John Wick (2014)
Well what'a you know...
Look, I go to the movies A LOT!!! I usually go a few times a month and I usually go by myself. We all have our own ways of relaxing and going to the flicks is mine. I've seen them all (most more than once). The way I look at it is, you have to see the bad ones to appreciated the good ones!!! I've not only walked out of the theater MANY times disappointed, but heck, I've WALKED IN many times "expecting" to be disappointed. I honestly bought my "John Wick" ticket expecting it to be a, at best, so so flick. I can't tell you how refreshing it was to be wrong. Look, I won't lie, the story is about as basic as they come, but this movie makes it work. The action is as about as CRISP as I've ever seen. The constant action, the music, the well chosen actors, along with Reeve's ever, "less is more" presence grabs you nicely and keeps you entertained. Look, don't waste your time if your looking for academy worthy material... but if your looking for a solid action flick that will keep you entertained for a few hours... this movie is definitely for you!
I, Frankenstein (2014)
Accept it for what it is...
Let's talk plainly here... A poodle could of seen this trailer and automatically knew this wasn't going to be Hollywood masterpiece. If you saw the trailer and then still bought a ticket, then you don't have anything to complain about if you hated this film. This movie is about Gargoyles, Demons and Frankenstein!!! I doubt the best movie minds of all time could of turned this plot into a well made movie. It's SCIENCE FICTION people, not every film can get an 8.0 on IMDb.
With all that being said, I have to honestly say that I enjoyed this movie. Maybe I enjoyed it because I didn't go into it with high expectations. Yes, the plot was OOOVEEERLY simple, but it did have pretty good special effects and there was plenty of action sequences. Also, I'm a fan of Eckhart, Nighy and Jai Courtney. I would love to go into detail and use all type of specific film lingo to review this movie, but I would be wasting your time. If you want to escape reality for an hour or two and your a true sci-fi fan, I recommend this flick. If your looking for a movie with Oscar potential, you should sit this one out.
Spartacus: Victory (2013)
All hale SPARTACUS!!!!!
Never have I been so emotionally engulfed by ANYTHING... EVER... on television. What makes it even more remarkable is that we all new how the story would end. We all know the story... It's historical fact. Most of us saw the movie with Kurt Douglas. YET... STILL... I stand in AW of how it played out. The acting, the fight scenes, the wardrobes, etc... perfection. This perfection was at its finest with the story line of GANICUS. When his story reached it's conclusion, I found myself OVERWHELMED with emotion. BRAVO Spartacus!!! The actors, the writers, the directors... the entire crew... As far as I am concerned, you have set a very new (and high) standard in the television game.
For Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada (2012)
This film was a pleasant surprise...
Truth is, I put off watching this movie for a long time. I'm not exactly sure why, but even though I love Andy Garcia, I just wasn't that impressed with the trailer. Well, I just finished watching it and let me tell you it's a great movie!!! Even in bad movies, Andy Garcia is impressive, but the surprise in this film was Oscar Issac! He was superb.
This film reminded me a tad bit of "Glory". It had an all star cast and a story line that kept you interested, gave you one or two surprises and was full of sincere moments. Even though I would of liked to see a little more action, the action it delivered was sufficient. The sets and costumes were right on, they did a good job of bringing you into that time period. I would of never of known anything about the Cristeros War and it's heroes if not for this movie. Overall it's an excellent film that everyone should see.
