Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Best superhero movie in years
I am a huge Marvel fan. I see every movie they put out, in theaters, regardless if it looks great or not. I like DC too but not to the same extent. I admit though, most Marvel movies I never think about again once I've left. Not this one
This film has a bit of everything. There is not a single dull moment. There are some great (albeit predictable) twists, some tear-jerker moments, amazing animation, amazing action, and overall this is just a GREAT film. The who thing was just absolute fun. The new looks of the old villians was great too, I especially liked scorpion.
The bit with Stan Lee was especially sad. What a great way to honor him though.
Oh, and stay after the credits for probably the funniest scene of all
Oh and the Gwen Stacy outfit is so cool!
Hunter Killer (2018)
A fun thriller
I think a lot of people went in to this expecting a more realistic approach. I want to make one thing clear - you have to suspend belief a lot for this movie. It has many unbelievable scenes and scenarios but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie what it is. I had fun and that's all i ask from a movie like this
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
Worth the Price of Admission
It's fairly hard to review this movie without giving away too much, and I think it's worth seeing so I'll focus on the basic.
Cinematography is very very nice. A lot of the shots are just beautiful; I especially like the rain and contrast with the bright hotel.
All the characters were very well done, with Flynn (Bridges), Miles (Pullman), and Darlene (Erivo) being the standouts.
The pacing is great, after the first "twist" happens it really picks up pace and really doesn't seem like a 2+ hour movie.
Critiques are the ending falling flat a little, wanting to see more of John Hamm, and a few plot lines that seem to fizzle out without much spark.
Venom (2018)
Judge for yourself
After seeing the numerous negative reviews from professional critics, I decided I wouldn't even bother checking this out. Luckily, user reviews on sites like Reddit changed my mind.
While Venom is far from a masterpiece, and feels downright silly at times, I found it really entertaining. Tom Hardy was by far the highlight - his Venom/Brock scenes completely stole the show. Unfortunatrly, the same cannot be said about the supporting cast, as the villain and love interest are as cookie-cutter as it gets.
Another highlight was the Venom suit itself. The CGI was great for the vast majority and when Venom was on the screen (and Riot for that matter) I felt excited just to watch him.
The other negatives, such as rather poor fight scenes, atrocious editing (leaving many unanswered questions), and the first half being a bit boring, don't ruin the fun and I recommend checking this one out yourself.
Hell Fest (2018)
Not bad but nothing special
Any time you make a slasher movie, i think it's important to have the audience root for the potential victims. Unfortunately, they are so damn unlikeable in this film that was cheering the villian. The girl with the short blonde hair especially - probably one of the most annoying characters I've ever seen.
The set up is good. There's some nice cinematography and the festival itself looks great but after about 45 minutes of the same old stuff it starts to get stale.
There is not much tension here. There's very few scares. The villain seems to be supernatural but it's not really said (no back story for any of the characters is given).
The ending is especially bad. It's about as cliche as it gets and potentially sets up a sequel. Not something I'll be seeing if there is one.
Eighth Grade (2018)
A Huge Letdown
The main problem with this movie is that the main character is just incredibly unlikable. She's very awkward (intentionally I'm sure) and she comes across as someone you wouldn't want to be around, let alone be friends with. None of the other characters are enjoyable either, especially the male crush she has (dude who flexes and tries to get her topless). I get that sex happens in those years, I had sex as an 8th grader, but it wasn't ANYWHERE near as stupid and awkward as they made it out to be.
There just wasn't much happening here. Combined with the annoying characters and questionable view of 8th grade, I can't recommend this at all
Hell House LLC II: The Abaddon Hotel (2018)
Extremely disappointing
If you've ever seen the (pretty awful) sequel to Grave Encounters, you know what you're getting with this. There's a bunch of people we don't care about trapped in a hotel and some evil entity is after them. Door handles disappear, figures in the shadows, etc etc.
Whereas the first hell house was a masterpiece in creating an environment and letting the unseen do the scaring, this movie leaves all that and just shows us everything right away. There's no real tension, made worse by the incredibly bad acting. The bloodied up girl, the female talk show host, and the dude who talked to spirits (?) were the worst.
I was really looking forward to this after the first one and this seems like it was made by different filmmakers based on how poorly made it was. Do yourself a favor; watch the first one and avoid this
Mandy (2018)
Save your time and money
This is a horrible and ridiculous movie. It has no coherent story line, is dark and grim, has horrible acting, is not exciting or tense, and basically is a worthless movie
The Executioners (2018)
Not a good film
I was intrigued by the plot summary and was kind of excited to watch this. I'm a big fan of horror movies taking place in mainly one location, so this seemed right up my alley.
It starts off...okay. The acting leaves A LOT to be desired but it sets the stage decently. That's when things go downhill. Fast. The "villains" are comically stupid. They are constantly getting tricked by stupid ploys, they can't seem to handle 3 tied up women, and they look ridiculous. My favorite part was when one of them had a gun to a girl's head and was thwarted by another girl hitting him in the ankle.
There are also some major continuity issues and unintentionally comedic scenarios. Avoid this.
