The Peacemaker (1997)
Holy Cow, is this movie G R E A T !
I have a friend who worked in the nuclear disarmament group inside the State Department, and between his background and the book by the disarmament guy that Bush II kicked out of Iraq so we could invade it, I felt like I was on the edge of my seat throughout this movie.
I thought that George Clooney and Nicole Kidman had great chemistry together. I loved that they were consummate professionals during the action of the movie, and that their characters learned from each other.
The action across Russia and the former Yugoslavia had a feeling of vermissitude that just rung true. The street scenes in New York were the same.
Nanny McPhee (2005)
Holy Cow, Did I love this movie (but what was up with the colors?)
I loved what this movie said about parents sharing with their child, and the hurt of loss from a child's and a parent's standpoint. Every member of the family suffered greatly the loss of the the mother/wife, an dhow they dealt with it was so real. I ultimately figured the era was 1850s, but Good Lord what was with the color (I'm sorry, I meant to said colour). The evolution of Nanny MacPhee's look was cute, but I thought it should have been more understated. The evolution of Evangeline's look was wonderful. If you have children, see this movie, if you've suffered loss in your life, see this movie. If your nieces and nephews are incredibly rude, you should take them to this movie.
The notion that BIG MAMA'S HOUSE 2 should take in more money this weekend is insane, and proof positive that the Hollywood's ability to determine on a Saturday night how much money a movie has made for the entire weekend is faulty (at the least).
Can't Hardly Wait (1998)
If I'd gone to a party like this, my life might've turned out better
After a while, it's hard to remember back to that immortality of youth that this movie captures in a very clever way. The number of now famous actors and actresses who pop up in this epic is amazing. The characters are well polished: The jerks are jerkier, the nerds are nerdier, the jocks are even more jocked up, and as a boy who remembers what it was like to love the most popular girl from afar, the pain you suffered with that love was of a white hot intensity that the hero of this movie could not let go, much to his betterment, and to my loss (I didn't go, and she never knew).
Brilliant.
Corpse Bride (2005)
This is a classic? I don't think so!
Tim, you have to stop with the silly songs. Thinking that he's like some sort of modern day Gilbert & Sullivan, commenting on the foibles and subtle nuances of the modern day society, Tim Burton litters his movie with a series of show stopping songs (in the negative connotation of that phrase), and it takes just soooo very long to restart the movie after each one that it just kills the momentum of the movie.
So many reviews I've read have had a much higher opinion of the movie that just isn't justified by the product on the screen.
Cute story, but many of the other dead characters cried out to be played up. It's odd, but the main story was too padded, but the movie as a whole needed some additional padding. I'm not sure how he pulled that off.
Are We There Yet? (2005)
Not the best, definitely not the worst.
Well, the kids (to quote the PIONEER PRESS critic), should be tried as adults. Cube's character on the other hand is pretty childish. By the end of the movie, you have found out why he's that way, and the kids find out why being their way doesn't cut it in the world*. It's not the best thing in the realm of family movies, but it's not the worst either.
Based on how Cube's character grows up, I would see the next movie he makes, and that's what he's looking for from us. Good work- I end up liking him by the end of the movie. Heck, I even end up liking the truck driver
SPOILER: The kids dad should be horse whipped in a public square, the bastard. How on earth can you *do* that to two children that you've fathered, and put into the world?
Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino (2004)
The Mindset of a Red Sox Fan
I saw this during the 2004 season, and it went so far to explain what the Red Sox mean to me. They are the team I have followed since I was six years old (I'm in my fifties), and every time they have made the post-season, I have followed every game. I was convinced twice they they would win it all (1986 and 2003), and twice I saw them flush it all away.
The way they find the folks who have memorized every pitch is amazing; I'm not that way, but I understand what these folks are saying. I have also seen the revised version of this show, which updates with the results of the 2004 playoffs. I can hardly wait for this season to start, to see what will happen next...
