The Acolyte (2024)
more substandard Star Wars
Well Disney have done it, they've beat the life out of Star Wars and flogged it to death. Andor was a recent SW highlight, and Mandalorian started well before it went off the rails and became boring, similar to Obi Wan Kenobi, Book of Boba Fett and Ashoka, this is more of the same substandard mediocre at best "content" designed to fill a schedule slot and please the shareholders and nothing more.
There is nothing for the fans, rubbish wooden acting, nothing of interest, uneven pacing and a lame script and plot, yawn more lightsabers again. It didn't capture my attention at all. Disney need to learn that less is more. I lost interest and won't be watching any more episodes, I just can't be bothered with SW any more.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
Very disappointing
I didn't really have any interest in a Furiosa back story but LOVED Fury Road so went to see it anyway. Overall it was just OK, but not anywhere remotely close to being as good as Fury Road. There are a ton of plot conveniences, key characters escape and no-one bats an eyelid or says anything, people don't recognise easily recognisable characters because it suits the plot. Some of the plot holes were a mile wide.
Anna Taylor-Joy does her best in the role, but isn't a convincing protagonist and the backstory doesn't warrant the making of a film, its really not an interesting story.
The entire film looks like it was shot in front of a green screen and in a backlot somewhere, precious little looks like it was filmed on location, it has none of the gritty realism and practical effects that FR had, and has a lot of obvious CGI which pulls you out of the action.
The "soundtrack" is also not a patch on FR, its mostly just noise.
The world-building is good and the film just about managed to keep my attention for the runtime, although it is overly long. I went back to see FR in the cinema multiple times but don't have any interest in watching this again.
Fallout (2024)
Thumbs up from me
This series is Breaking Bad levels of awesome, it has some nice nods to the games, excellent humour, great use of bullet time that doesn't become an overused gimmick, and a phenomenal plot that twists and turns, and fits in really well with the games.
The sound, CGI, costumes, set design and music are all impeccable and really bring the Fallout world from the games to life. It was SO much better than I expected it to be.
The storyline is unpredictable, quirky and funny, and builds to an epic finale.
I cannot wait for Season 2 and will definitely watch this through a second time. Really highly recommended.
Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver (2024)
pplleeaassee mmaaakkee iiiittttt ssstttooopppp
This film, like the one before it, takes slo-mo to ridiculous excess. It is not needed and becomes a total chore to sit through. It seems to have become Zack Snyders one-trick-pony and is really overused.
If that isn't enough the first half of the movie moves at such a glacial pace nothing of any interest happens. The actors are all mediocre to bad and I didn't develop any affinity to any of them or care about any of the characters at all.
Many of the plot elements make no sense at all, people have primative farming tools and advanced weapons, it's just badly thought out nonsense. Apparently this franchise was handed around and even supposed to be a Star Wars spin-off, its clear to see why nobody wanted it and I'm surprised Netflix hasn't cancelled it already.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Disappointing
I've watched some trash in my time, but this is amongst the worst. Compared to the excellent Godzilla Minus One this really is an insult to anyones intelligence. I wasn't expecting much, CGI fighting CGI was the premise and that's what I was expecting but even that was plodding and boring. The bits in-between with the humans was just terrible. Terrible acting, terrible exposition, I just had enough of it by about half way through. The most the critics could say about this film was that it was "fun", but I didn't find much fun in it. The jokes didn't land and the CGI didn't have any of the excitement or impact I expected.
Argylle (2024)
Contender for Worst Film of the Year
I was expecting it to be bad, but it was worse than I expected. I thought it started off quite well, but it got progressively worse and worse as the film went on. Dua Lipa, Henry Cavill and John Cena were a bait-and-switch and hardly in the film at all, especially Dua Lipa who gets a couple of minutes screen time. The film is chock full of obvious CGI and green screen. The action is boring, it has the cliche "uploading" progress bar that moves at a glacial pace, you would think they are uploading gigabytes of data and not a single file, it just does not work any more and is so passe. Bryce Dallas Howard seems completely out of her depth as an action star, but plays the author role well enough. A serious contender for Worst Film of The Year.
The Underdoggs (2024)
Serious contender for the worst film I have ever seen
I really gave it a chance, but couldn't make it all the way through the film it was so bad and cringy.
Every other word is swearing, there is excess and then there is this movie. You could probably halve the script by taking the swearing out. Whats left of the script is not much better. Its the story you've all seen before, the same misfits heroic journey like Mighty Ducks but much, much, worse. Snoop Dogg should stick to music, he cannot act to save his life.
There will probably be a bunch of tweens who think the swearing is really edgy and funny, but Snoop Dogg is almost of pension age and it just doesn't work. It just gets really old and really stale really fast, its not clever that every sentence is peppered with profanities.
