Dolce India: Eat, Pray... (2014)
Road trip
Eat, Pray... is the eighth episode of season one of Dolce India, and here Italian-Canadian David Rocco really goes into a remote area and explores the spiritual side of food, whilst helping out in a village and engaging in a whisky drinking interlude. Anyway, it's good to see Rocco away from the hustle-and-bustle of Mumbai, and it was the resilient Rocco who managed to wait hours upon hours for the bus to take him to his destination. Anyway, I look forward to seeing the rest of season one. I'd like for Rocco to visit the north-eastern states of India as I don't think many celebrity chefs go there.
Bake Off: Crème de la Crème: Episode #8.6 (2023)
Week six
So here we are in week six, where there are four teams remaining from the second group, and they are fighting for the remaining three spots in the group of six (which also comprises the three teams from the group of one) in week seven. So who are the four teams.
Caroline and Martin, Bisous Bisous, Manchester.
Chantelle and Kasia, Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire.
Mauro and Daniel, The Landmark London. At 59 years old, Daniel is the season's oldest contestant.
Mustapha and Tracy, Mustapha is from Birmingham, and he exited in the first round of 2018.
Mauro and Daniel came first in this episode. They are on a roll.
Caroline and Martin came second. They are also on a roll.
Chantelle and Kasia came third.
Mustapha and Tracy unfortunately were eliminated.
Dolce India: Chef's Challenge (2014)
Masterchef
Chef's Challenge is the seventh episode of season one of Dolce India, and I really liked this episode as we see Italian-Canadian David Rocco squaring off against ITC Maratha's Executive Chef Rajdeep Kapoor, but before the challenge, Chef Rajdeep shows Rocco around the streets of Mumbai to sample the street food. Anyway, one of the challenges took place on a cooking program featuring a burly chef who is very famous in India. The final challenge took place in front of food bloggers and influencers and all. Anyway, Chef's Challenge is very entertaining and I look forward to seeing the rest of series one.
Dolce India: Mumbai Italiano! (2014)
Rocco feels at home
In Mumbai Italiano!, Italian-Canadian David Rocco catches up with a fellow Italian who is part of the Italian expatriate community in Mumbai, and he introduces Rocco to vada pav on the beach. Here I like how Rocco explores the heart and soul of Indian cuisine in the villages, and also eating at home with one of them and making the most of the cozy kitchen as they do a sing-a-long after a hearty Italian meal that has fusion with Indian flavors and all. Anyway, I was hoping Rocco would catch up with the Canadian expatriate community in Mumbai, but maybe that's for another episode to come hopefully.
Dolce India: Elephant King (2014)
Elephant polo
Elephant King is the fifth episode of the first season of Dolce India, and I like how Rocco takes on elephant polo, and it's a lot of fun seeing him being so competitive. Anyway, I discovered Dolce India only recently, and all credit to him for helping out the locals and also learning the local cuisine, and bridging the Italian and Indian gap. Believe it or not, at this time this episode was filmed, Sonia Gandhi, an Italian-American, was the De facto Prime Minister of India, so I was hoping Rocco would drop by and say hello to his compatriot, but I think she would have been busy with the 2014 general election.
Dolce India: The Warrior Chef (2014)
Rocco and the Royals
The Warrior Chef is the fourth episode of the first season of Dolce India, and I'm really getting into this fine series, and Rocco, who is Italian-Canadian (I thought he was Italian-American because of his accent), mixes with the locals and he actually resides in a village house, and whilst the cameras catch him pulling up the blanket (it's cold) and waking up, you don't actually see him sleeping on the bed. Anyway, here Rocco explores the warrior side if cuisine. Rocco is a busy man because he is also the executive producer and the producer of this series, so that's a lot of creative responsibility.
Dolce India: Holi Gurudwara (2014)
Rocco does Delhi
Holi Gurudwara is the third episode of Dolce India, a series from Italian-Canadian David Rocco that I discovered only recently. I'm really getting into this series, and I like how Rocco gets into the heart of the cuisine of India. Here he visits the very famous Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in New Delhi, the capital city of India, and he helps out as well. Anyway, I was really hoping that Rocco, being Italian-Canadian, would have been afforded the opportunity to visit the then De facto Prime Minister of India, Sonia Gandhi, who is Italian-India, and cook up a treat for her as she governed India in the lead-up to the 2014 election.
