Tarot is one of the worst movies I've see in the 'foretold bad futures' type. Teeners are swept up in a wave of boredom while on vacation. They find an ancient deck of tarot cards, and one of the group claims some expertise in card reading and telling futures. I think everyone has seen this kind of movie before, some worse than others, but this one is way down in the worst of worst category. I am not sure why I gave it two stars, should probably be one. Maybe the second star counts for sheer energy, but it is just energy with little direction. I hope some of these actors get over being in a flop of a film. I think a couple of them might have some talent, and with the right script and a decent director.....who knows? Tarot may be one film they can look back on, and want to forget it.
Probably a not very plausible story of America's current fractured political atmosphere devolving into an outright violent civil war in which some states actually secede from the union and battles begin. Not very plausible, but the movie cleverly avoids delving deep into politics, and focuses instead on the consequences of taking political opposition to its farthest extreme. People no longer want to talk about their differences, but just want to impose their beliefs on others by force. If people disagree, start shooting. It's happened before in America, and in many other countries. The acting, especially Kirsten Dunst, is generally excellent. Battle scenes with CGI are very good, as this group of journalists en route to Washington DC try to make some sense out of a crazy environment. I doubt we will have another civil war here, but I believe we can get dangerously close. View this film as a cautionary tale.
Life has enough good actors, good cgi, and decent sci-fi horror plot to keep you engaged. That being said, it also has plot holes in abundance. They do not totally destroy the movie, however to enjoy watching you will need to just go along and ignore the lapses in logic. The acting ftom Jake Gyllanhall, Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sana a and others is pretty good for what the writers have given them. CGI is well done for being in a fairly limited movie set, and all actors do a good job of working with effects. The plot of a seemingly non-threatening, simple alien life form gradually becoming horrendous is a good concept. I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel, or perhaps a remake. Enjoy it for what it is.
