Rambo III (1988)
USA anticommunist propaganda tragically relevant to current situation in Afghanistan
This is an american anticommunist propaganda film. As everybody knows USA win wars only in films. Korea, Vietnam and now Afghanistan where big defeats of the USA "superpower" so they have to serve this to their american low education nationalist audience in a more easily digestive manner. Tragically the film is.relevant to the current Afghanistan situation and reminds us how USA gave power to Talibans and made them what they are today. Ancient Greeks had a word about this behaviour of the Americans , it's called "hubris". Check it in google.
Cold Skin (2017)
Much more than you may expect
I watched it expecting a decent horror movie the most. But it turned out to be much much more. Lovecraftian, atmospheric, poetic, suspensful, but above all a great comment on "difference" and our "civilization".
Aftermath (2017)
Arnold takes a turn
A different Arnold unexpectedly good as actor in a very slow and boring movie. The scenario is not bad, but it's a 30' story that is expanded to 94' by force. And this force is applied on the patience of the viewer. The only reason to watch it is the "different" Arnold. We hope he takes a turn again and returns to his old route.
Monsters: Dark Continent (2014)
Fighting the monsters while uninvited
This is not a movie about monsters and if you expect to watch another huge monsters action adventure you'll be disappointed.
The USA Army fights the monsters in some Middle East country without avoiding to kill or destroy the lives of innocent locals. The local resistance fights against the USA army. The metaphor too obvious.
So this is more a film about war and its influence on people. A good film for someone who wants to watch a "monster" movie with a second level of interpretation. The film has good monster FX, good photography with a lot of beautiful images, good acting and enough action, suspense and drama. The only negative criticism i could make to this film is that it is really slow sometimes.
The Water Diviner (2014)
Simple minded and loses its point
Good British, good Australians, good Turks and bad Greeks in a simple minded approach of the really turbulent and complicated post WWI period in Asia Minor. War is a crime committed by the ruling classes of societies so they can pursue their own interests sacrificing their own people.
The movie has all the ingredients needed to become a good movie about how people independent of their nationalities can keep their humanity even in brutal periods (like a war) forgive, respect and help each other. But since it chooses to depict only one of the nations involved in this war (the Greeks) as the bad guys it looses completely its point.
And no this didn't bother me as you may think , because I am Greek. I like Turkish people and I see them as a brother nation and it's true that in this specific period they did a defensive war against an encouraged by UK and France Greek imperialism. So I would do the same criticism if any other people was depicted negatively.
American Sniper (2014)
Is this a simple USA propaganda? Not exactly i think...
First let me make my political view clear.I am leftist and I believe USA is an imperialist power and Hollywood is a tool to shape public opinion in the country (and outside). Second, I appreciate Eastwood's talent as an actor and a director. Third, I know Eastwood is a right wing conservative. But although we have completely opposite views I recognize that he is not the typical simple minded conservative.
So reading the plot and the reviews and having my political point view I watched this movie with an opinion already shaped. At first thought I could easily say this is another USA propaganda film with good heroic American soldiers and uncivilized Muslims. But is it?
The film is a good film and as in all good films everyone sees what he wants to see. So a simple minded American citizen who doesn't understand that American soldiers are sent to kill people not to protect their country but to pursue the interests of USA bourgeoisie will watch a film about a typical American hero.
And what a leftist will watch you ll ask. Well what I saw was a killer destroyed by his killings. I saw that killing even for a high purpose (as he thinks) is not something without a cost. It destroys the soul. And if it destroys the soul of an individual imagine what happens to the soul of the community or the country (USA in this case) that gives misery to the people of this world.
The Legend of Hercules (2014)
Hollywood keeps on molesting Greek history and mythology.
I liked 300 although is very very far from being historically accurate. It presented a historical event exaggerated and distorted from a comics-fantasy point of view. But Frank Miller is great, Snyder did a great job and the result was spectacular, enjoyable and fun to watch.
Clash of the titans loosely based on the story of Perseus and Andromeda at least kept the main story.
So i don't have problem with historical or mythical accuracy. After all we go to movies to watch fiction, if we want accuracy we watch documentaries.
But this movie has NOTHING to do with Hercules. The character is NOT Hercules, the story is NOT the story of Hercules, the representation of the 'ancient world' has NOTHING to do with ancient Greece of 1200 BC.
Its simply the story of a "Konan like" character living in an undefined historical period , who could be called Konanis Papadopoulos (if the director insist to present him as Greek) but no way Hercules.
Curious thing is that while the real mythological story of Hercules is a very interesting story with all the elements that a viewer would love to watch (monsters, violence, suspense, interesting character, story twists) NOBODY in the history of cinema tried to make a movie really based on it. Lets hope some day someone will.
