Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)
It could have been better
I'm a huge fan of Percy Jackson, after I watched the movie I even started with the book and it was really great. Now with this new Disney adaptation I'm disappointed first it look like they didn't have the budget for the production design when we know it's not possible but that sense of immersion we had with the movies in camp didn't really feel it. The action scenes are not that good and the first fight with that Minotor was complete trash come on...last I think the whole cast is wrong not because the don't act well but because they are just too young for the role I know the first book is with an early teen Percy Jackson around 12-13 years old but they are demigods so they're supposed to be stronger the cast of the movie was way better it just doesn't feel right with this cast cause how can they really fight when they're so short and weak which explain the Minotor scenes...for me it's a no go but I'm still gonna watch it cause I'm a fan but I feel like Apple TV or even HBO would have done a better job cause Disney is too childish and bright just imagine a Disney version of Harry Potter...
Saltburn (2023)
Not bad really
I don't know about this one to tell the truth I mean don't get me wrong the cast, cinematography, directing were great but the storyline up until a point felt a bit like what they did with You after the first season...there's that component that makes it so improbable that you kinda asking what was the point of the all story, I mean for Promising Young woman the story made since from beginning to end nothing to say but Saltburn didn't keep up till the end, I feel like the characters were too complex and sick to end up being so simple that's the only thing I'd have to say about it but otherwise the journey was cool to watch with great moment of discomfort which end up being really interesting performances!!
I'm looking forward to see what's next for Emerald but this one was kinda disappointing from what I was expecting to see in the trailer.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
It kills me to say it but it was really bad
I'm so sorry that one of my favorite director did that to himself I mean come on....i was curious about the movie for one reason seeing what was different from Star Wars and Star Trek instead I got some reboot version of Star Wars, I heard he wanted to pitch the idea so it could be part of a Star Wars adventure but the fact is there's nothing really new to add. We've seen all of it before and now in a really bad way, the fight scenes were really bad, screenplay and storyline are neither original or intriguing I mean the only good thing about the movie was knowing Snyder made it which might be the worst thing at the same time cause if it was from some new director it would have been fine but I guess no one would even watch it so bottom line this movie shouldn't exist really I can't even think of a second installment I really don't know how he would save it all since for me it's a bad Star Wars copy and it really hurt me I'm expressing this for the guy that gave me 300 and a 4h Justice League I mean come on how could he not see this coming like even reading that story to me I would have told him make it more original, more distinct if you want to create a world just create it make everything new or something.... I'm soooooo sorrrrrrrry.
The Crown (2016)
It's been quite a ride
I've been a fan of the crown since day one it's only now when it's all over that I realize I've never wrote anything about a show so dear to my heart!!
I remember when I first started, it was out of pure curiosity for the royal family and mostly because I dig into anything historical really but the way they sum up 50 years of history of a family, an institution so beautifully done I got to admit it became, over the years, something more than just curiosity.
One of the rare beauty of the show would be in the realization that it's not suppose to be that interesting since we already know everything that's gonna happen I mean there's nothing really different since it's semi-historical there's no real room for big artistic change but that's precisely where the beauty lies because of the way they put everything together from the cast, the production design, the accuracy of it all makes it interesting and almost like the best history class in "history" plus we've never really had one piece of art that has everything of the royal family for 50 years...we've had books, documentary, movies it's always a piece of the puzzle so to put it all together like they did was obviously gonna be a success story!!
And let's talk about the elephant in the room which is not only a perfect and rich choice of cast but it's how perfect it is each 2 seasons, we don't really have that out there maybe for some movies but never that way...and it's crazy how it's only possible for that specific story...at first I got to admit it was a bit strange but the actors are so good, maybe good is an understatement, that you immediately feel comfortable and less lost as they started to play along....
My favorite season of them all is the 4th season I'd say it's 3rd and 4th. 3rd would be because of Olivia Colman as Queen and Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles but it's definitely 4th with Emma Corrin as the perfect young Diana and Gillian Anderson as the wonderful iron fist lady Margaret I mean season 4 was something of another realm really and Gillian totally killed it as Prime minister, but for season 5 and 6 I thought I had seen it all but Elisabeth Debicki gave that graceful, elegant Diana I didn't even know was possible after Emma or even Diana herself. I mean the transition of the characters over the year with different actor I think is the most relevant element of the show...and of course our 3 Queens were flawless I can't really say which one was my favorite as they each represented so perfectly a different stage of that wonderful character but because maybe of me or let's say our generation is used to an older Elisabeth I'd say Imelda was my favorite but really they all did way more than a wonderful unforgettable job.
