Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin (2020)
Toxic, terrible plotlines, bad acting
I will be honest, I have not watched this serial since the beginning. I am currently visiting my aunt, and I have had the misfortune of sitting through this headache. As most reviewers have already mentioned, the characters do not make very good or moral decisions. I personally don't watch Indian TV shows because of the melodramatic plots, unrealistic situations, and the fact that the cameraman does more work than the actors.
I mean seriously... why does the entire cast have to stand in one room while the camera pans and zooms in on each person's face when something even remotely "interesting" happens. I don't think it's interesting, but that's the word I am using to describe it.
Now, onto the specifics... the cast of the show is really bad at acting. The child actress is especially annoying because I think she's forced to speak in a "cute" manner. Just let her speak normally. It's not cute. It's annoying. She seems too old to be talking that way. The rest of the cast can't really cry or express emotions in a natural manner.
It is toxic because too many responsibilities are placed on children. The elders in the house involve kids in their plans, even if they're plotting something harmful. The younger girl is basically ignored until she's a plot device. This is not okay. When the elders are dealing with complicated emotions and situations, the kids should not be involved in this. It's unrealistic but also sets a toxic example for viewers.
Just avoid it. You're not missing much. I would suggest 'Katha Ankahee' instead.
Kastanjemanden (2021)
A slow burn, but worth it in the end
I am a huge fan of thrilers and detective shows from European countries. This is a typical Nordic noir. The production value, cinematography and acting is all well done.
Plot wise, I was intriged from the first episode but I was not able to binge watch this show. It actually took me a couple tries to really get into it once I reached mid season. I am not sure if this is because I couldn't keep up or it just wasn't attention grabbing enough. Unlike many other shows, this one took me a few weeks to finish.
I found myself slightly frustrated with the key actors'' decisions. For example, there were many times when I was confused why they didn't call for back-up. Maybe this is more typical in Danish shows... I am not sure. It's my first introduction to popular media from Denmark. I also felt that the finale was rushed, and I was less than happy with the lack of logical answers. I mean, I have no problem with shows that have ambiguous endings. The Leftovers, for example, always left me with more questions than answers. It worked in that case. However, the ending for this show is pretty closed off. It just didn't explain certain sub plots. Why were those important then?
Overall, I didn't guess who the killer was and I was on the edge of my seat in the last two episodes. My only suggestion to non-Danish speakers - watch this with subtitles. The dubbing just takes away so much from the experience.
Snack vs. Chef (2022)
There some issues, but entertaining show overall
This show doesn't pretend to be something it's not. It is literally a show where contestants recreate snacks, and then they get a chance to show something that's entirely their own.
Personally, I prefer to see more of the contestants and judges than the over-the-top hosts. However, this show proves that too much or too little of anything is never good. The hosts are pretty much useless. They have maybe 5-6 lines per episode, and they just ask the contestant to tell them about their snack. The jokes are atrocious, and sometimes it elicits forced laughter. Most of the time it is just awkward and cringe. If there is a second season, I hope that they choose better hosts that are more interactive or at least anchor the show.
I really like Ali Bouzari. He's clearly smart but he's humble, sweet, and actually funnier than the "comedians" that are hosting the show. I think he's a great judge. I don't mind Helen either. I think the two of them work well together.
Overall, it's a binge-able show where the contestants are not clout chasers or overly pretentious. I felt like I saw some real people and as humans naturally do, there were some hits and misses. The budget for the show doesn't seem to be a lot, but I saw some innovative snacks. This show is exactly what it aims to recreate - a snack. Maybe next season, it'll be a meal.
The Serpent (2021)
Gripping from start to finish
This a well-paced drama, and I binge watched the entire mini series in one day. I think the production is good quality. The main lead, the dutch diplomat, was a bit over-the-top at times but I like the casting overall.
I will be honest, I don't know many details about the actual case, but it seems that the writers have done a fine job of capturing the feel of the 70s. This was a time when racism, colonialism, sexism, etc. Were still fairly common and casually accepted.
I understand that the time flipping might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it worked for me because it kept me on my toes. I found the storytelling and the chase quite captivating, and I would definitely recommend this show.
Love Is Blind (2020)
Downhill since Season 1
Season 1 was amazing. It had the right amount of drama and some really interesting people/ couples. There were some genuine people on this show, and I loved seeing the friendships between the cast members. Of course, there's a villain of the season, but she just laid low and then apologized for what happened.
