This would have been very edgy when released 1961, but these days, it would never be made with the same story.
I have so many questions. However, to answer them, I would probably have to transport myself back to the pre Vietnam war, pre hippy, pre Beatles era of modern history.
We are definitely in the realm of show don't tell in this gritty, grimy, kitchen sink drama shot in black and white.
Carroll Baker is great and shows great range and the cinematography is quite beautiful in some cases.
The plot and how it ends is simply baffling. Character choices are quite insane. The eye? The imprisonment? The decision to return? The decision to stay?
Worth a watch because I haven't seen anything like this before.

Ultimately the acting saves this otherwise poorly made tale of depression era sexual awakening in the southern states of the USA.
Duvall, Dern and Ladd are superb in the main roles. The sets and art direction are excellent.
The direction of the movie is a problem. The film lurches around from scene to scene with no easy transition anywhere in its runtime. The director, who later on went on to direct, 'Sex In The City' seems more suited to directing trash TV than a thoughtful piece like this.
Maybe the book is different but both the start and ending are unsatisfactory with us having little or no build up to Derns character arriving or departing.
Could have been so much better.

Finally got round to seeing this and so glad I did.
So many movies thesedays are navel gazing attempts to 'subvert our expectations'. This doesn't.
Costner is great, his interplay with William Hurt is brilliant. The story is wonderful. The side plot with Demi Moore is interesting enough and joins up with the main plot really well.
It's nice to watch real film stars with proper acting skills plying their trade in a movie where we don't know where it will end.
More of this please Hollywood. More of this unique, standalone stories that do not require sequels or prequels in order to justify it being greenlit.
