Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995)
Not as good as the first but not as bad as people think
I loved the first Candyman. I basically call it the movie that made me love horror so I was looking forward to the sequel. As a rule I don't hate sequels, they are rarely as good as the original but I try to give them a chance. This one had promise and was a good showing for the most part. There were some parts I did not like. The first one, though mist if the movie you were never sure if Helen was crazy or if she was actually being haunted. This one there were too many scenes where people "saw" the Candyman or something he did. I did however find the idea of a family being cursed and haunted by him clever. I just wish it had been done better. Still not a horrible showing, just not as good as the first.
Candyman (1992)
This is the movie that made me love horror.
This is the movie that made me love horror. It is part horror story and part love story. It is a slasher and yet almost purely Psychological. You will wonder though if Helen is just crazy or if she really is being haunted by the sexiest monster who ever lived....and died. Three quarters of the movie is pure genius and I often debate about the last ten or so minutes. Do I like the end? Honestly no. But I get why it ended that way, I just didn't care for it but its not enough to ruin the movie for me. This is the movie that made me love horror. Oh to my knowledge there two more Candyman's out there. The 2nd one "Farewell to the Flesh" is OK, not as good as the original but not horrible. Number 3 "Day of the Dead" is a waste of time.
Red Dawn (2012)
If you can't see past the REMAKE label stay away
I enjoyed the original, I never considered it a classic but it was a fun movie so I was interested in how it would be remade. I get why some people hate it; there will always be the "DON'T REMAKE MY FAVORITE MOVIE!" people. There are a fair number of those. If you are one of those people you will outright hate this movie. If you are someone who saw the original and thought it was cool but like me, wouldn't mind seeing an updated version this isn't a bad one. I actually like some of it better then that original (The ending for one thing...which I always thought was a weakness of the original.) I much prefer how the remake ended and there are some action sequences that are to die for. Oh and the females in this have a larger role which is always good in my book. Look this isn't a perfect movie, it has its flaws but if you are in the mood for a good "Ra Ra America! Action movie there are worse ones to watch
Dexter (2006)
It was good all the way up to the last season
There is a bit of a discussion on when or if this show "jumped the shark". Some say it happened after season 4. Personally I disagree. I thought season 5 was great and had a much needed emotional tie-in to the events of season 4. I wasn't too happy with the sudden way the season ended but, for the most part, I was happy with the season. Season 6 was kind of bad, but it had an interesting ending that at least ties in with the series as a whole. Season 7 however was fascinating to watch. I really enjoyed the season and the season finale is among the best in the series except for the season 4 finale. I only wish the show didn't mangle season 8 which is the final season of the show. So here is my opinion: Although the show had its ups and downs, it did not "Jump the Shark" until the final season when it went off the rails for no reason other than trying to be clever for no reason. It had plenty of stories to tell an yet it told none of them...or the least interesting of them.. So there it is. Show good. Ending bad.
The Bad Seed (1956)
Good movie with one MAJOR Flaw
SPOILER ALERT I've been watching a lot of old movies lately and I stumbled across this one and I rather enjoyed it; well most of it anyway. This suffers from what most old movies of the like suffers from...the need for "a happy ending." I would have preferred it either end with Rhoda getting away with everything or her mother successfully murder/suiciding. However the movie instead went for the most contrived ending I could think of. Even though the ending was not what I would have hoped for the rest of the movie was top notch. Warning though...if black and white movies give you hives stay far away. However if you like old movies and don't mind them in black and white this is a good movie to see, I would recommend it, even with the silly ending.
Cold Case: Churchgoing People (2003)
This was the first good episode of a great series
This was the first episode of the series that I truly enjoyed. I view this episode as the mirror of what this show had the potential and sometimes actually did become. This was the first truly good episode of the series. What we have is a woman suffering from Alzheimers wandering around looking for her husband and is found by the police Lily soon finds out by her devoted son that her husband/his father was murdered and the case was never solved......Lily and co to the rescue. They soon discover why the case was quickly shut down. The victim was , a nice church going man found in the bad part of town surrounded by prostitutes and drugs is not something anyone wants dredged up but of course Lily dredges is up. The acting and the end result was all around good. I liked how it ended. Everything about this episode hit the right mark for me. Like I said this was first great episode of one of my favorite police dramas.
Orange Is the New Black (2013)
It's like the first few seasons of Weeds
It brings back memories of Weeds. You know in its glory days. The first few seasons before it went off the rails. That's what "Orange Is the New Black" is like. Equal parts funny and sad. A mix of true pathos and yet true honesty and beauty coming from the strangest places. Be warned however there is plenty of lesbian sex and if the "F" word makes your ears bleed it is probably a good idea to turn back now...This isn't OZ but this also isn't Disney. This is a true winner from Netflix and tells an interesting story not only from the main character's perspective but from the other inmates as well. It would have been boring to see things from just her point of view. Like Nancy Botwin on Weeds, sometime Piper Chapman is portrayed in not so good a light because she can be the villain in someone else's story.
Side Effects (2013)
A little too Twisty but still a good movie
This was a good movie with one major flaw, it was a little too twisty. It would have worked better if it had been just about the Inherent problems with the Phyciatric Industry (and it has become and industry) and how they prescribe a pill for every illness without telling the patient the side effects the drug might have. The first 2/3rds of the movie were great. It was only the last 1/3 that it became an entirely different movie. Maybe it had to but it became a less interesting one. Still a good showing. I am not going to bother giving away the plot because this is one of those movies where it is better to go into it knowing very little . It was a good move overall. I just didn't care for the ending.