Season 2 was a mess, but it wasn't super intense or that memorable.
Then came season 3, and it is so awful. The finale and the reunion really repulsed me. There was so much backlash against one person, but nobody was mentioning the other red flags in the room. Then there's the "have my girl's back" mentality, which I usually like, but it is unwarranted in this case. There are two sides to every story, and only one of them (an unreliable narrator) was allowed to voice theirs. The rest just jumpd on the Z bandwagon. I seriously hope that the contestants get mental health resources from the show because this is just awful. I watched a grown man cry out of confusion, remorse, and frustration. The level of disrespect and defamation that poor man is facing is just heartbreaking. He's not perfect and he's immature, but this is not okay.
The hosts are awful too. Vanessa didn't ask the right questions, and Nick was just boring. I won't be watching this show again.
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
A roller coaster ride that leaves a bad after taste
This is a pretty interesting show that kept me on my toes the entire time. There are certainly "twists" that are revealed in due time.
At first, I thought this was a typical thriller where one of the protagonists start to find out more details and uncovers a mystery. This is true, but there are mysteries on different levels. This is also a surrealism mystery.
From the get go, I knew that David was not the bad guy. I had a feeling that something sinister was going on with Adele. For the most part, I wasn't a big fan of Louise either. She definitely made some silly decisions and didn't mind her own business. This is especially true in the final episode because if she hadn't made the decision to "travel," she would have been safe. Also, any logical person would wait for the cops and firemen. What exactly was she trying to accomplish?
I predicted the end when I realized what was happening. I have no issues with the "bad guy" getting away with it. It's not realistic that there's always a happy ending. If anything, I am sick of this trope which is prominent in most American shows and movies. Was I shocked by the final revelation? Yes and no. I could tell that Rob played an important role in this show. However, my problem is with the build up to this reveal. It doesn't make much sense that this drug addict who is clearly jealous of Adele's wealth and lifestyle would become so obsessed with David. I would have liked to see a bit more interaction with these two characters to better understand this motivation. The ending felt very rushed.
The show could have also been better if it was a little shorter. Certain details or storylines were not that necessary. Maybe they could have used that time to show us more flashbacks, I don't know. I think they've left enough ambiguity at the end to warrant a second season, so I guess we'll see.
School of Chocolate (2021)
Fun and inspiring!
I love this show so much. I have to say that I follow chef Amaury on Instagram. That man is beyond talented, and I can't even comprehend how his mind works. He is so creative. After watching this show, I realized how patient and humble he is.
Chef Amaury is such a wonderful teacher. It didn't matter how well or badly the contestants were doing, he always gave good feedback. He pointed out a negative and a positive for all of them. Watching him work with chocolate is thrilling, but it's also really nice to see a show that promotes learning. There are no eliminations, which is really refreshing.
There's no yelling or dramatics for the sake of entertainment. There is some drama between the contestants, but that's a given considering there's a prize at the end. It's really just wholesome, and I can't bake at all but I enjoyed every bit of this ride. I binge-watched the whole thing.
Mindhunter (2017)
We need season 3!
Please bring it back! I absolutely love this series. It is so well executed. The acting, the tension, attention to details, colour scheme, cinematography, music score, I could go on and on. I first watched it when it came out, and I have rewatched it a few times.
It's a slow burn, and it works well. I really appreciate how carefully they chose the actors who play the serial killers. They really embodied the mannerisms of those monsters. Then we see the main characters grappling with their own demons and curiosity, and trying to make sense of it all.
I understand that it always comes down to money, but I am a little disappointed that this show was abandoned at such a pivotal point. I want to see how it ends! This is as close to British procedurals as we've gotten, and I am craving for more.
The Watcher (2022)
It's better to watch/ read about the cases than to watch this hot mess
I know the case that this show is loosely "based on," which is an overstatement. There are many insane embellishments, and a lot of unnecessary drama that was thrown in to make this into a long enough show.
The show uses two real-life cases. The main one is based on the creepy letters received by a family who purchased 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey. The show has taken a lot of creative liberties here because there really wasn't much to it. The family never even moved in.
