same satisfaction in any comedy of kind.
This ain't the same perhaps but it's nearing
This show is equal to 3x Prozacs..so make sure you have it on your face flicks' list... if needed. SO uplifting, such amazing acting, location, costumes, camera, choreography, dances, music And especially Hats...
Plus When is the last time you find yourself watching a TV Show where All characters are Adorable??
Costumes, Location, Hats, Script,Costumes,Dialogues, location, art direction, camera, direction are all superb.
Loved casually dropped innuendo and dry humor and sarcastic yet kind references.
This is a MUST see show to relish. Hope there will be a second season..Gosh We missed it soon as it ended:((
You do Not wish to leave them when it ends..You Rather be in the set With them.
The Nurse (2023)
I had shivers through and through.Top-notch Acting ensemble
What a powerful dramatization of an actual heinous series of acts. ! As found myself glued to the screen early on. Soon after came the shivers. At one point I seriously felt shakes, stomach churning and by the last scene, and ears came falling quietly down my cheeks That's how compelling writing, directing, acting. I binged entire season in one sit. Though it has been a week since it is fair to say the show still has me in its grip.
Acting performances are way above par. I saw a bit of me and bits of my friends in Christina and Pernille. I had a close friend that not only looked exactly like Christina but also bore same personality, behavioural patterns of her as well. So , retrospectively speaking , on a personal level, it was poignant experience to revisit my memories of her through Christina. Character-building is deep, multi-layered, meticulously written. Don't miss out this compelling thriller/biographical drama brought to you by trusted Danish excellence:)
You Are Wanted (2017)
Could'nt even focus on the plot due the casting
Indeed spent entire second season pining for Hanna and Leon to Die. Have'nt completed second season yet extremely bothered by casting choices. Why on earth you pick such DAFT characters as Hanna and Leon?? Can't bear to watch the lead, risking everything for undesirable Hanna and Leon
Storyline, direction, acting is above Par..yet Casting is WHAT removes Our motive from
watching further. Lead is exceptional...As it does not depict real life, your choices or Casting sucks. Such an unlikable wife and kid.. Simply do not know what your motive is??.
We do need Scandi Noir back in Europe
Please do come back.
Dam (2021)
Hats off to Mr. Yazbek!!
'Excellence on all grounds' is how I can summarise this show. Minding you this is first South African show that I've ever watched. Not accessable unfortunately in Turkey.
As a lifetime thriller buff, I found DAM sooo refreshingly nouvelle
Plus from casting, direction, scenario, location, costume design, cinemography, editing..as said on all grounds this show is epic.
Last time I recall feeling this content by all attributes of a TV series dates back to Tom Fontana's Borgia, which also was epic.
If I've learned anything about reviews in my 50+ years is that if a show gets exceptionally bad and superior ratings..that is clear indication of success. Having said that let's move on to...
Why this show deserves 10/10? In bullets...
" Exceptional Cinemography..check
" Sensible Casting...check
" Spot on Location..check
" Impressive acting performance by entire ensamble of Great Actors..check
" Multi-layered grift character-building..check
" Pagan/ mythical background well established..check
" Script is to die for on many layers..soo sophisticated..soo refreshing ..check
" Direction is sublime...check
Here comes my confession...
While binging ..let me describe my xp
It feels like a rollercoaster ride..in plain words
Soo well executed..this show offers you all issues deemed political at times but emminent parts of reality..
Wish we here can access to more of your exceptional work. Mr. Yazbek.
Carnival Row (2019)
Casting probs galore..only watched the show cos of Tamzin Merchant
4 out of ten..one owed to Tamzin, one to brill decor, one to costume design, one to all cast except Cara and Orlando..
A show that is immensely financed yet delivers short of all expectations.
Excuse Moi but darlimg Cara shpuld stick to modelling..horrid performance through and through
Mr. Bloom..despite all efforts..you still look like someone who is old as Cara's father..and Cara darling..much better if you stick to modeling .. For the Greater Good
Horrid acting and screen magnatism on Cara's part..pathetic looking for Bloom..
What about the rest??... Whichever direction you push..it is an original idea executed to a sour end
Yet costumes, decors..everything involved in creating the realm is amazing...Just wish more celestial characters like nymphs were included....
Come on..you cannot go far with only pixies
Tamzin Merchant ruled the show.
Into the Night (2020)
Utter Torture to watch
Please don't get me wrong..I do love anti-heroes but in this case, I clearly do not wish to support a trafficker as one.
Actors' performance is remarkable..so no shortcomings there.
Despite all its flows ever since the crew left British soldiers behind I clearly expected the provocteurs to be punished namely Ayaz, the Pilot and Jacob ..till the end.
Not only that didn't happen but Sylvie's heinous act of leaving Tenezio to die, also gone unpunished..
Never I've found myself truely hating whole ensemble of characters in a TV series like this one..Was that the objective of the senarist ?? So cringe worthy please do yourself a favour and stay clear.of this piece of trash.
Un beau soleil intérieur (2017)
Realistic Depiction of exhaustive search of true intimacy
I don't recall any other time when I related with a protagonist in a film this much. Every aspect of the lead character, Isabelle was portraying me ...some much so that I felt 'naked' emotionally. Claire Denis is a living legend. Juliette Binoche is an amazing actress...definitely a performance worthy of an Oscar
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Skimming down won't help
As a woman, I 've found the whole storyline ...degrading. Seriously trying sooo very repulsively hard to denounce the very elements ,just to exploit on sexual differences on stimuli
