Taiwan's 'Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival' featured this film in 2019, but I didn't see it until recently on the CinemaWorld channel. I was deeply impressed and feel it deserves full praise. The film skillfully weaves political, social, and cultural issues with the complex relationship between husband and wife. The writing, direction, and acting are all outstanding. I was especially moved by the scene in which the little boy, about to be forced to donate his liver, changes the husband's perspective on life and even love. The act of forgiving and forgetting can be challenging but it can only be achieved when one truly feels for others' struggles and difficulties.
I watched it on the CinemaWorld channel. If this movie had been produced in the US or by some Hollywood directors, it would likely have been turned into a cheap thriller. I was so glad to see that the director and writer, Austeja Urbaite, transformed it into a work of great depth. The film provides an equal opportunity to explore the desires and struggles of the characters, including the adoptive parents, the young nanny, and the siblings given up for adoption. This is what makes the film so unique and intimate. Additionally, each actor and actress brings their role to life in a fitting and nuanced way, which I deeply appreciate.
