It's a musical historical drama set in France from 1815 to 1832. "Les Misérables" primarily follows the pursuit of paroled convict Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) by Police Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe). Valjean is bitter and vengeful until a Bishop (Colm Wilkinson) offers him unexpected grace. Under a pseudonym, Valjean becomes a wealthy merchant. Despite Javert closing in, Valjean aids a poor sex worker who had worked at his factory. Fantine (Anne Hathaway) has a young child, Cosette (Isabelle Allen/Amanda Seyfried), and has been abused by innkeepers M and Mme Thénardier (Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter). However, their daughter, Éponine (Natalya Wallace/Samantha Barks) is Cosette's friend. Later, in Paris, all parties become involved in the Paris Uprising of 1832, in addition to student revolutionary, Marius (Eddie Redmayne).
I'm not a fan of most musicals. This one did reasonably well in telling the Victor Hugo story but took too long. The quality of singing was erratic, and Russell Crowe was downright bad. Hugh Jackman was just passable. Anne Hathaway was great for her acting and did some good singing. The lyrics also varied in quality. Some scenes were compelling visually; some were overly flamboyant. The 2012 musical told a marginally more complete "Les Misérables" story than the 1952 film. I now need to watch the 1998 film.

It's a libertarian, anti-fascist musical fantasy set in the Land of Oz. After an opening scene celebrating the death of the Wicked Witch of the West, we flashback to the developing relationship between self-absorbed trend-setting Galinda Upland (Ariana Grande-Butera) and highly intelligent but very "othered" Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo). They are attending Shiz University, where Galinda hopes to study sorcery with Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). Elphaba's younger disabled sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode), is also attending. Soon, a wealthy, good-looking Prince, Fiyero Tigelaar (Jonathan Bailey), joins the student body and becomes the object of Galinda's attentions.
The film follows Elphaba's learning to control her supernatural powers, the surprising friendship with Elphaba, their trip to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), and the cause of Elphaba's identification as the Wicked Witch of the West.
"Wicked" is not subtle in portraying privilege, otherness, discrimination, and authoritarian manipulation of the masses. The cinematography is clever and extravagant. The music and dance numbers, for me, were forgettable. Ariana Grande-Butera and Cynthia Erivo were both striking; Erivo was more memorable, along with Dr. Dillamond (Peter Dinklage voice) as the history professor goat.
I'll not bother with Part II when it comes out.