Dolce India: Weekend in Mumbai (2014)
Mumbai and Tendulkar
So this episode, Weekend in Mumbai, is the second episode of Dolce India, and Italian-Canadian David Rocco, explores the heart of Mumbai, and he's taken aback by the indiscriminate car honking big time. Anyway, it's a shame that whilst Rocco was in Mumbai he didn't visit the Nirmal Mall in Mulund, in suburban Mumbai, and investigate why the restaurant of legendary cricket player Sachin Tendulkar was there for only two or so years before being shut down I think in 2005, and to this day the Mall management hasn't provided a clear explanation of why Mulund was deprived of the culinary delights of Tendulkar's restaurant.
Rocco also makes a meal in Bandra for I think a Bollywood star, because many Bollywood stars live in Bandra, which is why property prices there are high.
Rocco also dines at Britannia & Co.
Dolce India: Indian Vino (2014)
A rough, realistic intro to Dolce India
I don't know if this was Italian-Canadian David Rocco's first visit to India or to Mumbai, but he struggled to drive to the Fratelli Vineyards, with his car breaking down twice in the middle of nowhere, and with the locals not understanding his Canadian-English skills. Rocco was quite critical of the driving etiquette of the local population, but he ignores the fact that there is so much speeding in Canada, with helicopters equipped to catch speeding drivers. I was hoping that Rocco would drop by and visit one of the most famous Italian-Indians in the world, Sonia Gandhi, who was the De facto Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, but maybe she was too busy with the 2014 election campaign. Anyway, Rocco breathes a sigh of relief when he makes it to the Fratelli vineyards. Later on he visits the ITC Grand Central Hotel, but we don't see him walking through the metal detector that's common around all Mumbai hotels and shopping centers and elsewhere in India.
Dolce India: Chinese Calcutta (2016)
Rocco continues his journey
So here in Chinese Calcutta, which is episode 10 of Dolce India, we have Italian-Canadian David Rocco head to Chinese quarter of Calcutta, and explore the very influential impact that the many-generations of the Indians of Chinese origin have had on the cuisine of Calcutta. I'm not sure why Rocco seems rather bemused or uncertain how there could be so many generations of Indians of Chinese origin there are. Anyway, it's like the Canadians who are fifth generation Italians, which Rocco just must be aware of, but I don't know. Anyway, still a decent episode and I look forward to seeing the rest of season two.
Queens of Mystery (2019)
Quirky Queens of Mystery
Olivia Vinall as Matilda Stone kind of gives an Ameliesque feel and tone to Queens of Mystery, and I must say from the very start that I have never seen the acclaimed series Pushing Daisies, so honestly I cannot enter the debate on whether Queens of Mystery has a Pushing Daisieseque feel to it, so I do have to kind of review Queens of Mystery on the merits of what I've seen so far pretty much in season one. There is a charm to this series, and whilst it's not for everyone, it's a break from the nordic or dark gritty crime or line of duty series that seems to be the template for a night in init.
Queens of Mystery: Smoke & Mirrors: First Chapter (2019)
Stage fright
I'm enjoying finally catching up on Queens of Mystery, and this episode, Smoke and Mirrors: First Chapter, sees the penultimate appearance of Olivia Vinall as Matilda Stone, as she wasn't able to appear in season two due to scheduling conflicts which is unfortunate, because she pretty much owned the role of Matilda Stone. Anyway, here much of the action is in rehearsals for a stage play, and there's so much intrigue and the last thing I expected was there to be two people passing away. Anyway, the theatrical scenes were quite hilarious nonetheless, and I look forward to seeing the final chapter.
Marcus Wareing Simply Provence: Beef (2024)
Where's the beef
I'm enjoying watching Marcus Wareing Simply Provence, although I wonder if this series was supposed to be titled Marcus Wareing's Simple Provence, but still. Anyway, here this episode is all about Beef, and I'm surprised Wareing didn't challenge the Provence locals to come up with a Sunday roast to beat the English Sunday roast that England is very famous for, along with the Full English Breakfast of course init. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more episodes from Marcus Wareing Simply Provence, and also seeing the rival that kind of still exists even though England is no longer part of the EU.