Reacher (2022)
S1 Awesome.... S2 not so much
I really enjoyed the first series, Reacher was a likeable character, the plot was interesting and his companions interacted well with him and made the whole series really compelling to watch. The small town setting worked really well and made for an interesting story.
Unfortunately something catastrophic has happened to season 2, maybe a change of Director or scriptwriter. Reacher is now a loose cannon, the answer to everything is to shoot it or punch it, and law enforcement doesn't care about all the body count and mass trail of carnage wherever he goes. His sidekicks aren't interesting characters and have plot armor, the baddies are caricatures and the story is corny and doesn't work at all.
I couldn't wait for each new episode in S1, now I struggle to watch each episode. I really hope they go back to the original format in Season 3 with more detective work and less smashing everything up.
Chlopi (2023)
One of the best films of the year
I wasn't expecting the film to be as incredible as it was, it is similar to Across The Spiderverse in that it is unique and really inventive in its presentation. Even with digital intermediates it must have taken a phenomenal amount of manual effort to create. Each frame of the movie is incredible, the oil painting over the top of the live acting really worked fantastically well and the acting, singing, and visuals all combined perfectly to create a captivating and interesting story. The acting is well done and the story has some nice twists and turns to keep it interesting from start to finish.
The Creator (2023)
Really accomplished filmmaking
I would rate the film a 9, I saw it in the Odeon "Screen Unseen" tonight and loved it. I was engrossed from start to finish, it has some neat twists and turns, and outstanding CGI and world-building, and some of the best use of Dolby Atmos surround sound that I've ever heard, it all adds to the immersion and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It is one of my favourite films of the year, up there with Oppenheimer for exceptional film-making, I wouldn't quite call it a masterpiece, but would say its close. I can't really say anything negative about it, the acting, pacing, plot, effects and sound were all spot on.
See it in a Dolby Cinema if you can, the overhead Atmos effects are superb!
Barbie (2023)
Overhyped and banal
The film does not live up to the marketing. Its about as subtle as a steamroller and deep as a puddle. There must be primary school books with more depth and nuance than this film.
The music is good and the plot moves along at pace but its like it was written by an angsty tween. "Yay feminism" is about as deep as the message gets and its pretty much the entire purpose and plot of the film. It doesn't offer up anything to think about, just a bubblegum world that is just a carbon copy of the toys.
With all the "Barbenhiemer" hype and marketing I expected more from the movie, Oppenheimer and Barbie are about as polar opposites of film-making as its possible to get.
Le visiteur du futur (2022)
thoroughly enjoyable
This film had me hooked right from its very funny start. I would say its a better multiverse film than anything that Marvel have done, at a lower expense obviously.
For a relatively low-budget film the plot is extremely well paced and scripted, the costumes, sets, CGI and effects are really well done and the humour throughout is spot on. Some of the jokes are brilliant. It covers familiar themes but in a funny and entertaining way.
All time travel films create paradoxes and this one is no different, but is self-aware and good fun to watch.
The actors seem like they're having fun making the film and I enjoyed it so much I want to find more films in a similar style or by the same filmmakers.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Complete garbage
I just stopped watching after about 30 minutes or so. The film was so tragically corny and unfunny I had no interest to continue watching.
Its a shame the mighty Thor is reduced to a ridiculous hammy parody. The story was all over the place, the humour didn't land once with me and I am so glad I didn't waste any money watching this rubbish in the cinema.
It started OK with a good premise but then the tone and pace was all over the place and I just lost all interest in the film.
Disney is destroying whats left of the MCU piece by piece after Endgame. Maybe its time for them to stop and do something new, but I doubt they will stop.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger (2022)
is this the Book of Boba Fett or The Mandalorian???
This show is supposed to be about Boba Fett, he seems to have been sidelined and forgotten about in his own show. The last two episodes should have been Mando series 3, not Book of Boba Fett.
Silent Night (2021)
very preachy
I do like some dark humour, but didn't find any of it funny in this film.
It's insufferably preachy and woke, probably written by a media studies student. To its credit the cast do the best with the script, and the spin on the common Christmas family friction cliche has an original twist.
If you're looking for some good dark comedy, Riders of Justice is far, far, better than this in every way.
Foundation (2021)
Fantastic, give it a chance
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, it has got better and better with every episode as the plot and the characters have developed. I haven't read the books, so that seems to be a positive based on the negative comments.
I am really liking it for what it is, a well produced sci-fi show with lots of depth and some nice twists and turns. For the second half of the series I have eagerly been awaiting every Friday to see what will come next. The production values for this show are top notch, rivalling any Hollywood blockbuster.
I would say give this show a watch and stick with it to the end of the series, it seems some people have had early negative reactions because it didn't closely follow the book. I can't wait for Season 2.
SAS: Red Notice (2021)
terrible
Even for a low budget film it is bad. The plot is full of holes and it is boring for an action film. Its as much Mills and Boon as Andy McNab, and more Keystone Cops than SAS. Avoid.
