T2 Trainspotting (2017)
They shouldn't have bothered
I hated it. I LOVED Trainspotting and was so excited to see it. Many of my friends saw it before me and all warned me it wasn't good but I just thought that maybe they weren't proper fans and so maybe didn't get it. So I went full of expectations and convinced I would get what my friends couldn't. I was so disappointed I can't even put it properly into words. With each passing minute I hoped it was going to get better but it just didn't. The person I went with begged for us to leave about halfway through but I said no still naively thinking it might turn around. Well it didn't. It was a rubbish story, there was none of the first films dark humour and it just felt to me that they all knew this would be a money maker and so this was the film that was made. They say sequels are never as good and in this case was definitely the case,
Westside (2018)
Irritating
I soooo wanted to like this and when it started i thought "oooh this is definitely a bit of me". However about 10 minutes in a song came on with a music video of them all. Well the song was rubbish but it ended and I thought "ok they just want to show us what their direction is and now we know. However as the programme progresses it is constantly interrupted by a music video of one of them and it's just so flipping annoying! It keeps me from being able to get involved with what is going on with the cast and the storyline plus the music just isn't good either! Every time I'm enjoying a scene it's cut short and now halfway through episode 3 I'm giving up and I've persevered with some baaad reality tv in my time but this is just too poor even for me.
Don't waste your time folks!
London Irish (2013)
Made me laugh even when I was very sad
Am absolutely gutted that there is only one series of this. I watched it when I had a breakdown and was under section. Watching this each week really made me laugh and I told the other patients about it and once we all watched episode 2 in the television room it became something that we all watched together every week which was the only programme that we did as it was just that good and despite our varied tastes in tv this brought us altogether and despite our personal sad troubles we all laughed and enjoyed it. Really don't know why they only did the one and although I very much enjoy Derry Girls which is by the same people, I still live in hope that they might rekindle this maybe with a new cast who could take over the pub if the original cast wouldn't work. If you like Father Ted or Derry Girls then you will love this!
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Just love it
I think this film is just so clever. It covers so many emotions and can go from the tragic to the hilarious in such an authentic way that doesn't feel forced. When in the petrol station and Steve Carell is finally feeling good and enjoying the trio and then his ex walks in an it so quickly goes to sadness it just feels so real and you feel his humiliation and see the pain but then a minute later you're laughing again- just genius. I wish Alan Arkin had had a bigger part but the small role he had was hilarious and he deserved his awards. Abigail Breslin is so adorable and plays her part beautifully as does the whole cast actually. It's one of my fav films to watch especially if I'm feeling a bit blue. The finale at the pageant is absolutely brilliant and you don't see it coming at all. The cast look like they are having a blast and it really comes across. I don't understand some of the extremely harsh reviews and can only assume that those people didn't understand the humour and the beauty of tragedy and comedy entwined. Watch it and enjoy.
Country Strong (2010)
Confused cos it's great
I really am confused at the very harsh reviews that this film has received. I think it's a great film and showed a different side to Gwyneth who I think really took a risk considering the storyline. Garrett was AMAZING and I'm surprised that I've not seen him in anything since. Anyway this film really impressed me and the singing especially was fab. Give it a whirl and ignore the bad reviews because it's definitely worth watching.
The Happening (2008)
Well I didn't HATE it........
This film is not very good let's get that out of the way. The storyline is bad and the acting is worse so it never really stood much of a chance. If it weren't for the director this film would never have made it to the cinema. The whole storyline is that it's plants doing this. So why doesn't everyone stay indoors? About midway they say that it's big groups that set it off yet at the beginning we saw people alone killing themselves. Poor Marky Mark he's not a fab actor but paired up with Zooey Deschanel he seems even worse, maybe because in other films the better actors help him to be better? But Zooey just widens her admittedly very pretty eyes every time she needs to show a reaction to something and that's as far as her ability goes.
However even tho this film isn't great IF you can ignore all the bad points it's mildly entertaining so if it comes on and there's nothing on the other channels and your Netflix isn't working then sit back and watch just don't get your hopes up that it improves as it goes on because it doesn't
Fighting with My Family (2019)
Enjoyable but not great
I'm really not into wrestling but that's not why I didn't love the film. They just got sloppy in places. Like when they were doing the fitness exercise - the models and cheerleaders did a LOT better than Paige did which makes no sense considering she's been doing a lot of exercise with the wrestling back home and most models are known for being thin but NOT sporty however because the story needed it they did it that way but it's just sloppy writing. There are a few bits in the film like that but I didn't let them pull away the enjoyment I did feel when watching it. I'd heard of Florence Pugh before this film but not seen her in anything and after watching this I'd definitely be more interested in watching something if it has her name attached to it now. Vince Vaughn was back on form with this film! I've only seen him in rubbish films for quite a while but this performance really reminded me of what a good actor he is when given a good role in a good film. Nick Frost and Lena Headley were really good as the parents, I particularly enjoyed Lena and I didn't even recognise her from GoT's which says something about her performance! So yeah definitely give it a chance as a fun film with really good writing and a fab director in Stephen Merchant.
