Being a huge fan of the Halloween franchise, I was on the fence about this remake, but kept an open mind because I wanted to give it a fair chance. I went into the film with the mindset that I would not compare it to the original, but see it as a fresh film. Either way, I must say I was disappointed.
I loved "1,000 Corpses" because it was different (although "Rejects" was horrible) and thought perhaps Rob might bring a fresh approach to the series. Unfortunately, it is filled with characters that are undeveloped and we care nothing about, along with the shaky camera angles and fast-paced editing that today's teenagers need for some reason. There's no real tension build-up, no development and horrible dialogue. I was glad that they used a lot of the original themes in the score, but often times the music was misplaced and made the scene very awkward.
There were also scenes that were intended to be scary and serious, but were actually quite humorous. I also got very distracted by the continuity error of time....in the first part of the movie, it is the 1970's, but then "15 years later" becomes 2007. ??? On a positive note, the film wasn't a total disaster. There were a few funny lines, some shots with actual atmospheric mood, and the end chase sequence with Laurie Strode was pretty good. Nice mixture of horror movie natives, although many of them played characters that were irrelevant to the story.
I think Rob missed the main point of the film: Michael Myers was scary because he was pure evil. No back story. It's scarier that he was from a normal family and just killed for no reason as opposed to being this disturbed child that came from a bad home life. And Dr. Loomis was an interesting character before because he was obsessed with Michael...now he's a sell-out who gives up and cashes in on it by writing a book. Totally different character.
Overall, it's worth watching I guess, but I imagine most fans of the series will be disappointed. Young teenagers will probably have a blast with this, but for the rest of us who appreciate scary films with good characters, interesting story, atmosphere, and style: we won't.

I was so disappointed about this. When I first heard they were remaking it, I was worried, but gave it every chance to actually be good. It wasn't. Everything that was good in the original was ruined in this one. There was no "atmosphere" to it, it was just a bunch of overly-beautiful WB-age stars thinly acting out a poor script. The whole purpose of the lighthouse and Stevie Wayne was to present this feeling of isolation and loneliness...in the new one, they seem to rarely use the lighthouse at all. There are extra points in the plot that are unnecessary and... and, I can just go on and on. It was just horrible.
Then, I tried looking at it not as a "remake" but just as a regular movie, as though I was seeing the story for the first time. But, you know what: it still sucks. It doesn't capture you. There are a few good scenes and shots, but overall I just kept wondering when it would be over. So much potential with a story and it just didn't work.
Unfortunately, that's Hollywood today. Horror films can be well made at the same time. Maybe they should stop relying so much on picture-perfect actors and corny digital special effects and start focusing more on the story, the characters, the music (Lord, the original score added so much), and just making it entertaining! 3 out of 10.

For a remake, this was not bad...but it wasn't excellent either. I suppose a viewer who knew nothing of the story beforehand would be thoroughly entertained, but since I know a lot about the actual events, I had a few problems with it. The producers had said they wanted this film to not be a repeat of the original, yet focus more on the book. This really didn't happen, though. The movie had a lot of "Hollywood" elements, including the big finale, which was not in the book. And the thing of it is, there are some great incidents from the book they could have played on to be more effective, but they left them out (such as the white hooded figure they saw, the red room in the basement, etc.). And Jodie would've been scarier if they left it as a pig! On a plus side, there was good character development (which is rare in films today) and the actors gave a nice performance. The film definitely had its share of humorous lines and creepy scares...I just think they could have done a little more with it. It's definitely worth watching, though.
And one thing that really puzzled me...when they show clips of home movies from when the moved in, there is a quick clip of the two sons playing in the water. They moved in the house around December...wouldn't the water be a little cold in Long Island??? At any rate, it's worth watching and could be a great date movie.
