Frasier: My Brilliant Sister (2024)
Olivia's in a dither over her sister!
This episode was great. Olivia's older sister, Monica, comes to Boston for a visit and rubs in the fact that she's far better off than Olivia with her husband and their lifestyle. So, when she asks her if she's seeing anyone, Olivia pretends to have a boyfriend but doesn't know who to get and tells Eve who tells Freddy to find her someone good-looking to pose as her bf at a Harvard tailgate party Frasier is giving. So, Monica meets him and is quite impressed. But then, Freddy, also shows up as her bf and Olivia calls them both Marc(k). Monica is understandably confused and decides to ask questions to see which one is better for Olivia. In the meantime, Frasier is trying to find a reclusive Estonian author who's supposed to be at his party also to show him a manuscript and ends up insulting him. The best episode so far this season! Watch it and roll on the floor laughing!
Monsters (2022)
The stellar cast made up for a weak, overdone script!
Another rehash of The Menendez Brothers! The mini-series was unnecessarily long and retreads the same material after episode 5 which was the shortest and best episode between Erik and his lawyer. Producer Ryan Murphy took a good stab at this however with a top-rated cast: Javier Bardem, Chloe Sevigny, and Dallas Roberts. Two newcomers, Cooper Koch (Erik) and Nick Chavez (Lyle) did a stellar acting job as the brothers as well as Ari Graynor (Leslie Abramson). The emphasis on Nathan Lane's character added little substance. The sexual abuse part of their story was important to cover no matter how explicit it was. There was a lot more to the trials that was left out and the ending was rather anti-climactic. In comparison to Monsters: Season 1: Dahmer, Season 2 was tiresome and repetitive with 9 episodes. But there will be a Season 3 with Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein to try telling another Monsters story. Can't wait.
The Bad Orphan (2024)
Bizarro movie!
This was billed as a drama. They should've add the word unbelievable to it. No one believes the actress who played Gabby is 8 years old. So, to start from that premise was ridiculous. The rest of it was a bad borrow from Orphan, which was a real hit thriller from decades ago. The movie has a very uneven start. Jess and Karl have a teen daughter, Rhiannon, who will be off to college in a few years. They will be empty-nesters and Jess' clock is ticking down. She wants to adopt a baby but she is too old so they end up adopting a European orphan who is a special needs child, instead. Gabby is rude and has major problems adjusting to the family. She doesn't want to take a bath, takes stuff from Rhiannon without asking, and gives the family a lot of nasty back talk. As the movie progresses, Gabby does some things that makes Jessica highly suspicious of her thinking she's a threat to the family but is she right? The young lady who played Gabby was in her first movie role and did a fine job. Too bad, she couldn't have been cast in a better movie! Rather disappointing but watchable.
A Deadly Threat to My Family (2024)
Dumb movie
Serena Harris is an escapee from a cult after testifying against the leader, Aleph, who gets put away for 30 years. They made a suicide pact after believing the world would end and that they would all "rise" in 5 days. Her brother and his wife welcome her back and allow her to stay in a guest house where she puts up little hanging triangle sticks for protection against the Builders of Ascension cult who send one of its members named Laurel to her and ask her to groom the daughter of the couple who is interested in the cult. Once the mother finds out about what she's up to, she gets very protective of the daughter and watches Serena's every move but is she just overreacting? The husband thinks so since he paints her sister as a victim in the movie. This movie reminds me a little of the NVIVM cult with a little Blair Witch thrown in but way over the top. Skip it!
Locked in My House (2024)
Don't take the law into your own hands!
Caris and Jon are trying to have a baby and she goes for an IVF treatment at a fertility clinic. Unfortunately, she's been assigned to a doctor who sexually takes advantage of her on the examining table and the cops won't listen because he's a highly respected doctor. She puts her experience online and finds that many women complain about this doctor. So, they form a support group. Caris later follows the doctor drunk and on the railroad tracks where she ends up locking him up in her basement and wants to make him pay for abusing so many women who have come forward with their own sad stories. Vigilante justice has consequences, though.... Recommended but I wouldn't call it a thriller, just tense drama!
