New Kids Turbo (2010)
Very great fun
Just went to see it and I have to admit, the movie exceeded expectations tremendously. Having seen the sketches in before (and liking them a lot) I was really concerned that transforming this to a feature length movie would not work. I stand corrected.
The story is quite thin, but that's not bad. The five main characters all loose their job on the same day and then decide not to pay for anything at all any more. With the rest of the country following their example the economy collapses. The government tries to put them in prison for it (but fails horribly) resulting in what the guys do best, putting up some sketch and making the whole audience laugh.
There's one very bad point in the movie. (This is where the spoiler comes). It's the part where Reinout Oerlemans "walks in", declaring that the budget for the movie is spent and the cast just have to tell you the story. They really should not have done that.
Apart from that, just sit back and enjoy the ride. Oh, and if you don't like the "New Kids" sketches on youtube, don't bother. You won't like the movie. If you're not familiar with those, find some especially the one with "the red one (die rooie)" and then decide. If you like them, go see it.
Sint (2010)
Great action packed movie
I went to see this yesterday with high expectations. After all, the movie was hyped a lot here. Fortunately most of my expectations were fulfilled.
The story: The story is straight forward and sometimes a bit predictable. The fun part is of course that Dick Maas has turned Sinterklaas from the child loving person he normally is, into a blood-lust zombie. So every 30 to 40 years, when the 5th of December is with full moon, blood thirsty Nickolas and his party of zombies, come to spoil the party. Only, this time, there's someone waiting to stop him.
The good: This is movie is all you can ask for in a horror comedy. The mix between scary moments and laughs is just right.
The bad: Well, some of the actors (especially the non-main characters) could use some acting lessons. Fortunately most of them don't last long enough to be bothered by it too much..... Also some of the explanations for the evil behaviour of Sinterklaas are very thin. Dick Maas should have come up with something better there.
The conclusion: All in all, it's good fun to watch. Some minor bits should be taken care of in the case of a sequel (can't wait), but those can easily be overlooked. That's why my final verdict is 8 out of ten.
Immortally Yours (2009)
There are much better ways to waste your time then watching this.
I'm a huge fan of vampire movies, ignoring other peoples bad reviews and knowing some people really liked it, I did decide to watch it. That was a mistake.
Where to start? Well I guess the most annoying bit is the way the vampires behave. When they're battling in the vampire "hunting ground", all they do is stay back and make some spastic movements. (Actually, most of the time that's all they do).
Then there's the sound the vampires make. What were they thinking??? It sounds more like a werewolf with a very bad cold then anything resembling even remotely what I believe should be a proper sound.
Next, the acting. Or should I say, lack of it? I've seen lots of High School plays with much more talent then in this movie. What's wrong with them? It can't be that hard to find people who can actually act at least a little? Was it all bad then? No, the story could have been something. On one hand you have the rich human criminals that want immortality and on the other hand the vampire that wants to become mortal. That results in some somewhat interesting plot twists, but unfortunately most of them are highly predictable.
So, since I'm in a good mood today I give 3 out of 10 stars for the effort.
Santa's Slay (2005)
Hilarious, just don't take it too seriously
I'm one of those persons who really hates the average Christmas movies. So now, there's finally one that I really liked.
You see, in general all X-Mas movies are about this joyous feeling, happy, happy, happy thoughts and so on. This one, takes the other side. Just watching the opening scene where Santa just kills off that highly irritating family just makes the movie worth while.
So, for the story. Well, like I mentioned in the title, don't take it too seriously. It's about Santa having lost a bet with an Angel a thousand years ago. In these years he had to be good and now they've ended. Finally he can take revenge.... A very bloody revenge. The story isn't going to bother you with deep thoughts or complex plot theories. It's pretty straight forward and predictable.
As for the acting. I've seen better and I've seen worse. They just make it work. Just watching the "Big Bad Santa" is fun by itself.
So, bottom line, If you hate Christmas, just like me, it's a must see. If you do like it, just watch it anyway and have a good laugh about it. Just remember, be careful what you wish for......