Nadiya's Fast Flavours: Quick and Easy (2021)
Episode two
So here we are with Quick and Easy, the second episode of Nadiya's Easy Flavors, and here Nadiya works on a southern classic, a po-boy sandwich. Anyway, I think this is Nadiya's first series post-pandemic, and things lights up the world and brings much joy when the world seems to be running amok and all. For me, I'm not sure if I can even come close to replicating the home recipes of Nadiya, but still, just watching Nadiya and her cooking shows is the tonic we need. The sweet and sour stir-fried prawns with wok-fried noodles is yummy, and whilst Nadiya acknowledges one can get it from a takeaway and all, it's worthwhile preparing it at home. Fozia Ismail makes a guest appearance.
Bake Off: Crème de la Crème: Episode #8.5 (2023)
Week five
So here we are in week five, and it appears the missing sixth team in the second group of six won't be making an appearance after all. So that leaves five teams fighting it out for four spots in week six. So who are the five teams.
Naira and Andrea, from Brazil, and met through social media and have a strong Christian faith.
Mauro and Daniel came first in this episode, and they're on a roll. Caroline and Martin's team second, and Chantelle and Kasia came third. So like in the the previous episode we're down again to Mustapha and Tracy, and Naira and Andrea.
Sadly it was Naira and Andrea who got eliminated.
The 1% Club: Episode #3.10 (2024)
Featuring a famous contestant
One of the contestants on this episode, Steven Wong, had a fascinating backstory without a doubt. He explained to host Lee Mack that when he was around 10 years old, he and Ke Huy Quan were the the final two actors up for the role of Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Sadly and rather devastatingly, we saw in the end credits a tribute 'In memory of Steven Wong. 1972-2024.' That was very devastating, but thankfully Steven got to tell his fascinating story. Also, Mitul won the jackpot with a question where the answer made up a palindrome, as like A man, a plan, Panama. Well done to Mitul.
The Machinist (2004)
Machinations
Christian Bale should have won an Academy Award for his lead role in The Machinist, because instead of bulking up for the part, he lost an incredible amount of weight, and he looked so emaciated without a doubt. Anyway, I saw The Machinist on DVD awhile ago, and I also liked the fact that Michael Ironside had a supporting, yet critical role. It's hard to imagine someone not being able to sleep, but certainly this movie draws upon themes of consciousness that really would keep you awake at night and during the day. Anyway, could there be a sequel to this, well perhaps or maybe a reboot for modern times.
The Hitchhiker: Homebodies (1987)
Home Alone
The fact that this episode of The Hitchhiker, Homebodies, has four user reviews says a lot about the quality of this episode, from a series that I discovered only recently, and funnily enough I've forgotten how I discovered it through the internet init. Anyway, I managed to watch Homebodies on digital media, and the ending is certainly quite the twist, and it has the Twilight Zonesque feel to it, and certainly Rod Serling would have been very proud of this. Anyway, I never expected the ending, and as some of the reviewers say, this is by far one of the most suspenseful episodes of The Hitchhiker.
The Hitchhiker: Tourist Trap (1990)
We'll always have Paris
I'm enjoying watching various episodes of The Hitchhiker, which I discovered only recently. Anyway. One thing I like about The Hitchhiker is that some episodes are filmed in Paris, and here in Tourist Trap this episode was filmed in Paris, and it also guest stars heartthrob Robby Benson, who later on directed several episodes of Friends. Anyway, the ending is quite a twist, and I never quite saw it coming. Anyway, this episode, Tourist Trap came from season six, which was the final season. Season six was a bit uneven, but Tourist Trap stands out by virtue of being filmed in Paris so that counts.
The Hitchhiker: Minuteman (1987)
Born to be wild
Minuteman isn't what it starts out to seem, and you realize that the Groundhog Day theme is the structure of this episode, a few years before Groundhog Day was released of course. Anyway, also there's an element of born to be wild in this episode, and John Shea manages to display his diverse acting chops. I wonder which real-life diner was used for the interior and exterior diner scenes. Anyway, Minuteman is one of the more upbeat episodes of The Hitchhiker, and definitely worth watching. I only heard about The Hitchhiker only recently and am catching up on episodes, some with a twist in the tale.
Dolce India: Street Eats In Kolkata (2016)
Introducing Chef Sneha
Street Eats in Kolkata is the ninth episode of season two of Dolce India, which I discovered only recently.
Anyway, what I like about Dolce India is the passion that chef David Rocco has for Indian cuisine, and his willingness to try street food. In this episode, David meets up with Sneha Singhi, who studied at the Le Cordon Bleu in Paris (that's in France, not Texas). Anyway, Chef Sneha should have her own series because she is very engaging, delightful and knowledgeable. Rocco enjoys the Kati roll although he finds the super sweet desserts a bit too super sweet. Anyway, I look forward to seeing the rest of season two.
