A Very Royal Scandal (2024)
Laughable performances
OK, think we all know the story here so it's very interesting to get a bit of behind the scenes of it all.
What I really couldn't get on with is Ruth Wilson's take on Maitlis' vocal tone. At points I had to remind myself I wasn't watching The Windors (a brilliant Channel 4 comedy) it seemed that much like she was doing a parody.
Michael Sheen is his brilliant usual self and the rest of the cast were 'fine'.
This story will never get old and over time, I'm guessing, more information will come to light so no doubt more drama's will come.
If you want a masterclass in acting and actually becoming someone else, watch Gillian Anderson in Netflix's Scoop!
Fallout (2024)
From a non-gamer POV
I'm not a gamer and had never hears of Fallout until this series.
I have to say, I loved it. The visual effects are amazing, the acting is great, the soundtrack is simply fantastic. A great storyline with twists and turns. The Ghoul is brilliantly acted and portrayed.
I've just heard series 2 is confirmed which a fab news.
I very, very rarely binge a series - boredom kicks in - but I did this in two days and was left still wanting more.
There's the right balance of true grim darkness and dark humour without making a mockery of the series or diminishing the tone.
I'm not sure I'll be racing to be a gamer but I've certainly enjoyed this series.
Bodies (2023)
Oh, it's good
Really didn't know what to expect, avoided reviews until I finished it. Really enjoyed the timeline shifts and all the twists and turns.
Don't get the 1* reviews, it's far from that - even with some dodgy acting from one or two cast members, namely to 2053 policewoman!
Stephen Graham is his usual excellent self and gives perfect levels of creepy and surreal.
The whole show was really well written and directed. It was shot perfectly.
Some shocking scene's but all played well within the storyline.
I'd highly recommend watching at least 3 episodes - for me they seemed to fly by and I didn't want them to end!
American Horror Story: The Future Perfect (2021)
A terrible end....
A terrible end to a very poor season.
I didn't like the split season. Last episode of Red Ride felt so rushed. We could've had a whole season out of this story line.
Second half of the season was just plain awful. Poor script executed by even poorer acting. Those college students - wow. I very almost skipped through the anything not black & white.
Sadly, I think AHS has lost it's spark.
Invasion (2021)
Man alive, this is sloooooow
I can't be the only one who detests all this slow burners that are coming out these days?
This plods along at a heavy, slow rate. I expect they could've cut down to 3 really good episodes had this had a decent pace!
Seen 3 episodes, won't be hanging on tenterhooks for any more.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
I don't get it.....
I really don't get the hype. Done 5 episodes now and find it all rather boring.
Maybe I was expecting too much when someone told me it similar to Battle Royale....?
The Manor (2021)
Boring. Plain & simple.
Barbara Hershey is great but that's about it. The whole film feels like it is just about to go somewhere but never actually does.
Everybody's Talking About Jamie (2021)
Oh - I ugly cried!
I loved this. I've heard so much about the stage show, I've watched the documentary and had been looking forward so much to watching this film version. I was worried it was gonna be a let down but it is fab-u-lous. The feel good factor, the campness, the songs, the costumes! Mate, this has *all* the feels.
Please, don't listen to the critics. Just watch it and I guarantee you'll fall in love with it.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
All round terrible
Absolutely the worst of the Saw franchise / "Book of Saw" or whatever you wanna call it.
Really poor performances from everyone, expect maybe Samuel L Jackson.
It's just a rehash of all the Saw films with added bonus of wooden acting and terrible scripts.
Just, no. Nope. Not at all. Nah.
Before We Die (2021)
Bad acting, terrible script.
I've not seen the original Scandinavian version so can only judge on this series.
The main takeaway is the acting, everyone's acting, is shocking. Even from usually fine actors.
I found the storyline interesting but couldn't get over the dodgy, wooden acting and weird script.
I'm out.
Without Remorse (2021)
Yawn......
I've not read the book so really can't compare but this film was an utter waste of time. Even Michael B Jordan couldn't save it. Average special effects but terrible everything else. Script, acting, soundtrack. I should have guessed it was gonna be bad when Amazon put out a trailer that was more than 5 minutes long. Avoid.
It's a Sin (2021)
Sinfully good
Outstanding. That's the only way to describe It's a Sin. Each member of the cast excelled in their role. The directing & production values are amazing. The soundtrack made me smile. And then the tears came. Long, hard tears. I was born late 70s and grew up too young to know the ins and outs but old enough to grasp how scary AIDS was. It's a Sin is a wonderfully funny but ultimately sad story and has made me want to learn more about the crisis. Thank you to all involved 💜
Finding Alice (2021)
Just plain awful
I stuck with the first episode as some very good actors here whom I usually like. By episode 3 I had given up all hope. The script is dire. I mean, utterly & woefully dire. It fails in what ever it is attempting to be. Comedy? Drama? It lacked in all aspects.