Secret Life of the Pastor's Wife (2024)
Not your squeaky clean pastor and his wife!
This Lifetime movie was one of the better ones this year, so far. Quite the thriller with a good, fast-moving script and a strong ensemble cast. Pastor Jim and Angie Martin run a local church. They have a lovely teen, and a beautiful home with a pool! Sounds perfect, right? Except Angie finds out that Jason, the dude who she hires to clean the pool is hot and her marriage has been ice cold. Jim treats her like a trophy wife but their marriage is a sham. She is lonely for affection and has a one-night stand with the pool boy. Realizing later on that she made a regrettable mistake, Angie tries to break it off with Jason but he wants to keep seeing her despite her being married. Unexpected plot twists and quite a few interesting characters thrown into the mix produce a great story! DEFINITELY recommended and highly entertaining!
Living with My Mother's Killer (2024)
Pretty good!
A woman named Mara loses her mother to a mysterious accident at the bed and breakfast she runs. A boy that Mara likes named Carson is framed for her murder and goes to prison but did he actually do it? 14 years pass and Mara now runs the place along with her stepsister, Joy. Mara has forgiven Carson but Joy hasn't. Mara has been writing to him in prison and when he's released, he ends up going to see her and finds out she still cares for him. In exchange for being a handyman, she offers him free room and board. Mara draws closer to him again in the hope that he can help her remember what happened the night that her mother was murdered because she needs closure and gets dizzy spells and panic attacks. What happens next is a pretty good plot twist! The movie has some continuity flaws but a good script and some solid Canadian actors make it a watcher!
My Acting Coach Nightmare (2024)
Interesting movie.....but predictable
Sienna is a lovely girl who wants to go to Hollywood and has the chance to participate in an acting workshop with an acting tutor, Max Frost, before she heads off to college. So, she asks her mother, Lisa, who reluctantly gives her OK. Sienna and her friend, Amy, join the workshop and meet Max Frost. Sienna is taken with Max who seems to see great acting talent in her as he asks all of the participants to read for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The girl who currently was picked to be Juliet is replaced by Sienna and Max starts taking special interest in her and takes her under his wing with individual after-hours coaching. Uh-oh. Viewers know where this movie is heading. Max has ulterior motives. But what are they and how does Sienna fit in? This is worth a watch with Cameron Jebo as baddie Max. Not bad as far as Lifetime movies go and worth a look!
The Man in the Guest House (2024)
Meh, ok....
This is supposed to be a thriller but I was far from thrilled after watching it. Brandon and Ashley Burke are a couple who need to make some extra income so they fix up their guest house and plan to rent it out. The trouble is they lease it to the wrong tenant! Is anyone surprised by this? Dan Hansen is working on his MBA but has an ulterior motive for why he's there. Unfortunately, he 's planned to makes their lives a living hell. He says and does some things during the movie that make the couple suspicious of him and they are right to be. But why is he targeting them and is anyone else involved? The acting here is pretty wooden and this type of revenge trope is one Lifetime uses a lot. The script is good but quite predictable. It's an OK watch if you have nothing better to do!
She's Obsessed with My Husband (2024)
Vicious valentines are back at Lifetime!
Violet, a beautiful woman, has never forgotten a boy she dated in high school named Garrett, who is now married to Daisy, who also went to the same high school, and they have a daughter named Allison. Violet, who is recently divorced now, tracks the family down and buys the house next door because she is still hung up on Garrett after over 20 years later and wants to be his wife! She plots and schemes to break up Daisy and Garrett's marriage and disrupt their personal and professional lives as well as use Allison to carry out her plans. What she does to all 3 makes for a good Valentine's Lifetime movie and it all almost works when she gets Daisy out of the way and framed for murder! Alissa Filoramo does a really good job as the unhinged homewrecker. A good script and a strong cast make this a watcher! Definitely recommend!!
Tall, Dark, and Dangerous (2024)
Horrible movie, Lifetime....WHY?