Bake Off: Crème de la Crème: Episode #8.4 (2023)
The second group of six
So here in week four we meet the teams from the second group of six. But there's a twist because there are only five teams to start with. So who are they.
Caroline and Martin, Bisous Bisous, Manchester.
Chantelle and Kasia, Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire.
Mustapha and Tracy, Mustapha is from Birmingham, and he exited in the first round of 2018.
Naira and Andrea, from Brazil, and met through social media and have a strong Christian faith.
Mauro and Daniel, The Landmark London. At 59 years old, Daniel is the season's oldest contestant
Due to unforeseen circumstances the sixth team is missing.
Traditional Swedish cake was in the first stage of this week's competition.
Mauro and Daniel came first, Caroline's team came second, Chantelle's team came third. So it was down to Mustapha's team and Naira's team to avoid elimination. In a surprise, the judges decided that because there were only five teams, Mustapha and Naira go into week five. This is a departure from the previous season where I think in group two, it started with five teams, and one of them got eliminated.
Naira and Andrea had a tearful hug because of their escape from the jaws of elimination. We'll see in week five whether the missing team will return and how many eliminations there will be.
Bake Off: Crème de la Crème: Episode #8.3 (2023)
Week three
So here in week three, you have the four remaining teams from group one battling it out to get into the round of six, which is in week seven. So who are the four remaining teams
Andrew (from Bolton, England) and Raf, Harwoods Pattiserie.
Mayank and Dharma, St James' Court, A Taj Hotel, London. Mayank used to work with Cherish but that doesn't mean she'll be easy on him.
Annie and Subin, The Dorchester, London.
Then you have Nicoletta and Georgina, Meraki Baking Studio. Nicoletta is from Italy and her family members are dentists rather ironically.
So Andrew's team came first in this episode, then Annie's team, then Mayank's team. Unfortunately this meant that Nicoletta's team was eliminated, because as Cherish commented, their taste profile was not up to standard. But thankfully Nicoletta and Georgina were cheerful in defeat, so maybe they will return for another season.
Bake Off: Crème de la Crème: Episode #8.2 (2023)
Week two - a controversial elimination
So here in week two, Ellie Taylor has settled in and has funny lines.
So who are the five remaining teams in this first group.
Andrew (from Bolton, England) and Raf, Harwoods Pattiserie.
Then you have Nicoletta and Georgina, Meraki Baking Studio. Nicoletta is from Italy and her family members are dentists rather ironically.
Mayank and Dharma, St James' Court, A Taj Hotel, London. Mayank used to work with Cherish but that doesn't mean she'll be easy on him.
Annie and Subin, The Dorchester, London.
Margo and Ally, Lexington Catering. Margo is from Poland.
So Andrew's team came first in this episode, and then Annie's team came second. Mayank's team came third. Nicoletta's team came fourth .Then in a shock elimination, Margo's team was eliminated.
Benoit told Nicoletta's team they were saved by their flavors.
Bake Off: Crème de la Crème: Episode #8.1 (2023)
Introducing Ellie Taylor
Season eight opens with a new co-presenter, Ellie Taylor, who replaced Stacey Solomon. Taylor is also married to acclaimed CNN journalist Phil Black. I think Taylor is a very engaging presence in the series, but there was no acknowledgement of the departure of Solomon, whereas at the beginning of season seven there was an acknowledgement of the departure of Tom Allen, who was replaced by Solomon.
So who are the six teams in this first group.
Andrew (from Bolton, England) and Raf, Harwoods Pattiserie.
Then you have Nicoletta and Georgina, Meraki Baking Studio. Nicoletta is from Italy and her family members are dentists rather ironically.
Martyn and Jenny, Martyn used to be a singer.
Margo and Ally, Lexington Catering. Margo is from Poland.
Mayank and Dharma, St James' Court, A Taj Hotel, London. Mayank used to work with Cherish but that doesn't mean she'll be easy on him.
Annie and Subin, The Dorchester, London.
Okay, so who came first in this episode. Well, it was Andrew and Raf. Margo's team came second. Nicoletta's team came third, Mayank's team came fourth, Annie's team came fifth.
So Martyn's team was eliminated.