The second case is the one about John Graff, which is based on real-life murderer and fugitive John List. He killed his family in the early 1970s, cut his pictures out of all photos, and then fled. It wasn't until 18 years later when America's Most Wanted aired a reconstruction of John List that he was finally caught. This is pretty incredible!
John's is an interesting case. I really suggest that people listen to a podcast or watch a Youtube video about these cases, rather than waste time on this hyped up piece of trash.
Also, the characters are over-exagerated and so comedic to the point that you don't want to root for any of them. The unprovoked lashing out or anger, specifically from Dean, just makes me not care at all about what is happening.
There are many people who are giving this a low rating because we never find out who was sending the letters. This part I am not going to hold against this show because even the real case was never solved.
However, I can't forgive the terrible acting, and the many unnecessary liberties this show has taken. While I don't mind the blending of different real life cases, it just doesn't work here.
I am surprised by high reviews calling this show "art house" or that people are "missing the point." There is nothing deep or cerebral here. If you really want something cerebral, then watch Twin Peaks or The Leftovers or The OA. This is as far away from "art house" as you can get. The characters are too shallow and one dimensional, and the plotline is too messy for this show to have any "deeper" meaning. It's not even binge-worthy.
Easy-Bake Battle: The Home Cooking Competition (2022)
Misleading show title. Another Netflix bait!
I was so excited to see this show in my Netflix recommended. The Easy Bake oven was something I dreamed of having as a kid! I also thought it would be such a neat concept to see how different people adapt to and cook fabulous dishes in the easy bake oven.
The reveal in the final moments of the first episode left me disappointedd. They basically called it an upgraded easy bake. No honey, that's just an oven! I don't get why they would call it that. It's not even a baking show. It's a cooking show, so the title seems really bait-y.
I kind of agree with another reviewer that there is some favoritism going on.
The only redeeming quality is the main judge. He is nice, calm, caring, and funny. This is kind of rare these days. Many hosts on cooking/ baking shows are over-the-top and obnoxious, but I really like his energy!
I wouldn't really recommend this show, but if you got nothing to watch and don't want to really follow what's playing, then this is an okay show for background noise.
Monsters (2022)
Give Evan Peters his award, already!
This show is somehow intense, bingeworthy, and a beautiful artistic show at the same time. I find this combination hard to come by.
I am a regular true crime consumer. I thought I knew a lot about Dahmer already, but watching this show was eye opening. I feel like the writers did a wonderful job of showing us Dahmer's perspective, and what made him the killer we know him to be. It was hard for me to watch at times.
I can't say enough about Evan Peters. He's an underrated, phenomenal actor. He becomes his character. At times, I forgot that this is an actor, not Dahmer. I don't get creeped out easily, but he definitely gave me the creeps. He's truly brilliant!
I've had issues with other documentaries or true crime dramas because they tend to glorify the killer. Not this one! There are times when I might have empathized with him (when he was younger), but he is certainly not glorified. We see a lot more about the victims. I especially loved watching the episode about Tony. The fact that we see the victim's perspective, even in the cinematography and audio, is amazing.
I understand some people have issues with certain liberties that the creators have taken, but I don't think they deviate from the main tragedy or events. I knew going in that Glenda wasn't the next door neighbor, but it didn't bother me.
Some people also have an issue with the show trying to be "woke." It's really not. While I can't attest to the prank calls and few other details, much of the frustration we feel with the investigation (or lack thereof) is true. Dahmer was operating during a time when racism, homophobia, and misconceptions around HIV were rampant. Not that these issues have ended, but it was much worse then. We can't deny that.
I think the show is beautifully done, and the actors have done a phenomenal job. It's not a gorefest, but it's disturbing. I went in with high expectations, and the show went beyond them! I really recommend giving this show a chance.
Dated and Related (2022)
(Un)Real and boring cringefest
I watch a lot of Reality TV. Love Island (all countries), Too Hot To Handle, The Bachelor(ette) Franchise, Ex on the Beach, 90 Day Fiancé, The Circle, etc. I even watched a few random Reality Tv shows on Amazon Prime. This is probably the worst one out there.
The cast is horrible. There is no chemistry, and no one to root for. It also tends to focus on two girls that all the men seem to gravitate towards. Didn't they try to see what the contestants like to ensure that there is some fair play on the show?
