Trap is top tier M Night Shyamalan.
Us Night-heads know: implausible-story-turns are a feature-not-bug.
Night directs modern day fables with 'B-movie veneer' & A-level craftsmanship.
We 'just-go-with-it' as Night gets at deeper spiritual truths.
'Trap' is possibly Night's most autobiographical film. As many commentators have pointed out: this is quite obviously a 'Girl Dad', stuck at a Taylor Swift concert, amusing himself with pitch-black story telling possibilities.
However the pic takes some great sharp left turns that left me giddy and grinning.
For those poking deeper, you'll find a story of the masks we wear and the situations in life that seek to tear those masks right off.
But Night is more than happy this-go-round to let ya just get on the ride and shriek and laugh at the appropriate times.
Josh Hartnett continues the Hartnett-aissance with fantastic work here. He's giving himself over completely to Night's vision of Serial-Dad. And it's gangbusters.
Those who hate this movie were never going for the 'Night' reasons anyway.
Us hardcore fans can cackle as another feather decorates the Night-cap.
4 1/2 stars out of 5.