American Horror Story (2011)
Went from guilty pleasure to out right pleasure
Season 1 Murder House was amazing. Season 2: Asylum was even better. This is a horror anthology for people who love all kinds of horror. Season 1: was set in a haunted house and told the story of the Harmons; a fractured family who moved across country thinking it was a fresh start only to find themselves living in the most haunted house in America and being haunted by the former residents both living and dead. Season 2 is set in a 1960's insane asylum and is focused around a wrongly committed reporter and a young man who may or may not be responsible for a string of murders. Both seasons tell separate stories so you know you won't be left hanging with incomplete story lines. Both seasons all the actors did well. In season 1 the standout performers were Evan Peters as Tate and of course Jessica Lange as Constance. In Season 2 Jessica Lange again was stand out as Sister Jude but the real stand outs were Lily Rabe as the demon possessed Sister Mary Eunice and Sarah Paulson as Lana Winters. I enjoyed season 2 more than season 1 but they were both fantastic and this show has become one of my favorites in years.
Baby Face (1933)
Forbidden Hollywood
Baby Face is a classic pre-code movie about a woman who sleeps her way to the top. The CD I received has it as a "Forbidden Hollywood Collection" and you can see why it is. This was probably clamped down hard by Hays Code Hollywood. Although tame by today's standards it must have raised a few eyebrows in 1933. The story itself is about a young woman who works at her father's speakeasy and is pimped out by him to keep it running smoothly. When the father dies in a fire she goes out on her own and makes a life and a living the only way she know how; on her looks and her charm. What I found interesting is that the movie made no bones about keeping Lily unlikable almost all the way through. She used men and then threw them away without thought or emotion. It was only the last guy that things changed and the moment of truth happened. There are two versions of this movie and my recommendation; if you only watch one, is watch the pre-release version; it tells a better story and the theatrical version tacks on a clumsy happy ending that doesn't really fit. Otherwise this is a classic 1930's movie that is not to be missed.
Triangle (2009)
Three hour tours never end well
Haven't we learned by now that those three hour tours, whether by land, sea or air always end in tragedy and horror? This one is a gripping tale of physiological and probably supernatural horror for a group of friends who go on that fateful boat ride and end up on a derelict ship and that is where the fun and horror begin. The main protagonist is the potential girlfriend for the boat captain who is mostly unfamiliar and therefore untrustworthy to the rest of the friends. I could explain the plot but that would give away too much and honestly it is better going into the movie blind. The movie itself has aspects of Groundhogs Day and the Twighlight Zone with scene resetting and when you start to figure out what is going on it becomes truly intense and a sight to behold. I would highly recommend this if you like this kind of movie.
Revolution (2012)
The two lead are the least interesting
The show had an interesting premise. The lights go out. What next? This could have been an interesting show the problem is that pretty quickly it became a hot mess. The bigger problem is that the two leads, Charlie and Miles, are the two least interesting characters on the show. I'm not sure if the show ever really had a destination in mind or the writers just made things up as they went along. Don't get me wrong there are worse shows out there and I do like the some of the characters but this show is a hot mess that often makes little sense. I'm not sure why people like it as much as they seem to but then again it does have its moments and I like a few of the actors so I will probably continue to watch myself....hey I like hot messes as much as the next person.
Dark Skies (2013)
Both psychological and alien thriller
I really enjoyed this. It works just as well as a psychological thriller as it does an alien thriller. The horror the family felt at each new revelation was palpable which is necessary for the plot to be believable. If you didn't at least feel horror for the family's plight the story wouldn't work. The movie did a good job at making at least that aspect of the story work. I was rather impressed with all the acting involved even the children who usually do drag a story like this. Both the characters and the story itself was interesting and kept my attention for the whole thing. I would recommend this movie for anyone who likes psychological and alien thrillers.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Boldy Going at last
I've heard plenty of whining about this movie so I went into it half thinking it wasn't going to be all that good. Boy was I surprised. It was an incredible action movie filled with allusions of past Trek. This might have been where the whining comes from because I know how people get. I thought the references were well done and all the character development was well placed and felt right for the plot. The story itself was beautifully told. There was not much about the latest Abrams vision of Trek that I didn't like. I am not sure if you will like it if you are not a fan of the franchise because there is a great deal of emotional impact based on the knowing of Trek lore but for those who like Trek but aren't purist you probably enjoy it. I am hoping for a third helping myself.
Mean Girls (2004)
The movie Lindsay Lohan will forever be known for
The movie Lindsay Lohan will be forever known for. This is the pinnacle of her success and the mirror of her true ability. It is a shame she threw it all away because she had genuine talent. The movie itself is surprisingly good and well written. People will compare it to "Heathers" which came before and "Easy A" which came after. All three are what I consider the best in the genre. The story itself is about a girl who has been home schooled for the better part of her life who is suddenly cast into the high school experience and the culture shock she endures. If you haven't seen this movie I would advise you do especially if you like this kind of movie or you like Tina Fey who wrote it.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Evil is a Journey not a Lightswitch
Evil isn't a light switch, it's a journey and it's a journey that Walter White has been on since the story began. Walter White could have gone far in life as a scientist but instead he took the easy path and became a lowly high school science teacher with a disabled son and another child on the way. Then he discovers he is dying from lung cancer. What is a man to do? Well this man starts to manufacture meth as a way to cushion his family for when he is gone. This show is very dark and yet very well written. There is not a needless character in the story. From the brother-in-law DEA agent to the wily lawyer, from the increasingly suspicious wife to the Ne'er-do-well business partner, Everyone has a purpose. In essence you are watching something truly beautiful. A good man breaking bad.....and taking everyone else down with him.