It almost felt like the contestants had signed up to be imprisoned in the villa. It's a beautiful location, but you barely even see it. They never leave! Dates are lame and pretty rare. No fun activities or any space to spice things up or to even create any drama. So, there's no entertainment value.
The contestants, except for one girl, are quite boring and have very shallow/ superficial connections. If they are not boring, I didn't have a chance to see any personality because the show is heavily edited.
The finale was boring too. The host is really cringe, and has no charm. Every time she calls, the contestants act all surprised as if anybody else ever uses that phone.
I noticed some posts saying that the show is borderline incestuous. I didn't necessarily think that, but there was one particular "challenge" regarding a bath that may have crossed a line for many people. I didn't really think the siblings were acting odd, though. They seem very close, and nothing wrong with that.
Literally, pick anything else to watch. I still question my sanity, considering I finished the show.
The One That Got Away (2022)
A really interesting dating reality show
I agree with the other review that this show is a classier version of Ex on the Beach. I think that this show could use a bit more work, but it had an interesting first season.
The casting for most part is fantastic! I really love Anthony. Give that man his own show! He's so fun, entertaining, hilarious, sassy, and amazing. I love every single appearance he makes on the screen. It's also nice to see more representation on a dating show, and hopefully there will be more in the next season.
I like to see the interactions between the people from the past that show up. I like to see the friendships that form on reality TV.
I am not a big fan of the host. She's meh. Not bad, not great.
The main cast is okay. I enjoy watching how delusional Alyssa is, and her cringe dates are amusing. It's so obvious that she's not getting people she expected to see. I am not a big fan of Ashley. She definitely needs to work through her insecurities. She gives men mixed signals, and gets jealous over men she's not even into. I am not a big fan, but I guess it makes for some entertaining drama.
Give this show a try if you have watched all other reality TV, and are craving some more. I hope there will be a second season. I also really hope Anthony gets his own show because I will watch all of it!
Cosmic Love (2022)
Tries to be "new," but ultimately fails
I watch a lot of reality TV. I know it's trash TV, but there are certain shows that I think do it very well. Love Island franchise, The Bachelor franchise, 90 Day Fiance, Too Hot To Handle, Ex on the Beach, Love is Blind, etc. I have watched it all.
This one doesn't meet the level of entertainment, production, or even format of those shows.
First of all, there is no proper host. Some "orb" talks to them, and to me it seems to mimic the voice from THTH. Why? I think it may have been better to have an actual host.
Secondly, I am a little confused about the format. There are 4 people chosen to represent the 4 elements. If they're the main people, then how come there's not enough effort from the rest of the cast to get to know them? I was initially under the impression that the 4 elements would be more in charge like in the Bachelor. Either make all the contestants equals in choosing like in Love Island or Love is Blind, or clearly lay out the format for eliminations.
The eliminations don't really take place until later on. You also can't connect with any contestants because you see so less of them. There are too many in the house. The show ends up being a bit chaotic near the middle of the season, but not in a good drama kind of way. It just makes the formatting kind of useless and ineffective.
Third, I know these shows are mostly scripted and not really as "real" as they claim to be. However, the conversations are sooooo awkward and mostly cringe. This is an issue with the editing process. I don't really care for any of the people I see. I think there's also some issue with casting because certain elements garnered more interest than others. The last three episodes get a little better, but it's too late by then. I learned a bit more about the elements and those they chose at the end, but it still doesn't save the show for me.
Of all the reality TV shows I have watched, this one is least entertaining. I don't feel inclined to be invested in many of the contestants.
The Face (2013)
"Check your lipstick before you come and talk to me"
If you know this quote, you know Naomi Campbell does not mess around.
The Good:
I think show is quite different from ANTM, and I like it. It doesn't have many gimmicks and the girls start to experience the real modeling world fairly quickly.
I loved watching Erin as a mentor. She is a wonderful model, but she is humble. Her warmth towards her girls was really refreshing. Although, I wonder if her team would have done better if she was a bit more tough on them.
The Medium:
Naomi Campbell is quite harsh and there's no denying that she has a bad attitude. There were quite a few episodes where she was petty, rude, and unprofessional. Her team was quite catty, and I wish she had given them a bit more support in resolving their issues. She basically told them to just deal with it and move on, and I think this negatively affected them because they just let it fester. There are also many times when they looked to her for some encouragement, but she was quite harsh with them instead.
