Out of Time (1988 TV Movie)
1/10
Bill Maher finally convinced me...
4 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
... There is no God.

Honestly. This might be one of the worst films I've ever seen. So, unless you love so-bad-it's-good movies, I'd stay well clear of this one. And even if you do, be prepared to be bored for 93 minutes.

A police officer is hunting after a bad man and is somehow transported a hundred year back in time (from 2088 to 1988). Here he meets his great-great-grandfather, and together they try to catch the bad man.

The time traveler knows all about the Vietnam war and the Watergate scandal (oddly specific), but somehow doesn't understand cars and cigarettes. It makes no sense.

The script is weak, the humor doesn't work, and the pacing is off.

An extremely rare 1/10 from me.

I like the rush, but...

Warning: Spoilers
In a scripted and templated show the production and editing crew manages to get maximum production value out of very little footage - this from setup in a very repetitive, operation based industry.

As a (very) small time gold investor, I enjoy watching the mechanics of getting gold out of the ground, even though there really is not much else going on to peak ones fascination - although there is a lot to fuels ones infuriation.

As an IT manager I've caught myself identifying a number of issues with the way Dave is running his operation . I must say I hope most of the issues are "fake", and are "created" to keep the viewer interested, because there are a lot of really silly and easily mitigated mistakes going on in this show.

1. Not using the wonders of modern day technology to your advantage.

Why in the world is the team waiting for Dave to show up before letting him know that there is some problem with the progression of finding gold? Why aren't they calling him? We've invented mobile phones for this exact reason. It gives you the possibility of communicating with people even from great distances. Why would you not use this to your advantage?

2. No risk management A lot of the issues arising are down to the fact that Dave isn't really keen on doing easy risk management. In the latest episode I watched it was a surprise to the team that they had to water the road because of dust issues. The team were told that the rock quarry had had numerous complaint of dust from all the neighbours. Why not ask the simple question: "Any trouble or complaints I should be worried about?" before leasing the ground? It would be so easy and save Dave thousands in mitigation costs.

3. Bad team management If you have a team member say to you at the end of the season: "Listen, the season is over, we reached our goal, I lost my best friend in the process and I miss my wife and kids. So no, I don't want to expand the season five weeks to continue the adventure. I love you and I hope you understand." Just to pull him right back, because you need a water truck. That's really uncool and a sure way to break your employees spirits.

4. Planning (have spare part or know how to get them) Lastly, why Dave haven't made any plans on how to get spare parts if something breaks is beyond me. A broken bolt can apparently set an mining operation back 6 weeks. A little bit of pre-season planning would get Dave a long way.

I'll still be watching the show though with the hopes that most of the drama is created for the views. If not, I really hope Dave reads this and that he makes the very small and obvious changes to make his operation just a little more professional. He most know that protentional business partners are watching as well and can see all the silly mistakes that all us uninitiated viewers can so easily identify.

Would have been better with Rebecca De Mornay and Clive Warren in it
30 May 2020
I think Charlie Brooker got some things wrong in the part of the anthology where this dude got his wife installed into his brain. The main parts should have obviously have gone to Clive Warren and Rebecca De Mornay as they where part of the creator of the story's original vision.

Jimmy Carr: Funny Business (2016 TV Special)
8/10
The king of the heckles is at it again
25 March 2016
If you get easily offended, you won't like this show. If you sometimes get offended, you won't like this show. If you never get offended, you'll absolutely love this show.

Jimmy Carr is a notorious divider of audiences. With his jokes he severely pushes the limits of ethics and morality, and makes jokes of subjects that most other comedians (even in today's society) wouldn't even touch with an iron rod. And for the most parts of the show this approach works brilliantly.

I'm not generally a big fan of stand up comedians that uses explicit sexual contents as a basis of their stand up routine. Mostly because I find that jokes on the subject usually's delivered in a very crude and unsophisticated manner. But Jimmy Carr manages to turn a simple sex joke that normally would be used for shocking effect and cheap laughs into comedy art. His confidence and timing is just that good.

In this routine he involves the audience quite a bit via his amazing observational comedy, which he is very well known for in Britain. He asks audience members a bunch of mundane questions and perceives to destroy them after receiving their answers. Perhaps not very original, but nevertheless very amusing. He also does a bit where he includes the audience in a way that I for one haven't seen before. I won't reveal the gimmick in this review, other than to say it worked fantastically and made me laugh out loud.

Personally I've never much enjoyed heckling in stand up routines, and Jimmy has quite a big segment in the show devoted to it. This was the only part of the show that really didn't work for me. Not because of Jimmy's abilities to cope with the material being thrown at him, but rather that people in the audience only shouted stuff where the only correct response would be: "something, something 'Your mom!'". And for the most parts that was what his response was.

All in all a very entertaining show, good for loads of laughs. I think I can say with a fair amount of certainty: You'll either love or hate this show. I, for one, loved it.
