Beastars (2019)
surprisingly forgetable
Maybe my expectations of anime are scewed from mostly having watched it as an easily impressed teen but nothing about Beastars stood out to me. The tropes are pretty standard and the plot is your run of the mill humble hero's yourney. Prepare for lots of brooding, social games, teens written as adults, and excessive violence. The voice acting and dialouge are as expected overly dramatic and cryptic. Most of this is a feature of the art form in general and it's cultural context more than this specific title but for some reason i expected Beastars to be one of the exceptions that i can resonate more with (as several other Netflix anime titles) and it wasn't. The production value was definitely not _bad_ but likewise bland imo. I watched the first two seasons in two days as background entertainment while weaving though so I obviously didn't actively dislike it, the kinky undertones were a nice touch.
Vitamania: The Sense and Nonsense of Vitamins (2018)
Well paced, unpretentious and informative
I found this documentary refeshingly unbiased and unmanipulative, showing what we do and don't know about vitamins without pushing an interpretation on the viewer. I highly enjoyed the playful instances of song and colorful, but unintrusive, animations. The anectodal stories are made relevant by statistics and add an engaging dimension to facts instead of just playing on feelings to convince the audience of a pushed viewpoint. I found the whole narration very NVC and trustworthy and the information well-packaged and pedagogical.
I appreaciated this documentary enough to go and pay for it after having watched a pirated copy, and it was good enough to actually make me think about my life choices and multivitamin consumption.