That being said, she makes for great TV and she trained her team to have a thick skin. She also takes accountability. When her team loses, she says "we lost" but when they win, she says "you won." She also doesn't deal with sass and attitude from the contestants the way Tyra Banks has. She is confident and secure in herself.
The Bad:
Petty, petty, petty! I did not enjoy the feud between Caroline and Naomi. It is unprofessional, and doesn't reflect well or set a good example for the girls. I mean that first elimination was brutal.
The elimination format is not fair, and many strong contestans went home over others that were just coasting. I hope it gave the contestants a good platform for success because the prize isn't really that great.
Overall, I think it was a fun show to binge-watch, and Naomi continues to deliver that sass and kind of b*tchiness she's known for.
Euphoria (2019)
I don't think it's unrealistic
I have noticed that this show is quite divisive when it comes to reviews and ratings. Some say that it's too over-the-top, and doesn't seem realistic. Others are in awe of the beautiful cinematography, the acting, and the music score.
I tend to agree that this is a beautiful show. I am not a huge fan of seeing so many penises on the screen, and I could never watch this comfortably with my family. However, I think it makes a good point. Why am I more uncomfortable seeing naked men than naked women?
Anyway, I am late to the party. I never really thought about watching this show until I began teaching a course on Gender and Pop Culture at my university. I gave the students freedom to write about any TV show they like. 90% of my students wrote about this show. I was intrigued by this. I wanted to see it for myself.
After watching the first season, I can definitely say that this show quite remarkable and relatable. I don't think every single teen is going through this, but we have to admit that there are teenagers who deal with sex, drugs, and violence on a daily basis. I don't like to think they are, but it's the reality. I could see myself in a lot of these situations, but not at the extreme it is portrayed in the show. I didn't drink or do drugs as a teenager, but I knew people that did. I dated guys that were too old for me, and looking back... "that's kinda rape-y" (to quite Rue). I also ended up at a lot of parties where I saw this kind of behavior. I knew girls that were getting naked in front of their computers and making money. I also knew girls who were insecure, and slept with many guys in high school. I knew a couple girls who were teen moms. I had a friend who ended up in rehab because of substance abuse. I was the one who found her passed out in the back alley of a department store I used to work at.
My Gen Z students really related to it. It's not completely out of touch with reality as the 1/10 reviews say. I also don't understand that people are complaining about adults playing teenagers. I mean, what high school show doesn't do that? Also, do I really want to see naked teenagers on my screen? No. Thank you.
Most of all, I have depression and watching Rue has been a very uncomfortable experience for me. Zendaya is a remarkable actor, and I think the portrayal of mental health issues is really well done in this show. I think the same goes for its portrayal of sex among teenage girls. The bit about men's expectations due to porn was quite spot on.
There are many red herrings, and foreshadowing in this show that keeps me on the edge of my seat. This show is more than its cinematography and make-up. It has a message, and I am here for it.
Making the Cut (2020)
Needs work but has improved over the seasons
I am writing this review after watching all 2 seasons back to back! I know. I was hoping that the show would get better after the first season. It doesn't!
Let's begin with the first season. I think there's too much emphasis on Heidi and Tim, especially Heidi. She is so cringe. There are bits where they show Heidi and Tim doing activities around the city, but it didn't add anything to the show. I think a better idea would be to show them going around and showing important stores or places that have inspired fashion around the city.
On that note, I don't think it was fair to have designers come to New York and not do anything there, just to make them fly to Paris. Some of the designers were European, and could have really saved some time. Also, flying from US to France to Japan, then home, then back to the US is really a waste of time, and I could see the designers were tired and jet lagged.
Now, when it comes to all seasons... the format is ridiculous.
The designers should be able to communicate with the seamstresses directly. I thought it was really unfair for those who are not native English speakers. To have to come back and see that your garment is not done... it's just added non sense that they should not be dealing with. Plus, I want to see more of the designers and their creations! I wish I could see more of the designers than the judges.
The runway is god-awful. I could barely see the details of the garments. The comments by the judges are not really that helpful. In some cases, they're even rude and mean girl comments. The music is horrid! The runways were too distracting in some of the episodes and took away from the garments.