Most memorable characters best played over the 6 season by order of preference would be: Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher, Queen Elisabeth, Princess Margaret and Prince Charles, that's totally personal and subjective I think those were really well played and left a mark over the year but everyone was really great!
The script, the production and costume design of the show was something else. There not enough word to express how good of a job that whole journey was I can't think of a single flaw they could have it's really a love letter the royal family to our beloved and imperfect Queen, may she rest in piece!!
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Really unexpected from Netflix
One of the best film of the year for me!! I was entertained from beginning to end, wasn't even checking the time for a 2h movie. And I just couldn't believe Night Shyamalan had nothing to do with it since it was so similar to his style and they somehow beat him at his own game cause when you compare the storyline with Knock at the cabin quiet frankly Leave the world behind was way better you could actually understand what was going on. I mean this movie is an anxiety spreader it has a way to make you anxious with everything going on at the same time without it being a horror movie I was more scared of that movie than any horror movie seen this year. Not only the storyline was genius but also the screenplay the questions that it forced you to ask yourself in between conversations the characters would have, really psychological way of questioning how we're are lately. What's crazy about it it's a totally plausible outcome with the geopolitical situation we're experiencing right now around the world. The ending was so great I don't know if a sequel would be a good idea we all know what happened with Quiet place but why not????!
I hardly recommend it...
The Prince (2021)
Oh man so freaking funny
I mean yeah it's dark humor, it's suppose to be morbid and uncomfortable but it's still jokes saying out loud what we all been thinking...I laughed all the way through it the even did a mini musical so freaking funny ....it's only 12 episodes once you start you won't be able to stop I'm so disappointed HBO canceled it people are so sensitive about everything now pretty soon nothing will be funny cause we're gonna find everything offensive, abusive or whatever....we just need to chill and laugh a bit about stuff without being mean and hurtful which wasn't the case in my opinion for The prince...I mean we all know George is not a narcissistic entitled child well or maybe not but who cares...just have a good laugh at the Prince please!!!
Love, Death & Robots (2019)
Season 1 for me
First of all my rating of 8 is only for season 1 I fell like it losing quality over the seasons.
We all love "love death and robots" because it's a wonder of storytelling, a complete coherent story in 10, 15 minutes it's just impossible but they did it and my favorite story is of course Zima Blue I've never seen anything like it just genius imagine telling this story to someone being high 😂😂just crazy. So yeah my favorite season was the first and the last one season 3 is the worst lack and coherence and incomplete stories for the most part but it's still something to watch!
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
What was that
Waste of the multiverse just like Spider-Man no way home I mean there was some cool moves but the screenplay was lacking of substance and coherence just like everything marvel has done since End game of you think about it....they should have just merge the story of America with Everything everywhere all at once( since the Russo brother are producers in it) cause that movie was by far the best, along with Spider-Man into the spider verse, at handling the multiverse...so I don't see why they needed to introduce America with a movie call dr strange when it could have been her movie with dr strange in it...so far I'm still waiting for something great cause Eternals, Spider-Man, dr strange, Morbius, Shang chi and all the series I mean there's just something missing.
Morbius (2022)
Not worth a movie theater really
It was just so predictable, nothing new, original, it's like they've done just enough to not be the worst marvel movie but it was a waste of time really!!!
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
After Spider-Man into the spider verse what's the point?
The only thing good about the movie was the come back of Andrew and Tobey, the three of them made a great pair but as usual for most of marvel's production after End Game there was a big hole in the story, the screenplay was awful a total waste of the multiverse so predictable nothing really new the success of the movie is do to nostalgia and of course it's marvel so you always have to watch just in case it's a great one as End game....if you want to watch something substantial about the multiverse just watch Spider-Man into the verse world just perfection from every angle screenplay, sound track just perfect or you could also watch Everything Every all at once which is after watching it and posted a review about it that I remembered that I had to write something about those disappointment of the multiverse and let's not even talk about Dr Strange and the multiverse of really madness cause it was just so crazy bad this movie.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Nolan's level of storytelling just marvelous
Everything everywhere is just.....there's no word to describe it, it just felt like a Nolan as great of a ride and as complex to understand but you can't take your eyes off the screen no matter how long...I couldn't believe it was a 2h movie cause it surely didn't feel like it.
It's by far the best screenplay of 2022, the best in developing the multiverse since Spider-Man into the spider verse and yes I've seen Spider-Man no way home and Dr Strange in the multiverse of madness both of them weren't even close to be as good as those 2.
The cast in general was just perfect, you could see all the shades of Michelle over the years she was just perfect for the role, best I've ever seen her.
