Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side (2020)
A trite addition to the crime/detective genre
Contrary to the initial buzz, Asur is a tepid series. It attempts to couple mythology with the crime genre which does pique one's curiosity in the initial episodes. Sadly, it fails to be an engaging series with archetypal, one-note characters. A reticent hacker who always wears a black hoodie, a software engineer who can hack into government database with ease (there is actually code from GeeksForGeeks in one of the episodes) and the extremely intelligent anti-social villain. The template characters go on and on.
What hits the series most hard is its writing. The formulaic nature of writing makes it so predictable that it certainly doesn't go near to the thrill and suspense that a detective/crime series should. For instance, the main characters parting because of ethical differences. It has many unwarranted plotlines. Nusrat and Nikhil's past is one of them. Naina conveniently being a cybersecurity expert because it'll be required in the story later. The teacher-prodigy dynamic between Dhananjay and Nikhil is also a motif which was used but was underdeveloped. There is a major opening left for the next season but that'd been way better if the first season was good enough.
In a nutshell, Asur felt unoriginal and banal. It wasn't able to incite intrigue and thrill. The series fired in the right direction but missed the aim horribly.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
A justifying end to over a decade long storytelling
The slow pace in the beginning can surely be overlooked considering what's in stock during the second half of the movie. Although I'm not a vehement Marvel fan, it's apposite to say this movie a befitting end to the Thanos saga. Respect to Russo brothers for being able to pull off an onerous task of concluding the tapestry MCU has created over the decade. These movies are basically an end to 21 movies. So, the payoffs were huge. I loved that Captain used Mjolnir. Thor was most ridiculous for me in both Infinity War and Endgame. The tone of the character doesn't work somehow after Ragnarok, either he's cracking joke after Thanos kills Asgardians and Loki or he's being a self-pitying alcoholic post the snap. Captain Marvel does what she was introduced to do in this universe, she pops up where it is convenient to the plot. The fact that her character had less screen time was apposite to me considering her underwhelming origin movie. The surprising character was Clint. Even though his screen time in previous movies is less, the transformation of an uber agent after losing everything to become a ruthless killer in search of solace/purpose is intriguing. Ronan kind of reminded me of John Wick. But when Clint is given hope to undo what's done by the mad titan, you can see the compassionate and kind side of him; the scene between him and Agent Romanoff is heart-warming and poignant at the same time. The humane nature explored in Clint's character made is supremely engaging. I wanted more screen time for Doctor Strange so that I can hear more about his one in fourteen million possibilities. Professor Hulk was a fun character. And Iron Man sacrificing himself was an audacious move for the writers. I was reminded of a dialogue by Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi when he says to Ray, "Let the past die.Kill it, if you have to." This movie is more rewarding to the MCU fans. It is a love letter to the original Avengers. The makers have done everything which was warranted to close this chapter spanning a decade.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Extremely boring
After a puissant story like Black Panther and exuberantly received fan-service viz Infinity War, Marvel has given a story that is somewhere between insipid to tenuous with formulaic comedy which is extremely boring. A life threatening, serious situation and all of a sudden there's comedy. It's expected and not funny anymore. Marvel uses this in almost all the movies now from Thor: Ragnarok to Infinity War. Even if the lack of a strong villain could have been ignored, the movie lacks the connect to make you feel like Captain Marvel has outgrown personal adversities fighting her inner demons. The movie is incomparable to Wonder Woman, which had a fair share of it's problem (viz the villain, an emotional ending which felt imposed), while Captain Marvel itself is a problem. The story has a bizarre flow, lacks engaging dialogues, a worthy villain to overcome and doesn't even have entertainment (not even at the expense of the story).
People who found Justice League to be underwhelming should take Captain Marvel as a challenge.
Doom Patrol: Pilot (2019)
An apposite start for a relatively unkown comic book characters
Doom Patrol is off to a great start with eccentric characters imbued with stellar performances. The plot of misfits coming together (reminded me of Guardians of the Galaxy) isn't atypical but the way it is executed - for lack of better words- is absurdly unique. Mr. Nobody narrating the story was a major drawback. Everything else is as deft as it could be.
Tu Hai Mera Sunday (2016)
A thought provoking movie
Tu Hain Mera Sunday is a movie with a lot of thought put into it. I was in awe of how Sunday was a metaphor for something essential and blissful which we miss out on being busy with life. Sunday is contrast of everything a banal Monday brings in a routine life. A must watch!
Iron Fist (2017)
Not worth a watch
Season 2 is less worse(only in terms of fight scenes) that the first season but it
Ridiculous things in season 2 :
-> "I want my stern parent's approval by any means" cliche by Davos.
-> Collen teaching the Iron Fist (who learned kung fu from the monks in Kun Lun all his life) how to fight.
-> Ward Meachum's redemption arc was warranted.
-> Davos training kids to cleanse to the city with a his newfound precipitous messiah complex. Can't the makers make something original?
Iron Fist only worked in his momentary scenes in Defenders and Luke Cage.
Sanju (2018)
A tepid movie because expectations are higher from Mr.Hirani
Sanju isn't an objective story but just another biopic. Rajukumar Hirani, being the phenomenal raconteur he is, has done a great job in storytelling but there isn't anything remarkable in the movie which is expected from him. Ranbir and the prosthetic department were awesome. I'd rank this lowest among all the movies by Mr.Hirani.
Luke Cage (2016)
Luke Cage Season2 - Good but not good enough
Luke Cage Season2 manages to handle multiple storylines gracefully but burdened with interminable 13 episodes with the first half trying to foist the idea of Heroes for Hire with some unconvincingly shifting alliances.Someone who liked season 1 will probably like this one too. The only fun episodes were the last four where plot seemed pacy in comparison to the preceding ones. The best episode was the one where Iron Fist shows up whose prime motive was to appease fans.
Satyameva Jayate (2018)
A gory and trite revenge story
A banal revenge story of an anti-hero with messiah complex who feels cathartic in grotesque act of burning corrupt police officers alive but somehow is mawkish when he finds stray dogs in pain. Most proverbial dialogues are cringe worthy. And the story itself is a hackneyed and predictable one. John Abraham, who is a painter by day and vigilante by night, doesn't give up a chance of displaying his prime physique. The only convincing performance is by Manoj Bajpai (an uber cop) and Manish Choudhary.
