I had no clue what the plot of this movie was and was pleasantly surprised that the storyline was so creative and interesting. It was a great novel concept and Adam and Barbara were likable good main characters. The new family moving in and being so annoying was a great plot line and Catherine O'Hara was BRILLIANT as the dramatic artistic wife and stole the show for me. Winona was fine as the depressed moody teenager and I liked how she geled with the ghosts so quickly. My only problem with the movie is I don't think Beetlejuice was needed. He didn't add anything to the story and just felt like a side plot, so much so I was about 45 minutes in before I realised he hadn't even appeared and I'd forgotten he was even meant to be in it because you didn't need his presence in the movie. When he did appear he was just crude and gross, I guess his character might not have aged well but still, I don't think the story needed him. His jokes weren't funny and Keaton's portrayal felt like a cheap Jim Carrey. Other than the title character everything else was good. The effects were good for their time and it was funny and interesting.