This movie deserves everything everywhere all at once 😉....should be at least nominated and win for best screenplay at every award show next year, literally the only movie of 2022 I was proud to watch on the big screen...it's been a long time since I've worked out of a theater feeling I've seen something great something that I'm gonna think about all night until I fall asleep.
The Batman (2022)
Great work but still
I feel like this Batman was specifically for long time Batman's fan cause you literally cannot like the movie if you don't know anything about Batman so I really appreciate the effort it's like an intimate conversation with people that actually know what you're talking about but what about introducing new people to The Batman franchise? Specially if you're planning on doing a second one...anyway it's Batman so for a Batman fan the movie will always be interesting, intriguing and all but seriously it was too long coming from a guy that consider the Snyder cut too short so you know what I mean...production design, costume design, score and directing were great as usual and let's not talk about the cast...Rob is just great in both Batman and Bruce Wayne even though Ben was a better Bruce but still Rob is a better Batman...so everything was great about the movie what happened then? Well simple as usual they always focus on the work the directing and all but never really know the storyline and screenplay are at last the movie.... I mean what happened with the fighting scenes that was horrible...have you seen fight choreography from Titans the series?? It's just great but in The Batman I was seriously disappointed I was expecting some more insane, unstable Batman at least that was what we were promised...not killing people you know that's not him or why not we can have a lost Batman that will find himself through the movie like we've seen before... but at least more agressive and more fighting there was barely any fight it's all riddles riddles talking looking figuring out no fight...and screenplay was so poor(except for I'm vengeance of course loll or mister vengeance here or some cool quotes) and kinda childish making Rob look bad when it's not his fault seriously "you're not my father"!!!??? And don't get me wrong I loved the movie I've watched it like 6 times already twice in theater but man I was hoping to get obsessed with it like the Nolan's but here we're....the movie was all about symbolism like "you know what I'm talking about" but come onnn...we barely even seen Bruce Wayne and everyone knows one thing that people like about Batman is seeing Bruce act like the freaking billionaire he's which is one of his superpower like Ben said so what happened to that...as I said I liked everything about the movie there was an undeniable style even the cinematography was so great that kissing scene mannn it was great but the all story was a bit pointless and the end tasteless was that even ending a story??? They could have worked on the storyline better that's all I'm saying....
Black Widow (2021)
One of the worst marvel
I thought Captain Marvel would be the last worst marvel would do but they prove me wrong with that last Black Widow.
Nothing like we expected, the kinda of action we know black widow for is absent, a really bad character development they literally wasted every single one of the new characters in that movie....
The screenplay and Storyline are obviously the worst, so simple, basic nothing really entertaining same old stuff we see every single time. First Marvel movie I was impatient for it to end. I just don't get how Disney is making around 60M with Disney+ and 150M in theater with that disappointment of a movie.
I would recommend only for educational purpose just to know what happened but it wont affect in any way your understanding of Marvel Storyline since the movie is after Civil war events and black widow died in End game so if you don't want to watch it it's really fine I deeply regret those 2h of my life ..... I mean since End game I don't get what Marvel is trying to do with WandaVision, Captain America and the winter soldier or Loki I really don't get it except making money cause the effort put on those stories are really poor it's nothing like everything before End game(except captain marvel that was hard to watch) I really hope they'll stop thinking about money they already have and focus on what kind of story they're giving out there.
Oxygène (2021)
Unexpectedly surprising
Oxygen is the kind of movie you start and will find something exhausting maybe but if you dig into sci-fi just keep going you won't regret your time. The taste will gradually unfold and will ultimately leave you with a wonderful aftertaste of reflection, wondering and fullness.
I think it's one of the most beautiful screenplay of 2021 and it fits completely in our post pandemic recuperation. Plus it felt nothing like the classical French movie if you watch it in English you might even think it's an American movie so congratulations are in order for the French cause their last, Sentinelle, was really exhausting. Plus Oxygen gives us an exquisite glimpse in Turing questioning about man and computer, yeah you have to watch it to know what I'm talking about and maybe Imitation Game too.
It's the absolute genius of storytelling with a great development and evolution of situation where you're automatically put in character, with the sensation of living the exact situation and will inevitably try to solve the puzzle with the main character just to find out you'd be totally lost if it was really you ahah. Not to mention the production design was really basic....
I'd totally recommend this movie for family time, date or to spend some time alone..
Soul (2020)
Too good to Ben true
I rarely give 9 as rating but Soul totally deserved it and deserved all the Oscars they get. It was insanely original not only reaching younger audience but also older and more experienced audience that's the power of cinema being able to reach every generation by the originality of the story and not just some technical good story only for new generation beginners.
