Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
Pure Popcorn Fun
It's a real pity that some people are so clever, so articulate, that everything they see must must be pulled apart and analyzed to the nth degree, ultimately destroying their own, (and others) enjoyment of something that is meant to be pure escapism, what sorry, sorry lives they must lead. I love the way they pick the crap out of a movie, saying, Oh they should have done this or that, or the acting was....., using words you need a dictionary to understand, Yes everybody thinks they're really clever.
Sky Captain would have to be one of the most fun works of art I have ever seen, so damned clever in it's execution. Yes the acting and overall feel was very typical of the old one reeler's we used to watch at the cinema's, when we were kids, but that is exactly what they were shooting for. I didn't like Jude Law much until I saw this, and Gwyneth Paltrow, well she is just eye candy. Angelina Jolie made the most of every frame she was in, making her part unforgettable, everyone looked like they were having fun.
It's not everybody's cup of tea, but then I didn't like Star Wars very much, proving that you can't please everybody, and I am a very big Sci-Fi fan, but this movie has passion written all over it. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), that it was the first of it's kind (to completely use green screens), going places and doing things that that hadn't been done before, so it was largely experimental.
Sky Captain is a triumph, a hell of a lot of fun, brimming with innovative and clever ideas, something to help forget the world for a couple of hours, good clean family viewing.
It has one of the all time best endings.
Do yourself a favor, don't analyze, just watch and enjoy.
Oh, and one more thing, to the clever critics, instead of criticizing other people's work, get out there and show everyone how it's done. We should be praising their genius, and encouraging them onwards.
A very fat 9 out of 10.
Called to Duty (2023)
Top Dumb
Within the first few minutes you know this is going to be something you wish you never started, a couple of Russian MIGs fly within 20 feet of the deck of an American Aircraft carrier, and all these ladies are standing around mass debating over what color nail polish goes with their F18's, "oh look Russian MIGs, to our F18's girls" and the music goes...na na na na na na na na Top Dumb. A few minutes of stock footage follows showing some aerial combat, that doesn't seem to match what is taking place, so much banter and arguing about tactics, "you go left, I'll go right, you dive and we'll sneak up behind them....but you'll kill us all..no, no trust me" a verbal high 5, "girl power (to the tune of ghostbusters) but alas... one gets hit by a Korean missile,Then a bunch of dialogue from a bunch of people in a war room that is so dumb an inaccurate, that you have to wonder how dumb the enemy is if these guys are a superpower. And then it just goes downhill from there.
None of the cast look like they have any military experience or for that matter acting experience, dialogue is best listened to with the sound off, and best watched while you're doing something else a long way from the TV.
A very good movie for the brain dead!
Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch (2023)
If your going to make a Butch Cassidy movie.........
I like a good western, but this wasn't one of them, there was varying levels of acting skills, the camera work looked to be done by trainees, the dialogue probably written by the same guys, the sets looked like a studio backlot, their clothes were too clean, the makeup and blood was unconvincing the wardrobe department had no idea about making a western look authentic, I mean if your going to make a western at least try to do your best. I would probably have given this another point if it didn't have Butch Cassidy in the title, and they had gone for an original story. There are many western books and stories out there that deserve to be made into movies, so why do another Butch Cassidy movie, it's been done to death, and this one rates very low against all the others.
Overall, if you looking for a good western to watch on a rainy Saturday Afternoon.....this ain't it!!
Office Invasion (2022)
What has happened to the film industry
The movies of recent seem to be plummeting to new depths, bad acting, stupid plots, you know how bad this is going to be in the first 2 minutes.....and then it gets worse. The only reason I can see that this movie was made, was for some kind of tax dodge. Not funny, not engaging just very poor film making from it seems, people who have no clue. Just awful.
Save your time or watch a test pattern instead, you will thank me for this warning.
Moonfall (2022)
Far fetched, impossible, totally unbelievable but well done
With everything going on in the world at the moment, we need movies like this, even if they don't make a whole lot of sense. Far fetched, impossible, totally unbelievable but well done.....everyone enjoyed it, from 15 to 65 yr old. So the dialogue was what you expect to keep the movie at the intended entertainment level, it did provide a few laugh out loud moments, the effects were pretty damn good. I had a little trouble with the story line towards the end, but hey, it didn't stop me watching it.
Overall.... I didn't go to sleep, I had a laugh, I was amazed at the effects, I was amazed at ingenuity of the the people that came up with the visuals and the so called science.
This part is serious.....What is wrong with people who just bag a movie and must spoil it for everyone else, this movie did exactly what it intended to do.....entertain. Not everything has to have murders, deep soul searching about one's sexuality, (oh yeah, totally entertained with that), revenge or dreary drama so bad I'm depressed for days after. The world is a mess, lighten up!
