The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
An excellent cinematography that lacks poetry
A film that doesn't even deserve an Oscar nomination. Way too much praise for a cinematic achievement that says almost nothing interesting.
The only really successful part is the cinematography, it's excellent. The acting is good, sometimes theatrical, forced, mostly everything feels unnatural. The script is full of gaps, you don't understand who comes from where, what their past is. Some dialogues have interpersonal relevance, they say something about friendship, about bad attachments and about the relational falsity between people.
It is a strange film that does not deserve its praise. It's worth seeing once for the cinematography and that's it. A forced film that definitely does not say anything special. Too technical, lacking the essence of cinema. Mediocre to boring.
Akiresu to kame (2008)
A film about art and artist, slightly exaggerated black humor - the Kitano perspective
From the perspective of an artist: This film is mostly a waste of time, forced script, cliché, black humor taken to the extreme, and sometimes even boring. I understand Kitano's desire and perspective on modern art in general, but the main character in this film is like a psychopath, without emotions, and his wife is the complete opposite, devoted to the extreme, sick, both are sick.
I don't like to write negatively about Kitano because he is one of my favourite, a special filmmaker, I love A scene at the sea, a very special film, but I have to be honest.
This film seems more experimental, hurried and even subjective, especially towards art and what art means, the relationship between the artist and his work. The cinematography is superb and the actors play very well, humor of grade 10, but the film as a whole is disappointing.
There are many truths about the art that Kitano has sharply observed and I agree with him, but I honestly didn't like the way he expressed them cinematically.
I don't recommend this movie except for Kitano fans, otherwise not really. The film suffers a lot on the psychological part of the characters, meaning it is almost non-existent. Honestly, I didn't expect a Kitano movie to be so weak, the script is quite poor.
There are some scenes and dialogues that I liked a lot, I have to admit, but overall it's weak.
Holy Father (2020)
Each on his own path in life
Beautiful pictures of Mount Athos, that's about it. Otherwise, everything is too intimate, too forced questions, even stupid, he is either naive in reality or naive for the sake of the movie. I don't get it.
The director was the person with the temptation like the devil in the wilderness, a kind of devil's advocate. He tried to awaken in his father a person who is no longer relevant to the life of a monk, again, a little unkind.
The father gave him wise and sufficient answers, it is clear that he has the spirit of prayer. To be glad that he has a father who lives with the saints! It's a great thing to have someone in the family as a monk.
It is a film edited in a subjective way and It makes you understand that the father is the culprit in this whole movie, at least that's what he wants to achieve in a way.
In the end it seems that everything was forced for the sake of the movie. Once again, some scenes from Mount Athos are very beautiful.
However, I think that the frame with his semi nude's wife pose and their child at the end was not necessary, again, too forced and too intimate.
Âya to majo (2020)
A simple story but full of fun
The CGI looks good, quite pleasant, chromatic, especially the sky in the background is directly reminiscent of ghibli animations. At the beggining feels a little strange but I can say that they balanced as well as they could, for me it is a success. The characters are very interesting, quite well defined. The characters are unique, some events are strange, but quite interesting, totally unexpected, they have their own uniqueness.
Overall a very pleasant animation both chromatically and visually. As long as you don't have very high expectations, you will enjoy it a lot. It can be seen that it is intended more for children, but full of charm, great for family. The story demands more, because you feel like something is lacking, but to look at the end credit, is a kind of epilogue, it is necessary, it contributes to the story! A very visually pleasing animation that as a whole gives you a good mood and very funny, so if you want to laugh, I higly recommend it!
The only negative aspect of the movie is that sometimes it really feels like a consistent introduction to a future TV series and if that is the main idea of Goro Miyazaki then the mission was accomplished.
Honestly, I liked it! I felt like watching the movie again, so it says something ... It's not a Ghibli masterpiece, but something good is definitely.
I watched the dubbed version in English and it sounds very good.
Malmkrog (2020)
Cristi Puiu's best movie so far
I start by saying that it is indeed a long and pretentious film with the audience, which requires patience and attention.
I can say that in the first half hour of the movie is the big test of patience for what follows, but patience that deserves every minute. Malmkrog is a cinematic success with a special experimental air vibe underneath a classic presentation of great visual value. The only negative point, if I may call it negative, is that it is not for everyone, not for any level of thinking, therefore not for any age, there is a good chance that you will not understand some of the discussions in the dialogue if you are too young.
The essence of Cristi Puiu's films lies in the dialogue and interaction between the characters in relation to the environment. The atmosphere in the film is unique and captivating.
if you are not interested in topics such as religion, Christianity and history, chances are you will find it boring. But if you are passionate, prepare to enter into a dizzying dialogue about God, truth, subjectivity, objectivity.
The film touches on themes relevant to the world we live in and to which we are heading. It's that kind of movie that's good to see several times.
For lovers of the art of cinema, it deserves all the patience and all the attention.
Excellent cinematography, superb editing and the actors play great.
A cinematic creation that begins in a special way and ends in equal measure.
Malmkrog will surprise you in a way like human nature.
I think this is his best movie creation so far!
