Slap Shot 2: Breaking the Ice (2002)
Not horrible, but definitely bad!
The first and now legendary Slap Shot movie was plain excellent! It still makes me laugh each and every time I watch it! So why make a sequel over 20 years later? Well, there really isn't any good excuse...
Stephen Baldwin does an OK job as the lead character. He's no Reggie Dunlop but then again, no one is but Paul Newman. The fact that the Hanson brothers return for this sequel does help, but not enough. Former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Dave Babych is also a cool addition to the Chiefs roster.
In the end this movie is watchable, but there was never any need for this. If someone ever decides to make a third Slap Shot movie then I don't know what I'll do...
Hercules in New York (1970)
So crap it's great!!
I didn't really know how to rate this movie. When it comes to the storyline I give it a 1, but when it comes to Arnie I give it a 10! I mean I thought Arnie was stupidly funny in Twins but this one definitely takes the prize!! I once heard that the makers of the movie had dubbed over Arnie's voice because his English was so utterly crap at the time, but I was pleasantly surprised when I bought the DVD because there was an option on whether you wanted Arnie's voice or the dubbed one. So if you haven't seen this one and you plan to see it on DVD, YOU MUST CHOOSE ARNIE'S VOICE! Or you will miss out on all the fun of the movie.
Oh, and try to spot Richard Herd who played Supreme Commander John in the sci-fi show "V", he is in there!
SST: Death Flight (1977)
Flight of the Maiden
The truth is that about 80% of the people who see (have seen) this movie won't like it. Why? Because it is not that original. But in saying that, I happen to belong to the 20% who really like it.
I first saw it back in the eighties when I was about 8 or 9 years old. Now almost 20 years on I saw it again, and it really brought back nostalgic memories from when I was a kid.
Some people say this movie has bad acting. I don't agree at all. While the story might not be the best ever, there is definitely nothing wrong with the acting. And the supersonic Maiden One plane looks absolutely stunning, even though it is 70's B-TV-movie material.
I really recommend it to fans of disaster movies. It is hard to get a hold of these days, but if you have a chance to see it, do so.
Mask (1985)
A touching tale
I saw the movie "Mask" for the first time when I was only about 10 years old, but already at that tender age the movie really moved me. A story like no other, the story of Rocky Dennis is one that everybody should see or read if you are a bigger fan of books than movies.
Now I once again saw the movie some 15 years later, and even though many years had passed I still remembered almost every detail about the movie. That in my book really explains how great this movie is. I am very careful when it comes to calling movies masterpieces, but this one indeed is.
I loved the movie when I was a kid, I love it now as an adult. So in other words it is a movie for all ages, and I truly believe that you don't have to be a fan of drama movies to enjoy this one. It has that something for everyone!
Band Camp (2005)
It's OK I guess...
When I put my copy of this movie into my DVD player, I didn't know what to expect. The characters that we all loved from the three previous movies were gone, except for the ones we didn't love, hence Jim's dad and the Sherminator! Was that ever the most stupid thing you had ever seen? Well I suppose you can find it funny in some way...
The movie itself is kinda funny, but I'm afraid Matt Stifler isn't even close to what Steve was. And it isn't the acting that's the problem, the problem is that the people behind the movie wanted Matt to be too much like Steve, and that simply doesn't work! It is a watchable movie, although fans of the first three probably will be disappointed. But if you haven't seen the first three you might actually really like it! Therefor I think 7 is a good grade for this one.
War of the Worlds (2005)
Amazing War of the Worlds
After I saw the original War of the worlds movie from 1953 I was pretty impressed by the story. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that the original tripods from H.G.Wells' book had been replaced by swan-looking flying saucers. Fortunately Mr.Spielberg didn't make the same mistake.
The tripods in this new opus are very impressive on all accounts. The war cry and the tentacles and everything works very well. And I have seen many movies with Tom Cruise, but I think this is one of his strongest performances. The best part is that he is more worried about his family than trying to be a big shot and take everything into his own hands.
Overall a very impressive movie, I recommend it to all fans of War of the worlds and/or the BBC series The Tripods for that matter.
V (1983)
V for Victory!
Now this is real sci-fi! Kenneth Johnsons story is (in my opinion) one of the best ever written. While I rank The Tripods as my favourite sci-fi adventure, this will come as a good second.
I wasn't very old when I saw V for the first time, but I can honestly say it blew me away! And even now almost 20 years later I can still watch it and be in awe like I was way back then.
And now I am just waiting for the return of V, which finally seems to be becoming reality. Hopefully it will stick to the basics and not go "overboard" like so many re-makes have done over the years. But with Kenny at the helm I doubt that will be a problem, since I happen to know that the legacy of V means a lot to him.
The Tripods (1984)
One great show!
Well, where do I begin? The Tripods was, and still is, my favourite show of all time. It has everything: drama, action, mystique and sometimes even a bit of humor. I was under 10 years old when I saw it for the first time, and I'm now 26 and it still works for me. It is actually quite corny so if you are one of those who thinks that everything should be perfect then don't bother watching. The acting is sometimes a bit sluggish but that all adds to the charm of the show. One has to remember that the actors were all in the beginning of their acting careers so they were by no means professionals. But it still works, and that's the most important thing of it all. We thank the Tripods!!