Alice Miles has just been promoted to partner at a law firm but she lacks a social life and her friend, Janie, shoots a Cupid arrow to a dude Alice has been looking at on an online dating app called "Be My Valentine." Trouble is when the dude sends her back a reply and they agree to meet, Alice realizes she has been cat-fished because the dude seated doesn't look anything like the one in the app photo and she tells him nicely she doesn't appreciate being played. Chris, the impostor dude, doesn't seem to care because he just wants a Valentine's date and wants to continue seeing her and spending time with her Alice tells him not to bother her ever again but Chris has other ideas and continues to call her, stalk her, and insinuates himself into both her personal and professional life. What will Alice do to stop him? Frankly, at this point in the movie, I didn't care. This recycled trope is tedious, with horrible acting, plots holes galore, a bad script, bad direction, and is just an overall mess. Skip it..
Woman with the Red Lipstick (2024)
Skip it!
The Woman with the Red Lipstick is supposed to be a thriller but after watching it, I was far from thrilled. Lucy Compton, is a journalist with the Chicago Tribune. Her boyfriend, Roy, thinks their relationship lacks spice and has her don a blonde wig, wear red lipstick and a scarf and she's supposed to pretend she's Maggie and go to a bar where he's called Jimmy. A few days later, she's watching the news and they're reporting on a wealthy Chicago socialite named Magnolia Maines who's been missing and thinks back to the role play of Maggie. Is there a connection between Roy and the missing girl? This whodunit was predictable with flat acting and many continuity flaws by a weak Canadian cast. NOT recommended unless you're bored out of your mind.
Girl in the Video (2024)
Catfishers are still luring unsuspecting teens out there!
Disturbingly good movie! Teens Chrissy and her brother, Robbie, are still mourning the loss of their dad as well as their mother, Mo. Krissy starts texting heavily with an older boy named Toby who asks her to go to a party with him. When Krissy asks mom if she can go, Mo says no but she sneaks out later on anyway to meet him and rides her bike. When a car pulls up, Krissy knows she's been duped but it's too late and masked "Toby" kidnaps her. When Mo wakes up next day to find Krissy missing and tries calling her with no answer, she contacts the school and then the police who actually listen to her and are on it! But things go from bad to worse when one of the detectives finds a disturbing video of Krissy on the dark web and alerts Mo and Robbie. But will any of them find Krissy in time before it's too late? This is a slow-burn Lifetime movie and quite good with a solid British cast! HIGHLY recommend. Thanks, Lifetime, for raising awareness of catfishing and showing how cunning the scammers have become!!!
Secret Love Triangle (2023)
Another Lifetime whodunit!
Jess is falsely accused of murdering her gf and business partner's husband, is convicted, and sent to jail. But she ends up escaping after a clean-up detail along with her cellmate to track down the real killer and they part ways as Jess is on the run. Was it her husband, Matt, or her bf, Lori or.....someone else who set the whole thing up to frame Jess and let her take the fall for the murder of Lori' husband? That's what 2 detectives also want to know when they are alerted of her escape and try to track Jess' whereabouts.....The movie stars Brianna Cohen and Jonathan Stoddard, both solid Lifetime regulars, and another actress, Harley Bronwyn who plays Lori and rounds out the trio of main players. Well-cast and well-scripted, this is definitely worth a binge weekend watch and recommended!
Smart Home Killer (2023)
Good Lifetime movie!
This movie centers on a mother, Leah, and her high school daughter, Harper, who move into a beta smart home with an infrared camera security system and everything in the house is voice-activated by the AI software, named Soteria, and created by a mastermind electronics genius named Devon Carlo. He also has a romantic interest in Leah and is jealous of anyone who gets close to her or her daughter. That spells problems for his assistant, Wesley, who likes Harper but also knows how to program Soteria. When Wesley has a car accident, Leah gets suspicious that Devon may be behind it.... is she right? Supported by a good Canadian cast, this had a good, solid plot and is definitely recommended!!!
Saltburn (2023)
A shocking feast for the senses!