Knocked Up (2007)
Really funny & surprisingly sweet
I really really like this film. Every time it's on tv I just have to watch it and I enjoy it every time too. Seth Roger is predictably very funny and at times shows a really sweet side which was nicely done. Katherine Heigl I don't know what she's done apart from this film but I do like her in this and she does pregnant very well. She also plays the straight man to the other characters without losing the fun in her character. A favourite part of this film for me was the bromance between Paul Rudd and Seth. They seemed to bounce off of each other really naturally and you believe the friendship. Leslie Mann played the neurotic, highly strung wife fab! The scene where she takes on the bouncer at the club is brilliant and I've since found out that she ad-libbed a lot of this including the epic shouting of DOORMAN! The film is just really funny, flows really nicely and you will enjoy it whether you've had kids or not. Enjoy it guys!
Candy (2006)
Extremely realistic portrayal of addiction
This film for me is probably the most realistic portrayal of heroin addiction that I have seen. Yes Trainspotting is up there but this film beats it for me. Dan and Candy are a very in love couple and they are also addicted to heroin. The film follows them through their addiction starting with the good times when you are first addicted to each other as well as the drug and you still have some control and are enjoying it. Inevitably considering the theme of addiction things gradually get worse for them with Candy becoming a prostitute and Dan living off of his partner's money from "sleeping with men she hates". I'm not going to say any more about what happens except that Candy's deteriorating mental health also comes into play. Dan and Candy are played beautifully by Heath and Abbie. The writing is fantastic and I (as a recovering heroin addict) couldn't fault the flow of the deterioration with the relationships with family, friends and each other. Heath in particular was fantastic as Dan and really looked right with the greyish tinge to his skin and the not clean hair and dark eyes. Abbie looked too well to look like a true addict although I loved her acting especially towards the end. It's just a brilliant film that at times is a truly painful watch - it definitely took me back to painful memories - and I highly recommend it to anyone but especially fans of the late great Heath.
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
This film hurt my heart
What an incredible film. Watching Jake and Heath I almost forgot I was watching two Hollywood A lister heterosexuals and it was like watching a real love story but the people didn't know they were being filmed. Heath in particular was just so incredible and you could see the torment his character was going through with the pain flowing through his eyes. You soon forget you're watching a "gay love story" and it's just two people falling in love despite themselves. I don't think anyone could have acted it as wonderfully as Jake and Heath did. It was Heath who really made this film for me because his character actually didn't have that many lines yet he told the story of every scene through his face and body language and when it came to the sad end it was almost too painful to keep watching. It was just an amazing film with a beautiful but tragic love story and the ending left me proper sobbing with real ugly crying because I knew that a lot of gay relationships didn't get happy endings at this time and it just reminded me how far we have come and how unfair and cruel life was for people who's only crime was loving someone. Fantastic film!
Clueless (1995)
Just as good watching it 22 years later!
Wow I remember watching this for the first time and falling in love with it. I recently watched it again and it's still a brilliant film and feels just as fresh and relevant now. Alicia is fantastic as Cher and plays the naive but loveable character beautifully. Brittany as Tai is fab and Paul Rudd as Josh is just gorgeous! You'd think you'd hate some rich, Beverly Hills girl for obvious reasons but you end up just really feeling for her as you get to know her as the film goes on. It's not crude and doesn't rely on gross or obvious stuff to get the laughs as the writing is just lovely and witty enough to not need those cheap ploys so often seen in teen movies. It really does stand the test of time. Fab!
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Love it
This is one of my favourite teen movies. The acting by the main characters is good, the story is well done and cheery without being cheesy plus it's funny without being obvious. I love Heath in this and the chemistry between him and Julia is obvious. Just a great film and it totally stands the test of time. Love it!
The Witcher (2019)
Gutted I'll have a long wait for season 2
I've seen lots of people comparing this to GoT's and the main reason it reminds me of it is because I enjoyed it so much. 20 minutes in and I knew this was going to be a binge watch because I couldn't stop watching. Henry Cavill is brilliant as Geralt, Yennefer is very nice and a fantastic character as is Jaskier who also brings some much needed humour. Yes it's not perfect and it could be clearer when it's doing flashbacks but I'm definitely a fan. I now need to read the books just as I did with GoT's. If you like action, sex, fast pacing and fun then this is definitely for you!
Frozen II (2019)
Pretty disappointed
Well I haven't seen Frozen so I don't know if I would have enjoyed this film more if I had. However that meant I could enjoy this film based purely on its own merits without being swayed.
I really liked Kristoff and thought he was one of the highlights of the film. He had some really funny bits and was just very likeable. He and Sven his reindeer amused me. Sadly he wasn't in the film enough for my liking. The other highlight of the film was Olaf. Olaf is just a very funny and sweet character and thank god for him and for Kristoff because they brought the humour to this film and I had a couple of out loud giggles. There could have been so much more though and the jokes and fun are what I love about Disney films so for it to be so lacking was really disappointing.
The princesses were your usual Disney princesses but for me that's it.
There was a huge amount of singing and all of the songs were very similar and none had me really enjoying it or thinking "wow this is going to be big". When I think of the songs from other Disney films like The Little Mermaid or Jungle Book this one came nowhere near. All of the songs were big ballads and just very average.
My niece has told me that Frozen is amazing so when I visit her at Christmas I'll be watching it with her and then I'll know if seeing it would have change any of my thoughts on this film but apart from knowing the characters a bit better I cannot see how it would affect the rest of the issues I had with it.