FInally, the elimination format is nonsensical. I would prefer that they talk to and give critical feedback to each designer. If that doesn't work, then at least talk to the top and the bottom three. And let them know where they stand!
Don't do the whole "did you change your mind?" It is soooo tacky! For the most part, they've already made the decision, but they want to make the designer beg. Let them have their integrity. It is so insulting.
Lastly, the finales in last two seasons are awful. I do not agree with any of the winners. Those who are extremely creative and the FUTURE of fashion should NOT be in this show. They're not looking for the next glonal brand. They're looking for the next Zara or H&M retail designers. This is a huge BJ to Amazon and a big FU to fashion designers. They don't want creativity. If a good design does win, then they cheap-ify and sell a gross polyester version of it on Amazon. Personally, I wouldn't want that as a designer.
Edit: I am watching the third season, and I just watched Jeremy Scott's tatrum. It was abusive, and really made me sad for these designers. They have done one day challenges back to back to save production costs, but the designers are treated badly because they are exhausted! They have spent so much money in the past on travel, but they can't give at least 2 days to the designers. Jeremy Scott yelled and threw a book while Yannick had to stand there and take it. Tim Gunn looked shaken up, but Heidi did nothign to stop this. Then he has the audacity to say that he did it out of frustration because they care about them. This is disgusting and abusive behaviour.
Edit 2: I am happy with Season 3 finale! I think they finally gave an opportunity to the right designer. He is amazing, and so creative! I wish I could see how his brain works. Giving extra star for this.
Kimi (2022)
Laughable plot and ending
I am starting to wonder if the director paid off the critics over on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie is so predictable, and full of ridiculous plot holes that are never addressed. The fact that she is agoraphobic is not groundbreaking at all, and I don't get why she can't just call the cops. Why does it take her so long? And when she finally calls, it is so ridiculously timed and done. Don't watch this movie and waste your time. Take a nap instead.
There's Someone Inside Your House (2021)
A terrible take on Scream, I know what you did last summer
I am being generous by giving it 2 stars. I watched the first 20 minutes and I couldn't do it anymore. I skipped to the end, and I had guessed the killer and it was anticlimactic. Terrible "plot," if you can call it that. Mediocre acting, and the murder scenes I witnessed were sub par. It's a waste of time.
Is It Cake? (2022)
Annoying host, and show doesn't give enough space to the actual talent
I agree with many of the reviewers about the host. He seems really fake, and he's overly dramatic. The bakers are super talented, and I wish they had more screen time. The 4 stars are only for the wonderful bakers in this show. I hope they get the exposure they deserve after this.
The concept could be interesting, butthe show needs some work. For example, why are the bakers just sitting there all day if they can't proceed?
Don't F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer (2019)
A gripping, but unnecessary "pat on the back"
I'll be honest. I binge-watched the entire thing in one sitting. The documentary definitely has a click-baity title, and although I already knew about this case, I was drawn to it.
Firstly, I think the production is good. I like the several different aspects of "sleuthing" that they show. That is both terrifying (that it's this easy for someone to find someone's location), but also quite fascinating. The different theories about movies and Luka's movements is interesting too.
However, this documentary has some major flaws. The biggest issue is that the internet sleuths are portrayed as heroes. If only the police listened to them, the murder wouldn't have occurred!! But is that REALLY true? No. The most hilarious part is that Luka wanted to be famous. The sock puppet accounts were literally telling the sleuths what his name was, and he was even giving them clues. Plus, he never really tried to hide himself. He didn't change his identity until after the police got involved. Their "investigation" didn't contribute anything to the capture of Luka.
Also, some of the footage was hard to watch, and quite unnecessary. They didn't have to show as much as they did... multiple times! I felt uncomfortable with their obsession of these cat videos. They seemed to be way more fixated on the cats than the poor man who was brutally murdered and dismembered! Now, I am not saying I don't care about cats, but this show really glorified the voyeuristic nature of the videos and those that led to Luka gaining exactly what he wanted... notoriety! Also, to compare watching the cat videos to the 9/11 attacks is laughable. I mean, seriously?
Then at the end, they have this holier than thou attitude where they call us (the viewers) complicit. I am sorry... but, really?? Why did they make this documentary in the first place? Why did they keep giving him attention and possibly encouraging him to continue to kill? They also brushed past the part when a poor Namibian guy who driven to commit suicide because of their actions.
