This movie was so bad I spent most of it laughing out loud. The whole thing was so incredibly rushed that there was no suspense. And there was barely any acting; characters just delivered lines and hardly reacted at all to the deaths of loved ones or near death encounters. It felt like a school play. The directing errors and story inconsistencies are too numerous to name - but a few of the most noteworthy: one minute it's fast becoming dark, the next it's broad daylight. One minute a recently turned vamp has no blood, the next he's bursting with blood when staked. And that bit at the end about vampires at the drive in was creative, but kind of nonsensical. Overall it wasn't a horror flick as much as an unintended comedy. It's sad to see Alfre Woodward reduced to working on this mess. The original miniseries with David Soul and Lance Kerwin was the best. The remake with Rob Lowe was not as good, but passable. This one is just a bad joke.
This movie was difficult to sit all the way through, mainly because of the musical score which was painful and unpleasant from the first cord until the last. Yes, the music was supposed to highlight the macabre nature of the story and a few discordant strains would've done that effectively, but it was constant throughout the whole film. It was just too much! The story was interesting and I somewhat see why the lead won best actress because she carried the film. The rest of the cast was strong. The cinematography was impressive too. If the score hadn't been so intrusive and off putting, I'd have given it a 7.