I really enjoyed Soul it was funny, coherent, unpredictable, really emotional just a love letter to life and passion this is the kind of movie that inspire people in real life that's a really rare quality those days. Totally worth your time you're not gonna get bored even for a minute and will be afraid that the movie will end while you're watching...great job Disney...
Nomadland (2020)
Done with grace
It's literally a love letter to America, I loved that movie so much. Chloé Zhao really did a good job capturing "nature's emotion" you literally could feel the connection through her eyes and having real life nomads acting they own self was just genius plus having Frances McDormand acting her through this masterpiece was just a wonder to watch. It open our eyes in a whole new world we maybe didn't know existed and makes us think about our work system how we're being used from the day we can work till the day we can't without even be able to earn a proper retirement.
One of the thing I liked most about this movie was the going with the flow lifestyle, paying attention to all little details just to find some hidden beauty and all the relationship you get to experience was just wonderful it reminds me of Into the wild which is a movie I really liked too...see you down the road!!!
Tenet (2020)
Pure Nolan
This is what I like about Nolan he's not like anyone else in any way possible he's always in the complexity he's my inspiration to become maybe half good as he's one day...and it seems it's a family thing cause his brother did a pretty similar job with Westworld
Back to Tenet, after Inception we all knew it was really a challenge doing better since Nolan always do better go deeper as the years past with each movies but he did it he came with a completely original concept even know there's some similarities with Mr Nobody but the style and execution had nothing to do. Tenet is just mind blowing, intriguing, a-can't-miss from Nolan I think it's the most beautiful concept to this time he ever done even know I love Inception more because of the cast, production design and costume design and maybe because it was bit easier to get than Tenet ahah but Tenet's concept is definitely more complex and beautiful. I'm not gonna lie I came to a point in the movie where I gave up trying to understand and I was just watching till the end so I can't wait a few days to watch it again I completely get everything only in my third watch this is just typical Nolan he's the only one you have to watch his movies at least twice to get it and you'll obviously forget this understanding so after 5 years you'll have to watch it again if you want to understand so that's the case with Tenet.
The only thing I didn't like in Tenet would be production design and set decoration but after that it's just a wonder to watch.
I would totally recommend it if you dig into those kind of story and while we're at it try The time traveler's wife, Mr Nobody, Predestination all great ones.
The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
Refreshing
I really enjoyed The Mitchells it's one of my favorite of 2021 followed by Luca (those 2 for sure will compete for best animated movie next year at the Oscars if nothing better comes along of course) but I enjoyed The Mitchells more, even know it's not a new concept but it's more connected to our reality for me. That sense of family they put in it is really heartwarming and makes you look at yourself and do better to connect with your family and pass over this inter-generational gate by realizing they sacrificed everything to exactly give you better opportunities than they had growing up without even a second thought(I literally have goosebumps writing those words) so they helped in the creation of that distance without even knowing it and will suffer from our unconsciousness that they did their best and still doing the best for us in our only best interest not even theirs so it's a beautiful love later to family, a warning to how much we let AI take control of our life and all of that put in a really funny way kinda not taking anything serious vibe all along. Really worth your time great storyline and screenplay!! Not only recommended for experienced spectators( that was the all point if the original storyline I think) but also great for an inexperienced audience....
Love, Victor (2020)
Heartwarming, sweet love coming of age story
At first when I heard they were gonna make a movie out of Love Simon I was skeptical but I just gave it a chance and it wasn't a disappointment at all.
The fact that the episode aren't long and heavy is really good for those kind of story only 30 minutes of story in 10 episodes is just genius just enough to not be exhausting and to make you want more.
Although there's nothing new pro original in the storyline but you just want to watch it and see how the characters are gonna develop. You get attached so easily because of their genuine performance not trying to do too much just being normal confused teenagers we've all been in some point. Plus you can count on a wonderful soundtrack covering all the predictable but enjoyable plot that was just for season 1
Now season 2 was less predictable, you actually were in the middle of it all and I think season 2 is the turning point for Love Victor, you get to see the characters in New and more excitant adventure more complexity comes along with a hand on different matter in our time now that needs more awareness like miscarriage, mental health, parenting and more and more,
it was really a wonder to watch much more enjoyable than season 1 and now they left you with more hunger to watch season 3 cause it was obviously better cause I could go on with my life after season 1 but seeing season 2 I can't live 2 years without knowing were season 3 is going to go ahah
Once again it's a wonderful learning opportunity for different group of people cause we didn't have those kind of story growing up as a child with gay kid as main character and heterosexual as secondary characters it's completely new and gives a lot of hope for the future of society and the development of the LGBTQ+ community through it....maybe finally one day being whatever you want to be won't be a wonder or worry for anyone...