I really prefer documentaries that don't glorify the kiler. This one is just giving Luka what he wants, and they're trying to share the blame. I recommend listening to a podcast or watching the YouTube documentary if you're interested in this case.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
There's no I in Heaven. Hilarious show for True Crime/ Thriller fans!
I am quite surprised at the low rating, but I get it. Judging from some of the reviews and Reddit comments I have come across, this is a divisive show.
To truly enjoy this series, I think it's important that you have watched enough "whodunit" movies and shows. I am thinking Rear Window, Vertigo, The Girl on The Train, The Woman in the Window, etc. This is a parody! Unlike movies like "Scary Movie," this one doesn't rely as much on slapstick comedy, though there is definitely some of that in here. The humour is mostly dry, and I personally love that kind of humour.
To some, it is "too serious" to be a comedy, but I disagree with that. I went into this show knowing that it was going to be over the top. I mean the convoluted title is a dead give-away! The story about how the daughter died is sooo far-fetched it's hilarious. Also, the gag with the mailbox, the casserole, and the words on the tombstone is so funny. Also, the wine glass could fit an entire bottle in one, and it was an average size. That also made me chuckle. The ending is great too! I am somewhat proud that I guessed it right, haha. BINGO. Although, it could honestly be something really bizarre and I would still give this a high rating!
At times, I got so into the "mystery" that I forgot it was a parody. The lighthouse keeper is hilarious, and he brought me back to the realization that I was taking it too seriously. Clearly, it's not perfect. But c'mon! It's not supposed to be. The dialogue, the gags, the references... I loved it all. Don't take it seriously, and you'll enjoy it too. Set your brain aside, pour a glass of wine, and enjoy this fun ride.
Crazy Delicious (2020)
Interesting idea, terrible execution
First of all, what is going on with the judges being called Gods? Wearing togas... how did they agree to this? This show is really pretentious, and the host makes me uncomfortable. Either the contestants are not right or the judges aren't. It just doesn't work. One of the cooks even put burnt plantain chips in her food, and thought the judges wouldn't notice.
The food doesn't look good either. There's no artistry in the presentation as I would have expected. Beyond the ridiculous set (looks like a collection of Willy Wonka's rejects), and the pretentious judges, I found one of the contestants in the first episode to be really cringey. She would randomly sing, and she even sang while the judges were eating her food. It's so bad, and so is the editing.
The main pictures for this show on Netflix is also misleading. Not at all what I expected.
The Big Family Cooking Showdown (2017)
Watching Season 1 and won't be watching anymore
The show is slow... the tension is fake. I really dislike the judges. I don't get the sound engineers, either. Why do they emphasize the sounds of heavy breathing, slurping, chewing, biting, eating. It's all very annoying, and really puts me off. The judge's comments are not helpful or enlightening. The male judge seems kind of done and intense for no reason. He's sort of creepy as he just watches people off in the back. He also pauses and asks, "who cooked this?" and then awkwardly waits forever to give obvious compliments.
I am also surprised at how many contestants are cooking curries all the time. It makes more sense when it is a family with an Indian heritage, but I still want to see more diversity and variety of foods. It seems to be the default cuisine.
"I can't hide my disappointment" in this show, but I do enjoy watching the families and Nadiya is a great host.
The Final Table: India (2018)
Fun judges, and a good critique from the main Chef
Personally, I enjoyed this episode because the judges were all nice, funny, and light-hearted. Vineet was also quite humble and had a great presence on the show. I also really liked seeing the various contestants deal wth the "twist," which is Butter Chicken without Chicken. So why the low score?
India is a beautiful country full of many different cultures, which means there are thousands of dishes that could have been chosen. I was not happy with the choice of Butter Chicken. It's already global and it has been westernized a lot. Some would even argue it could fit well in the UK context. I would have liked them to choose an already vegetarian dish, and something that introduces something new from Indian cuisine to the international stage.
I am honestly sick of the lack representation and diversity in many of these shows, and this one is no exception. It's very American and biased towards a Western point-of-view about food. I recall the two great chefs (from Japan) who were sent home because they included something that was Asian inspired into their Final plate. The other chefs that moved on also included Asian ingredients in their food, but they moved on because it was less traditional. That is not fair in my eyes.