Mortal Engines (2018)
Great visuals, bad everything else
Thought I'd give this a go as it popped up in Netflix. Great opening and thought I would really enjoy the rest but the script is bad and even usually competent actors fail here. Such a shame
His House (2020)
Best horror flick for years
I've been wanting a decent, intelligent horror so so long now. I hated the like of Hereditary & Midsommar. But this? This I loved. Full on tense drama, thriller, mystery, horror. Genre-bending & mond-bending brilliance. Both leads were perfect. The twists & turns kept me guessing. A harrowing story of descent in to delusion, despair and unimaginable grief.
Mystery Road (2018)
Loved it!
What an amazing Aussie drama. Dark, gritty, twisty. Beautifully shot with an equally impressive soundtrack. Every performance is perfectly understated, raw and gripping. Can't wait to start series 2!
The Devil All the Time (2020)
Surprised me in every way!
Well, I watched this with a friend who had wanted to see it. If it wasn't for her, this brilliant film may have passed me by.
Every single actor was well placed in their role and exceeded all my expectations. Extremely well acted, beautifully shot with a great soundtrack. So, so glad I watched it.
Away (2020)
Clichéd, slow, poor execution
I really wanted to like this but it fails on so many fronts. Script is very basic & clichéd. Acting is sub-par. Special effects are fine if a little rudimentary. I'm halfway through the series and don't know if I can be arsed to continue.
Such a great premise but done in such a cheesy, overly-emotional way it feels like a bad afternoon film.
I'm sure there's a whole raft of viewers dying for a decent sci-fi series that doesn't need every aspect explaining as if speaking with a 5 y/o or that isn't so pretentious it loses track of the storyline.
The Visit (2015)
Lucky I had coffee beforehand....
Well, I watched this after seeing so many positive reviews. All I can say is that I am glad I had a large, strong coffee beforehand. I am pretty confident I would have dozed off otherwise. I am not a fan of slow-burner films at all. This didn't ever get my pulse going. I've now totally given up on Shyamalan's films cos they are, for me, bloody boring!
Venom (2018)
Distinctly average
I'd never heard of Venom before watching this so went in pretty blind. Tom Hardy was very good in the role & special effects were good too. However, the storyline is highly predictable, the script was very basic and clunky.
If there's a sequel, I shan't be rushing to see it.
Harlots (2017)
Love. Love. Love it!
Sex. Drinking. Swearing. Romance. Comedy. Tear-inducing drama. I'm totally in love with this series. Chock full of throughly loveable characters and equally detestable characters.
The whole cast are outstanding from the household names like Samantha Morton, Lesley Manville Dorothy Atkinson & Liv Tyler to the lesser known but just as superb Hollie Dempsie, Eloise Smyth & Jessica Brown Findlay.
I've recommended this to many friends & family and every single one of them has thanked me for it.
I urge everyone to guve this a go. I guarantee you will be hooked after the first episode.
I'm holding out for series 4 to be commissioned by a major network soon!
Triangle (2009)
What. The. Actual ......?!
Read a couple of reviews here and saw the relatively high score and decided to give it a go. Really wish I hadn't. Boring, ludicrous, self-indulgent nonsense. Could've cut out most of the rubbish and turned it in to a half hour TV special on the horror channel and it would've been fine. Not a long, slow, boring, drawn-out 1 hour 40 mins!
It's a no from me! A big fat stinking no.
The Deceived (2020)
Poor writing & poor acting
Really wanted to like this as I love Derry Girls by the same writer. But this is typical channel 5 rubbish. Like a bad afternoon movie. Like an airport novel. Like, well, like utter rubbish. No atmosphere, no tension, no likeable characters. The lead actress in particular is very wooden and there is no chemistry with lead male actor whatsoever. Such a shame.
The Mist (2017)
Poor, poor, poor
From the terrible, terrible acting to the awful directing & dire special effects everything is bad with this. I love Stephen King's work but they are always hit & miss when developed in to film & television. This was a major miss. Given to the right people this could have been brilliant, alas it is not.
The Salisbury Poisonings (2020)
Could've been far better
This is a story known all round the world. I was so intrigued to see this as wanted to know bit more about it all. However, this felt slow & drawn out yet rushed in places too. It could've been an amazing 90 minute one off and I started losing interest after an hour of the 3 hours. Didn't hold my attention and raised more questions than it answered - namely how much of this is true. Glad I watched it but probably wouldn't recommend