Lush cinematography, a variegated musical score, a tight ensemble cast, and strong psychosexual themes makes this movie quite the cosmic ride! Emerald Fennell with new indie film, Saltburn, does a great job, here. The story centers and is narrated by Oliver Quick, played masterfully by Barry Keoghan, who attends Oxford on a scholarship in the mid-2000's and befriends, Felix Catton, a handsome, rich, elite played by Jacob Elordi, who invites Oliver to his palatial residence, Saltburn, to wile away the lazy days of summer and mingle with his eccentric family. This movie has some jarring scenes, to put it mildly, and may repel some and titillate others. Everyone who I was with in attendance tonight were totally drawn into the Catton's world and many clapped after the movie was over. Another movie that may continue with a cult following??? Only time will tell. All I can say is go see it, take it in or spit it out and make your own judgments! Brava, Ms. Fennell for another brilliant work with fine acting and direction!
Frasier (2023)
Delightfully funny!
I am not familiar and did not watch the original series but this reboot is a HOOT. Kelsey Grammer and his grown son, Freddy, played by British actor Jack Cutmore-Scott, are well cast and make the show what it is - a laugh-out-loud and enjoyable 1/2 hour. The acting chemistry between them is excellent and believable. Cutmore-Scott shows NO trace of a Londoner accent which is no easy feat, I can tell you from experience. The "girlfriend across the hall" played by Jess Salgueiro adds to the comic element (she reminds me of Marisa Tomei in her looks) and the supporting cast of Anders Keith, Frasier's nephew, Nicholas Lyndhurst, the old prof at Harvard who Frasier shares an office with, and Toks Olagundoye who plays the head of the Psychology Dept at Harvard. The writing has a nice dash of satire thrown in each episode. I sincerely hope this WONDERFUL family show gets picked up for a 2nd season so many more viewers can meet Professor Frasier Crane and his wacky inner circle! Check it out on Paramount+ !
Stalked by My Stepsister (2023)
What's a stepsister for....
Devon, a young girl whose father, Kent, eloped while she was away in London studying, returns home. She gets introduced to her stepmother, Laura, and her daughter, Maddie who also lives in her house. Devon and Maddie don't exactly hit it off. Laura wants to re-design the house and Devon doesn't like it. After Laura takes a nasty fall, Maddie's friend, Gia, ending up in the hospital, and a potential business client having an allergic reaction to food, Devon plants some seeds of doubt in a detective's mind when he comes to visit the house to talk to Maddie about Gia. Afterward, she feels like she's a suspect and is angry at Devon. But WHY is Devon doing this? This was a good Lifetime movie for Shocktober with Eva Igo as the baddie. A strong script and good cast make this a suspenseful watch. DEFINITELY recommended....
Chucky: Dressed to Kill (2023)
Nia Vardalos guest stars on the mid-season finale!
Happy Halloween! Chucky and Tiffany make this episode a good one. Chucky is still stalking the White House and Jake, Devon, and Lexy get an invite to the White House by the president's oldest son, Grant, who likes her. But unbeknownst to him, they have a hidden agenda to find Chucky who's dressed for the occasion as the Phantom of the Opera for a Halloween bash. And those three are dressed as, what else, the Good Guys, overalls and all!
But Chucky sees them at the party and is ready for them. Meanwhile, Tiffany is waiting in prison for her sentence to death for killing her sister and is expecting a package from the outside. She meets one of her inmates, Evelyn Elliott, and they get to know each other but it ends badly. What happens in this final 2023 episode (only 4, I know) is full of surprises and some funny moments. Tune in and get entertained!!!
Handyman from Hell (2023)
He's a handyman with a score to settle!
Pretty good thriller. Maggie needs a contractor to fix up her kitchen. Enter Nate, a cute handyman with a hidden agenda who she ends up letting do the work. But her brother, Michael, is suspicious since Nate doesn't advertise online or have a social media presence with the last name he gave them. Uh-oh, that can't be good! Still. Maggie is split up from her husband and starts to fantasize about Nate and she needs someone new, exciting, and young in her life. Nate starts to grow on her and she lets him spend the night. That can't be good and it isn't. Nate is up to no good and has a devious plan. But why is he targeting her and can she stop him? This was a good watch and recommended!!!
