The Identical (2014)

Corny as it sounds, the message here is follow your dreams and listen to your heart
23 May 2015
First off, this film is chock-full of religion, but that's not what it's about. It could very easily have the same message with a different background rather than religion. Having said that, the main character is torn between the way his parents are guiding him and what his heart is telling him. It shows a man being alone without being lonely, chasing something he doesn't know even exists. There are many heartbreaking moments in this movie, so have out your box of tissues. The comic relief is a bit forced but still not overdone. There are even suspenseful parts that make you wonder what is going to happen and to me that takes good writing. Although there are some disappointments in the story line, it just goes to show that's what life is. Some parts are a but unbelievable, and some are even predictable, but all in all I'd say that this movie was worth the time spent watching it. P.S. It will make your wonder if someone has it in their head that elvis's twin brother never died like they say they did and that he's out there somewhere. Either that or they flat out felt like twisting with elvis's life story.

Chasing Ghosts (I) (2014)
10/10
Fantastic in every way
26 April 2015
Chasing Ghosts is a touching movie about a boy, Lucas, trying to figure out what death is all about because he had to deal with an incredible loss at such a young age. He does not seek out help from his parents because they too are hurting in their own way and have lost the capability to connect with him in a way he understands. Instead, he looks for answers at other funerals, and from a man, Chris, who had a first hand encounter with death himself. There is also a love interest in the boy's life with the girl next door, Kimberly, who shares the same personality quirks. There was nothing at all about the movie I did not like. The stereotype of having an overweight redheaded kid as the bully was the only thing that could have been changed. The two children act a bit old for their age but life experience changes children in a profound way and the influence of what parents let their kids do makes each child different. The acting was amazing from everyone in the movie, and the layers of each person's individual story line were seamlessly brought together as a whole throughout the film. The element of loss is directly and indirectly addressed with cliché's but it was put forth in a way that seemed like it was the first time anyone had said it. Kimberly is insanely adorable and Lucas is mega talented. The parents were very believable and Chris's character was heart warming. The score was great. This is the first movie ever that I watched for the second time immediately.

Breathe In (2013)
4/10
If only the writing were as good as the soundtrack
25 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is the story of a suburban family that takes in a foreign exchange student from the UK and how their worlds got turned upside-down in that time. The fact is, their worlds were already crashing in around them, but no one was willing to notice anything beyond the board game playing, family picture taking facade they put on. The teenage daughter had already had sex with a guy she had a crush on but wouldn't commit to her because he was too busy blabbing their business to everyone. The father was living a mundane life teaching instead of playing music. The mother seemed oblivious to any of the feelings the other two are having. The exchange student arrives, catches the eye of the daughter's crush, as well as her own father's. As the plot unfolds, I was able to predict all of the major happenings that occurred. The daughter's self- destructive, self- absorbed, alcohol induced over emotion led her to a serious car crash when she ends up losing it. The crush tries to hook up with the exchange student, and when she refuses, he smears her name across the school. And the wife smashes her cookie jar collection when she finally realizes what's going on under her nose between her husband and this 18 year old girl. I found it quite contradicting that the husband finally gets the chair he wanted and the job he has been dreaming of, and is willing to throw it all away the next day by running away with a teenager he had essentially just met. It's hard to see him in a good light when he is willing to do such a thing to his family. I kept desperately hoping that the connection between the leads was more of a father daughter connection, because she had lost her dad and uncle, and his own daughter wasn't into music. My hopes were dashed when they became physical and i found it creepy and unnecessary. they could have gone a totally different way with this and made the film more touching and inspiring. Instead, it bread negativity with no solution. Having said all of that, the scenery was absolutely beautiful, and the score was magnificent. The acting was also superb. Each actor played their character to a T and it was very believable. However, wish I hadn't wasted my time with this one.

Holy Smoke (1999)
3/10
confusing perplexing and disappointing
24 April 2015
holy smoke is about a woman that gets sucked into a hindu cult and her family hires a man to break her of it. it's set in Australia. the cinematography is great and the acting is believable, but the script is not. as the story progresses, there are so many curve balls that it becomes bizarre. it became no longer enjoyable because i realized that nothing i hoped would happen actually did happen. besides the actual story line, there were many details that didn't make any sense. i must say that i watched this movie with no premise except that i like kate winslet a lot. unfortunately, i wish she hadn't taken this role because now i'll have a hard time watching her in anything else.

making it to the ending was torture
24 April 2015
the trouble with romance surrounds the situations that arise in 4 different relationships over the course of one night in the same hotel. each one is completely different, yet they each make a different point about love. about whether or not love is worth it in the end, despite all that has happened between them. the movie explores deep issues and makes some good points, but that's where it ends. God awful writing!!! the script sounds like it was written by a 16 year old, and each one of the lines was executed in the poorest manner possible. horrible acting!!! i may have enjoyed it better if the stories weren't back to back and they took scene breaks. the soundtrack was most unmemorable, if there even is one. the scenery was CHEAP. don't watch this movie unless you are trying to punish yourself!