Genera+ion (2021)
Funny nonsense
Even know I'm still waiting the next maybe last episode to be out I've enjoyed the time I've had with the show.
It's really refreshing if you were a teenager or still one you can easily relate to Generation it reminds you of all the confusion, struggle and pseudo end of the world situation that later will turn out to be nothing...it makes no sense at all but that's why I find it funny cause crazy things happen in real life too, it might be too sex flavored cause you have almost every character with some kind of different sexual orientation or relationship than the usual but it's exactly the reason it's beautiful cause we're in this period of time where people need those kind of story to help them see this is the reality we're living in kids are question everything, everything is changing so for people who are trying to deal with LGBTQ+ members of their family or even question their own beliefs system it's a great opportunity to learn and it's a great tool to teach tolerance for difference. I didn't had those kind of story growing up I've always had those boring type of teenagers with one maybe LGBTQ+ representation but now I'm really happy that the new generation get to be raised with those tools that will definitely help them figured out what they want to be in the future.
Those stories can change people struggling to understand sexual orientation spectrum in a way that seeing those character fighting their way out defying society and family pressure to just be who they are and tell themselves if those characters can do that maybe I can too....let's hope that's one of the impacts...
Fatherhood (2021)
Can help past the time
Here is the thing in cinema you cannot have always great movies to watch all the time from The fault in our stars to Avengers end game you just can't its not easy so to pass time and wait until those good stuff comes along Fatherhood is totally a good choice I mean Kevin Hart is a funny guy it's always great watching him even know there wasn't so much to laugh about in this movie but he was great.
The storyline even not original at all it's the same old emotional movie we've had since forever but I have to think of the new generation people with less experience could actually find it original and touching but for people with a long time in story telling that movie brings nothing new to the table.
Still a good choice to spend some time with family and inexperienced spectators like a date and stuff you know just to break the ice be there help in the process or maybe educational propices but nothing really to expect from.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Not bad just not bad
It was great to see some good CGI Alien with no holding back or some kind of trick to hide low budget flaw but Amazon and Paramount did a great job. Now the plot is not a very original one either on time travel concept or Alien but it keeps you kinda intrigued till the end if you can bear storyline incoherence over the road. It could've been much more better with a little bit of common sense but hey that's where we're at so it's just a not bad for me not a complete waste of time just not bad.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Great kinda new concept
Raya was fun to watch I would totally recommend to watch with the family. For the new generation being raised by Disney's classical this is the perfect story great storyline, screenplay you can really be satisfied with the plot from the beginning to the end. Not to mention the pseudo LGBTQ+ support implied between the 2 characters but i think kids would most likely to get the feminist message being served on a silver platter extracting themselves in that classical stereotype that woman need to be saved and ruled by man which is a great example of independence for young girl growing up.
But I'm afraid it could be unoriginal for young adults( like me 23) or even more for the older generation but once again we're not the target audience but the story started out to be too predictable and ended up being more predictable, even know we can see some orignal ideas but I'm afraid it's a bit too technical( great animation) cause no one can argue it's a good story that exactly the problem it has everything a story needs to be good but that's just it, just good nothing to spark like Spider-Man into the verse world and others.
Enjoyable fun to watch with kids.
The Mitchells would totally take the Oscar for me next year...
Wish Dragon (2021)
Kinda enjoyable
You would think it's kinda boring Chinese version of Aladdin but it's actual a good other version of an Aladdin story let's say a modern Aladdin story was really better than Aladdin movie with Will Smith (I mean why would you do the movie of a classic that turns out ti Be the same story with no change at all if you going to do some kind of movie of a classic just do a reboot kinda like wish dragon) although simple and predictable but it was refreshing and enjoyable to watch. It's a great story for kids with no experience let's not forget those stories are more for the next generation than experienced adults that could find it boring and unoriginal. I would recommend to watch with the family.
Luca (2021)
Warming
Luca is a really refreshing story in those post pandemic time it's a beautiful love later to childhood (with all the imagination, illusions, dream and other), friendship, family and also Italia it makes you want to visit Italia now I know where I would definitely go when I visit Italy and what I should definitely do( A Vespa will definitely be the ultimate goal). I enjoyed that movie really easy to relate to if you've been a child or is still a child, I can't think of a single flaw in that movie just wonderful job....