Amish Stud: The Eli Weaver Story (2023)
Sad but true whodunit!
Eli and Barbara Weaver were an Amish couple with 2 children. Unfortunately, Barbara, ends up getting murdered but it will be hard to find the killer when 2 detectives, Chuhi and Maxwell, run into roadblocks with the Amish, who settle their own problems without ANY interference from the English (i.e. Those who aren't Amish)! Barbara's sister, Fannie, who goes by Abigail, suspects Eli because of the stories Barbara confided in her after they were married but Eli was off fishing with his friend, Jeremiah, so he couldn't have done it. Did he have help? Barbara finds clues before her death that Eli was unfaithful to her. Could one of those women done it for him but why? This was a good plot with Luke Macfarlane and Kirsten Vangsness as the leads supported by a good Canadian cast! Definitely recommend.....
Taken in Montana (2023)
Another Lifetime wilderness movie!
Lifetime is doing a series of movies featuring national parks this year! This one was rather good. Craig and Sarah are married and have a teen named Regan. They heading off to Big Sky Country and a vacation gone wrong! When they get there, they settle into a fancy timber lodge and just happen to run into a guy Craig knows from college and who lives in Montana named Jackson Green. Sarah thinks this is more than a coincidence and that Craig planned all of this after they both slip away to catch up on "old-times." Regan really did not want to come along and turns in early. Later that night, Craig gets up and tells Sarah he has to do a favor for Jackson but she tells him he's not going without her. They pull up with an envelope and a burly mountain man ends up slugging Craig after reading a note from Jackson and tying them both up. Meanwhile, Regan is back at the lodge getting worried..... Will she find them and who can she trust? Good acting and an interesting plot with beautiful Montana scenery make this a good watch. DEFINITELY recommended!!!
Kidnapping in the Grand Canyon (2023)
Good and entertaining movie!
Brooke and Chandra are best friends. Brooke is a pediatrician and Chandra, a photographer. For their 20th friendship anniversary, they decide to go on an hiking adventure through the Grand Canyon. Shortly after they get there, Brooke bumps into a charming guy who is also an experienced guide named Nate. He offers to be their personal guide off-the-beaten trail. Brooke is reluctant to go but Chandra convinces her. He drugs them, ties them up, and brings them to a cave where they meet a woman named Tara who was also captured by Nate. Tara is wounded and can barely walk. That is the reason that Nate kidnapped Brooke so that she can medically treat Tara who has an infected leg. Brooke tells Nate that Tara is losing blood and needs a hospital. Nate refuses but why??? This was a good movie and the scenery of the Grand Canyon are worth the watch. DEFINITELY recommended!!!
Rear View Mirror (2023)
Island scenery was better than the movie!
Jessica and her son, Noah, flee from abusive husband, Peter Howard, who is a tech millionaire. They end up moving to an island where her sister, Rachel, lives in California and starting over fresh. Unfortunately, Peter is never going to let her go and vows to find her and their son wherever they run to! As they get situated, some new people on the island enter their lives. Jessica is a teacher and is constantly on her guard when she wakes up constantly in the middle of the night because she thinks Peter has finally found her. Is it just her imagination or is she right??? You will have to tune in for the answer! The acting was pretty good and there was a plot twist at the end. Worth a watch!!!
Catfish Murder (2023)
Good catfish whodunit!
Helen Parker is a single mom of two, Taylor and Gia. But Taylor is bullied at in high school because he's a nerd and gets texted by a girl named Emma who he asks to a party hosted by another student at his school named Sophia. He gets excited when she accepts and his mom and sister are, too. But then Emma ghosts him and he skips the party altogether. Later on, she apologizes and wants to meet him at the park and then Sophia ends up DEAD and Taylor is arrested for her murder!. Helen and Gia don't believe that he killed her and try to clear him by gathering clues and playing sleuths because the police and his DA aren't helping him and the real killer is still out there who framed Taylor. This is a well-written, involved storyline but the Canadian acting is on the weak side and those cast for the teen roles look like in their mid-twenties so the movie loses some of its credibility. Pretty good plot makes it an interesting watch!!!
