Does this show have it's issues? Yea, it's a micro budget indie film made by some passionate people who are honing their craft, (and I am biased) but its no less true. I didn't say anything when it first came out, but the comparison to the Truman show has been bothering me. In both movies, the characters find out they're in a TV show. That's it - similarities end there. Truman was a real person in a social experiment, the Christmas Cancellation cast are characters who become self aware and will cease to exist if the show is cancelled (see logline). Big difference. It's ok to dislike indie films, but if you're going to write a review, try not to be lazy or disingenuous with it.
Remarkably well done, made me want to read the book. I was impressed to read in the credits that the lead actress was also the producer.
It's really hard to find a show these days that doesn't heap stress and anxiety onto empathetic viewers once they're half way through the first season. When you watch TV to escape the world, it sucks feeling bogged down by heavy drama, negativity or that stone-in-your-gut feeling you get from the shows escalation. I love that Galavant is able to deliver a story that progresses without feeling like an anchor tied around your neck that drags you down with it the more invested you get in the series. I love a good drama as much as the next person, but it helps to space those out with something else that brings levity and light hearted entertainment to your experience. Not to mention the music in this show is upbeat, witty, the lyrics are cleverly written and play off of both historical and modern concepts, and above all else are catchy and fun. I've already re-watched the first season as I wait for them to make a third.