Alien: Battlefield Earth (2021)
I liked the general idea
I did like the general idea, but the dodgy special effects, bad acting and script was enough to kill it off. Seems they had a budget of about $500,000, which for this type of movie is a little inadequate. I don;t know that the Americans would actually take this route when confronted with an advanced Alien race, but then it is only a movie. Hmmmm... still needed more thought put into it, lets hope these guys do better next time. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but it's up there!!
The Tomorrow War (2021)
The Critics....what do they know!!
Just got through watching with my family, everyone enjoyed it, so much for critics who must pull every part of the movie apart, and then give you their over valued opinions. The actors did a good job, the effects were well done, big explosions, lots of destruction, some corny lines, the whole movie was typical of Hollywood, but I don't need to watch deep heavy drama, or movies made on a budget of lunch money. So given the crap that has been around lately, this was totally entertaining, so don't go over analyzing, just sit back and enjoy.
Blindsided (2021)
Like most of the bullets in this movie....it misses
First of all, this is not part of, or a sequel to those other Sicario movies, Secondly, the director must think his audience are a pack of idiots. I found the details in this movie distracting, like, when it's raining, it only rains on them, but in the background, it clearly shows no rain, or a wild storm, that only happens in the foreground. Ridiculous gun fights, where so many bullets are fired at close range, but find no target, and they seemed to have enough ammo with them to start a small war. Then there's the actors, none of who convinced me of anything other than obviously needing more acting classes. The more I think about it, the worse it gets.
If you like, or are expecting a good action movie, then avoid this drivel.
Coming 2 America (2021)
Eddie shouldn't be allowed to make any more movies
Well I thought, I know it is not going to be a blockbuster, but there's nothing else to watch, so I'll give it a go. Poor judgement on my part, it was absolutely awful, I got to the part where there was dancing to introduce the daughter of the leader of some other nation, that's when the wife got up and walked out....not bad, she lasted 45 minutes, and about 2 minutes after that I had to turn it off.
Everything about the movie seemed professional....except for the acting, and the atrocious script, and most of the choreography I know that it is supposed to be a comedy, but I didn't even get a smile, 47 minutes in, you would think I would find at least 1 joke or something to smile at, but I found it stereotypical, and bordering on offensive. There was absolutely nothing interesting or clever about this movie.
There are movies that you know are going to be bad, be it subject matter, lack of budget or even when you know the actors are crap, like Steven Seagal, Eric Roberts, Meagan Fox etc, but then there's this drivel. I did think at one point Eddie should get out of comedy, and perhaps do something like a John Wick movie, (the extra weight he's carrying, plus a couple of looks he threw around in some of the scenes brought me to that thought!!), but then, I would probably still avoid it because it's got Eddie in it.
Only watch it if your brain doesn't work!
Neighbors (1981)
Definitely a movie that you have to see more than once!
So, I've read a few of these reviews, and while I agree that it is a classic, I haven't read one that praises the work of Cathy Moriarty. To me she stole every scene that she was in, I don't think I have ever seen a more sexy, sultry woman in any movie, or perhaps it was her husky voice. I remember the first time I saw this movie at the drive in, I wondered what the hell I had just watched, was it a drama, a comedy, or was it just.......well, I didn't know, I just didn't get the humor first time around, but something about it stuck, and I just had to watch it again when it came out on Video, glad I did.
The switch in characters, (Belushi playing the straight guy) is genius, Dan Aykroyd' s character 'Vic' is very loud a brassy and annoyed me at first, but after subsequent viewings, I found hm pretty damned funny, but it was Ramona that sold this film. It's a low budget movie, with limited settings, a few running gags, and an ending which defies logic, but had to be!
Definitely a movie that you have to see more than once
Skylines (2020)
I seriously didn't expect much, and what I got was way less
The start was interesting enough, then quickly plummeted to mediocrity, then slowly slid downwards from there. While I enjoyed the first Skyline, and the second was OK, this was just awful, not the worst I've seen, but truly forgettable. The acting was very 'B' grade, some of the effects were pretty good, but the story and the crap they call science that they expect you to suspend belief for, was just not worth the effort. I seriously didn't expect much, and what I got was way less. Avoid, and save yourself the disappointment. 3 stars at best
The End of the F***ing World (2017)
If this is comedy, we are in serious trouble
The good points
1 Looks like it had a decent budget.
2 Acting seems okay
3 Locations.....meh.
4.......I am trying really hard to think of some sort of reason why I would continue to watch this insult.
The bad points
1 Vulgar, unnecessary insulting language.
2 Story line
3 ....actually there is nothing about this show that I would promote, It's just nasty ugly television.
