2036 Origin Unknown (2018)
Terrible execution
Origin Unknown tries extremely hard to make a commentary on human nature, but fails to grasp the concepts it covers. I have a very difficult time imagining how it's possible to make a movie about space travel, alien technology, artificial intelligence, and secret government projects boring... but I just saw it firsthand. The acting is really, really bad. The special effects are The CW quality. SyFy bad. The only positive is this is a movie about the thing it's about, and I DID finish watching it.
Deep Rising (1998)
In 2018, this is not good at all
I enjoy a lot of critically panned movies. I enjoy cheese. Bad acting doesn't always ruin my entertainment. Deep Rising somehow managed to annoy me though. It's extremely cringey. The humor is a huge miss. And the CGI (which seems like the foundation) has aged horribly. The actual threat in the movie makes no sense. The rules seem to change to fit the script. And everyone loves to just fire their rifles randomly for 10-15 seconds when things get too slow. I'm refraining from going 1 Star simply because I finished it, and Famke Janssen is a total babe.
Tomb Raider (2018)
Fun, entertaining
For what it's worth, I enjoyed Vikander as Lara Croft. Not every movie needs to be innovative and thought provoking. Tomb Raider succeeds at being a a popcorn, intense adventure flick. It did feel more like Uncharted than Tomb Raider, IMHO.
Wendigo (2001)
One of the worst movies I've finished
I had to double check the date on this one, as i swore it said 2001. Why then, does Wendigo look like it was recorded off of a late 70s VHS Horror Anthology? The acting is fine, but everything else is from bad to worse. Visual effects scream shoestring budget, to the point of why even bother. Writing is awful, as someone seems to have attempted over an hour of pure character development, without anything actually ever happening. By the time the climax rolls around, my brain has all but checked out. I honestly don't know who this is made for. Most definitely not for me.
