Mid-Century Modern (2025)
A Pleasant Surprise
The previews and trailers made me worried it would be too cheesy, but I've been pleasantly surprised. I've been bored by many of the more recent sitcoms (it's hard to love again after 'Parks and Recreation' was so perfect and so many shows feel stale or overly forced.) Mid-Century Modern feels like watching 'The Golden Girls,' 'The Nanny,' or 'Just Shoot Me' again for the first time - stupid in the best way, chock-full of hilarious little quips, and has heart without being smug about it. If you're a lover of classic sitcoms or a fan of Nathan Lane's character in 'The Birdcage,' you might consider giving this one a go, it's a lot of fun and they have some fantastic guest stars.
American Auto (2021)
Has potential
American Auto has good bones - a woman becoming CEO of a company in an industry that she is unfamiliar with and has little to no interest in, a man-child trust funder that is only kept around because of his lineage, and a crew of loveable misfits without the ability to self-reflect.
The issue, however, lies with the writing. There are absolutely fantastic jokes that hit hard, (S1Ep2's "I want to donate his skin" bit had me both horrified and rollicking) but they are the exception and not the rule. Some of the comedic timing is off so lines intended as jokes don't land, and the conflict that needs to be resolved is a plot hole/poorly written or not well explained.
Why could they not just introduce the self-driving car and work out the kinks afterwards? There's no way that the Bjork Blossom Franken-car would be viable. The show has potential, they just need to reign it in a little.
Grand Crew (2021)
Grand Crew is a fun watch
Grand Crew is a fun watch. The comedy hits well and watching the dynamics between the characters feels genuine.
I'm excited to see if Noah's Rom-Com daydream actually plays out, and I love the tension between Anthony and Sherm. Nicky is hilarious AND ridiculous, and it's impossible to not love her. What a treat!
Ghosts (2021)
Fun take and interesting premise
I love scifi, the supernatural, and horror. However, those genres often seem to take themselves too seriously and you tend to get burned out on them quickly. Add in a little comedy, and for me, that's where the magic happens.
I've been thoroughly enjoying watching this show every week and seeing the bonds between the characters change and grow. It's a fun show that keeps me coming back. Here's hoping for another season!
Coming 2 America (2021)
Fun if not predictable-
Growing up, I would borrow 'Coming to America' on VHS from my local library almost religiously. I LOVED the movie and I loved romantic comedies and Eddie Murphy, and I was for some reason obsessed with Louie Anderson.
I was less than enthusiastic when I heard that they were making a sequel to the movie. I had been burned too many times before! But, on a whim, I decided to watch it anyway. I loved this one as well! Seeing all of these actors come back together, watching them bring these characters back to life after all these years, I couldn't help but feel all of the fun they had radiate through the screen.
While there are some (fantastic) new additions to the cast, almost TOO many cameos from stars I'm assuming loved the first one and just couldn't pass up being a part of the franchise, and a few jokes that are a little too cheesy or a little too cheeky, the same idea that love perseveres and the world continues to evolve makes this feel like you're getting those same warm fuzzies you'd feel from watching your old favorite rom-com over and over again.