For this to get an 8.1, it just tells me that there are a lot of disturbed and mentally ill people out there.
This sort of script writing leaves a lot to be desired.
SeaChange (1998)
Glad to see it's making a comeback
First up, I am Australian, and I am not a fan of Australian content, as I find that if you turn the sound off, you don't know if you're watching a comedy or a drama (movie or series), it all looks like a bad episode of Home and Away or Neighbors, same actors over and over again, most of it is trying too hard to be something it isn't......But, when they get get it right, it is usually a cracker. Take Rosehaven for instance, quirky, inoffensive and easy to watch. just like Seachange.
Now I didn't take to Seachange straight away, I watched a few episodes purely to see my old stomping ground. (the courthouse was where my band Valhalla used to practice, among other memories), but damn if this show didn't win me over, I started to like and care about the characters, much to my surprise. The drama's were believable and genuine, the comedy was light and funny, the whole show just got it....well, maybe not perfect, but pretty close
Highly recommended to any one who is sick of all the rubbish we're being force fed. So, while I wait for the next season of Rosehaven, I will enjoy the comeback of Seachange
The Last Gunslinger (2017)
Avoid this DUD.
I love a good western, but this isn't one of them, bad acting, bad special effects, badly put together script is just some of it's faults. The lead 'gunslinger' is by no means a leading man, his clothes were too clean, his dialogue and delivery was atrocious. Painful to watch scenes of confrontation in what (I suspect) was supposed to be 'cool', were just pitiful. Blood was the wrong color, the soundtrack was annoying and out of place, some of the sound effects were cheap and out of sync or just missing. A lot of things could have been fixed with some clever editing, while I don't think that would have made this a better film, it might have shown that the makers cared about the end product. Avoid this DUD
Young Sheldon (2017)
There is something deeper here that most people are missing
Some people are so hard to please, I think people expect another Big Bang, which I don't believe can be done, and certainly not in the same type of format. I love Annie Potts as Meemaw, (the Meemaw in the one episode of Big Bang was awful), the way she constantly messes with him, but you can tell she loves her Moonpie. Zoe Perry is a stroke of genius, I can see the older Missy in this young one, although I'm a little confused about his father and his brother.
I believe each episode is about how Sheldon dealt with his childhood, therefor the focus isn't just on Sheldon, but also on his family, and how they deal with having to deal with a genius, hence the episode about the brisket, that's called character development of the people that are important in Sheldon's life, without it they would be just cardboard cutouts, and unsatisfied actors. This show feels more like a slow burn, in that I think the makers have long term plans for it, I certainly hope so, because I believe it's getting better with each episode. I give it an 8. It deserves a good run.
Ghosted (2017)
Unfair critics are killing shows like this.
O.K. in all fairness, this is not going to win any awards, but all in all there are worse ways to spend a half hour. I have to say that I dislike 2 bob overthinking armchair critics, who write the whole series off according to the first episode. Give the show a break, after 8 episodes I think it's beginning to find it's feet. It's not trying to be the X Files or Men in Black (although somewhat similar in ideas), It's just a bit of hit and miss comedy, that provides a few laughs in a world that takes itself way too seriously. Here you have a show that takes (approx) 21 minutes (plus ads), from go to whoa to tell it's story, how deep can you get. Remember that The Big Bang Theory didn't take off first time around. I really hope this gets a second season, 'cause it looks like they're having fun with it. I give it a solid 7.5.
Aliens vs. Titanic (2017)
What has happened to Entertainment
Yeah,I'm not sure how to write a review on something that is so bad. Some movies are so bad that, under the right circumstances, could actually be entertaining or even funny, but not this stinker. This is 1 hour, 21 minutes and 32 seconds of the lamest 'SciFi or Comedy' I have ever seen. I really don't know what was worse, the script, the acting, the story, the sets, the cinematography, the 'special effects'!! The people that made this must have been smoking crack or sniffing paint fumes. Everything about this movie is a massive fail. Whatever budget that this had, could have (or should have), been donated to charity. The entertainment industry seems to be failing it's audience, in it's core reason for being....Entertainment, and this one sets a new low.
Jeez, I hate being this critical.
Gun Shy (2017)
Enjoyable, deserves a higher rating
I don't understand some of the negative reviews about this movie, and it's low rating is unfair. Antonio's choices of movie projects can be a bit hit and miss, but Gun Shy was a pretty funny movie. Don't expect it to be the best comedy, or anything great in cinema, that is not what this movie is about. It's an easy going hour and half of inoffensive fun. Gun Shy and it's cast and crew are not going to win any Oscars for this, but everything was done well enough to give the viewer a pleasant experience. It's not a deep thinker, and as such does not need to be over critiqued.
At least a 7/10
