gindwani's rating
this new attempt of Yash Chopra of making villains out of heroes is satisfactory. Both heroes of the movie, Shah Rukh and Sunny Deol benefited tremendously from this film that will decide their career in the future. Sunny will make more movies where he'll play heroes with intense action like in Jo Bhole So Nihaal while Shah Rukh will use a lot of stuttering in his next films. but it is the choice of the heroine that raises the question. Darr was made after the debacle of Yash's Lamhe. it it obvious that the failure of the movie is blamed upon solely on the shoulders reigning queen Sridevi,as when you are on top everyone wants you down.Instead of repeating the queen,Yash has used Juhi Chawla, who despite of being a talented actress, cannot match even a hair strand with the queen bee Sridevi.Even if Sridevi not being in the movie, the shadow of the queen still hangs around in Yash's mind as he clothes Juhi and makes her dance like Sridevi in a white sari, which Juhi fails miserably.
Since its first release in 1984,I have watched the movie again and again and yet again, and 14 years since, the movie still manages to create that thrilling impact on me.The songs with pans, flowers and sarees may be considered outdated as compared to present Hindi movies, but still can amaze you with the visual sights. Music by Bappi Lahiri still leaves you craving for more, songs sung beautifully by Kishore Kumar or Lata Mangeshkar leaves you wishing you owner of such voices never have to die or retire and sing for ever. The heart rendering background music that highlights each and every emotion cannot be found in today's movies. And of course comes the performances.Jeetendra has been acting in movies since late 60's and earned the tittle "jumping jack" in the 70's, but it is because of the such movies he played in the 80's that he will be remembered. Sridevi's performance is flawless, and it's no wonder that she was hailed as the queen of bollywood.Jeetendra and Sridevi make the best pair of the 80's. Not only Tohfa, but many other movies they played together like Himmatwala,Mawali,Maqsad were super duper hits.Jaya Pradha as a supporting actress gave a powerful performance, while Kader Khan was at its best not only in acting, but also as writer of the dialog of the movie.Shakti Kapoor, with his tag line"Auu Lalitha" gave a performance which he himself will never match. This movie as an all-time blockbuster.
