The Old Guard (2020)

Not a bad film.
8 August 2020
I usually despise these kinds of fighting action films because there's just no substance, but this film was pretty decent. Charlize as a badass immortal queen and her hot entourage - I was all for it. I hate the music though. Can't stand when these actions films have loud pop music, especially during the fight scenes.

Be prepared to get lost in Matthias Schoenaerts' eyes.

The fact that each episode is 8-9 minutes long is ideal for this lazy girl in lockdown.

Anna Kendrick was made for this role. The concept of this is weird and definitely something you'd expect someone to come up with when they're as high as Anna in this show, however, it's hilarious.

A dark horror anthology which is actually scary
8 July 2020
I enjoyed this horror series with it's short episodes which are very easy to watch. A promising start to this series, should there be another season. Each episode was dark, gory and scary. There were effective jump scares and each story was unique and entertaining. Sam Riami is a leader when it comes to gory horror and this series did not disappoint along with the great cast.

My favourite has to be the last episode. It was the darkest one from them all.

Annihilation (I) (2018)

Visually Stunning
13 April 2020
Alex Garland directed an adaption that was unadaptable and I loved it.

I'm not a huge sci-fi fan but this film was amazing. This film is the definition of cosmic horror with its Lovecraftian elements. It's like a dream.

I don't believe a film should appeal to audiences just because it's on mainstream screens but rather it should appeal to it's true fans of the books. This film is an interpretation of the book and not necessarily a summary like many adaptions.

Annihilation is about m self destruction which is a normal part of growth. The ways people self destruct, the hidden ways and the obvious ways.

The film has a hallucinogenic atmosphere which leads to a sense of dread towards the end. The soundtrack is amazing which makes everything feel dreamlike.

Billy & Billie (2015– )
7/10
A show about a taboo relationship which is lighthearted
25 March 2020
This show was very entertaining and enjoyable. A show about a taboo relationship which features two step siblings who fall in love with each other. After accidentally sleeping together after reconnecting at a reunion, Billy and Billie can't stop seeing each other. They have great chemistry on screen and the touch of sarcastic humour completes the show. I would have loved there to be another season, however the one season with each episode being only 20-30 minutes still gives the audience everything it requires. A great story, great performances and an ending which leaves you salivating for more.

The only time I've ever preferred a sequel rather than the first film
20 February 2020
The first 7 minutes of the film is the best and a really great opening for an Indian film. It starts off with a young boy speaking to the camera (breaking the fourth wall) and giving the audience an insight into the villain of the film. I enjoyed this as we don't experience this in the first film. I really enjoyed Sunny's character. Honestly he was the highlight of the film.

This portrayal of a villain is refreshing in Indian films and I would honestly prefer seeing more darker films from Bollywood with just as good storytelling. The script for the film was good, and the dialogue spoken by Sunny was just right. However it could have been better for Shivani's characters.

Overall decent film which doesn't shy away from the darker issues in India and is provocative with it's portrayal of a predator. Decent storyline as well.

Could have been better. Honestly preferred the second film. Strange I know.

Rather cringey with the women empowerment song at the end. If your making a dark film, with obvious bleak content, don't add loud obnoxious songs.

Could have been better
15 February 2020
I thought this film was supposed to be a remake of the Black Christmas franchise however it was completely different. A little disappointed but nonetheless. This is a 'remake' (used loosely) with modern issues. The premise is basically addressing the issue of on-campus rape culture and the nobility of fraternities. This film can be seen as feminist and yes I believe it is. However I liked the fact it was different and is seen as a feminist film. The film itself was not as strong and the ending could have been better. The script was also not as strong as I hoped.

I especially enjoyed one scene where they perform a song in the frat house about consent and assault. It's surprisingly catchy.

Ramy (2019– )

Most relatable hilarious Arab Muslim family drama
12 February 2020
Each member of this family is almost as relatable to some person you may know in your life. Ramy has that dry dark humour which makes it perfect. Not your usual comedy show. I enjoyed each family's perspective. The trials and tribulations of being a modern Muslim in today's society is accurate when there are many temptations. Ramy is a hilarious show and I recommend this to everyone Muslim or not. It's something you'll enjoy.

Decent

Warning: Spoilers
Highlight of this film: the daddy - baby girl story going on and the sexy scene with Joel McHale.

At first I was a bit confused as to what this film was really about. The trigger warnings just confused me more. It was only when I got to the ending that it made sense it's got a sense of the Salem witch trials as well as society getting worse because of technology and chaos erupting because of privacy breaching.

Trailer looked promising however film wasn't
6 February 2020
This film looked interesting and the directors first horror film Under the Shadows was a success I expected this to be nothing short. However this just fell flat. It started okay and was definitely creepy with the creepy sounds in the background. The ending seemed rushed. Could have been better

Disappointing
6 February 2020
I expected more from this film claiming to be a psychological thriller however it fell flat in the first 1/3 of the film. I skipped it to get to the end. The characters seemed flat as well and the dialogue was rather dry

This is definitely one I'll remember
18 November 2019
This is a great 'wedding' rom-com about singletons. Despite giving this 7/10 I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Legit. The script was excellent with witty lines and quirks that made you relate to the characters. Jack Quaid and Maya Erskine were excellent in their lead roles. Their relationship onscreen seemed genuine as if they were really good friends. The chemistry between them was amazing as it made me enjoy this film more. There wasn't at all one cringey moment between them.

This is definitely one I'll remember and go back to for those pick me up moments when I want to smile.
