Hitler: The Lost Tapes of the Third Reich

  • Fascinating glimpses beyond the usual cliches

So much has been written about Hitler and the Nazis, it's sometimes hard to see beyond the caricatures. He was evil, the devil, inhuman, incomprehensible, mad, insane... yet so often the standard narrative struggles to create the context, explain the circumstances or explore the man and his motives.

This excellent series does just that. Through first hand accounts from those who actually knew him, and by showing translations of his speeches (so often presented without translations, instead just showing his mad rantings) we are given a glimpse into the bizarre, twisted world view of this strange, soulless, narcissistic man and the turbulent times that allowed him to thrive.

The parallels to today's turbulent times, and our own strange, soulless, narcissistic man are obvious and yet all the more frightening given how this series demonstrates how one seemingly small piece of craziness, unchecked and unhindered - encouraged even - when added to more and more small pieces of craziness can end up creating one giant-sized catastrophe.

  • Fascinating and depressing

Does a great job of cataloging the life story, highs and lows and evolution of a thoroughly detestable human being. Fascinating too, to see the characters who strayed into his orbit... now somewhat chastened, sometimes sad, even traumatized.

Almost a cartoonish character, this series does a great job exposing the dangerous, vindictive side to the man, and there are many examples of people dazzled by - as one character put it - the "Trump bug". Reading some of these reviews it is clear he still has the ability to con, to bamboozle, to bankrupt.

One of the most revealing anecdotes was over the helicopter crash that killed some of Trump's executives. The man couldn't resist making it about himself by exaggerating the likelihood of himself being on the same flight, when he knew he would never have traveled on a chartered helicopter. A soulless man, with few redeeming features.

  • Witness the denial in the reviews

The only thing more disturbing than the disgraceful behavior of the bigots and criminals who shamed our country on that day is the willful ignorance, denial and absurdity of those who still insist there's nothing to see here.

We are truly living in bizarre times when this amount of direct, firsthand evidence is STILL not enough for those who wish to believe in an alternative reality. Watching this footage, one can only marvel at the mental gymnastics and cognitive dissonance required to twist this into "fake news" or "it's Pelosis fault". In decades to come our descendants will be appalled. One can only hope they at least find some wry humor in the ridiculousness of self-proclaimed "patriots" violently attacking the US Capitol.
