Chain Letter (2010)
Disgusting piece of garbage
I like a good horror movie, but this piece of crap is nothing more than a few extremely gruesome kill scenes taped together with a script written by a forth grader. I hate torture porn, I hate the proliferation of it, had I known this was going to be that I would not have watched it, in fact I only watched up to the point where the Johnny Jones character is brutally tortured and killed, the scene made me sick so I did a quick eject and threw it back in the mail. The convoluted history of this film should have been a clear warning to me to stay far far away. This was filmed in 2007 and bounced from distributor to distributor until the most desperate distributor finally decided to release this turkey on a innocent public. Do not waste your time on this straight to video mess, the acting is horrible, no story whatsoever and it is truly disgusting. I hope someone out there with a brain bigger than a chimps will inject the genre with intelligent horror and not ride on sick gore which if the story sucks is not worth watching anyway, two thumbs down
Beastly (2011)
Bad Really Bad
I love Alex P! he is hot and he is a good actor but he should have passed on this project. There is little character development and there is not enough build up to the central part of the story. I also just did not believe that Alex's (Kyle) would be interested in Lindy. There was no chemistry here, and the script is to blame. Neil Patrick saves the movie from total turkey-ism. Mary Kate was also a surprise, I thought she did a good job and wish she would have had a larger role. Overall a forgettable film that everyone involved should have passed on. I hope Alex's next films are better than this cause he is too new in the business to be putting out bombs. He is already getting typecast as the a-hole good looking jerk in half of the films he has done. Hopefully more positive characters will come his way. Don't waste your time on this one, its a straight to DVD kinda flick.
The Misfits (1961)
Over-hyped and Boring
I don't get the deal with this movie. I fell asleep twice as I tried with all of my energy to get through it. Monroe sleep walks through the picture, she appears bloated and drugged and a little to old to be playing the constant "Show girl" act. The romance between her and Gable is laughable, he was way to old to be playing a leading man role here, it would have made more sense to have Monty Clift in that role and perhaps a young Steve Mcqueen in Clift's role. Thelma Ritter always shines and she is really the only bright spot in the film. The on location filming is a bonus as it was rare for studios to go on location at that time. The quality of the remastered DVD is excellent but the story is SO slow and SO unbelievable that I just found it odd and rather contrived. I hear Monroe made it a living hell for the rest of the cast and crew on this film as she was always late, drugged and unprofessional. I have never found her to be that great of an actress to begin with, here it's just painful to watch. For die hard Monroe fans only.
Lopez Tonight (2009)
No Surprise
I can't believe his show was on as long as it was. Lopez is a funny guy and his sitcom was OK, but the few times I watched his talk show I was not impressed. He also has a lot of issues around women and gays and that is a big turn off. He's just kinda of a big mouth who used his wife until he got ahead then he dumped her, I think the word tool is appropriate in his case or perhaps he is a closet case? Either way I hope they find something with some entertainment value to put on during that time slot that is not a talk show or a reality show, hell reruns of the Flying Nun would be an improvement! I think the whole late night thing is pretty stale now, I can't stand Leno, Cohen or Kimmell, (how Jimmy got his own show I will never know, I guess he was F;;;ing Ben Affleck.
Country Strong (2010)
Tim McGraw steals the movie
There is one good thing about Country Strong and that is the wonderful performance of Tim McGraw. The complex emotional performance of a man watching the love of his life self destruct as well as grieving for his lost child is heartbreaking. He goes from anger and resentment to sadness and withdrawal, just as one would expect for someone in his position. The two supporting characters really are not needed here. The story would have been much more powerful if it had centered just on McGraw and Paltro. The pacing is slow and its a difficult film to watch. I felt emotionally drained after watching it. The soundtrack is good but the film seems to wonder around trying to figure out who it is about and where it is going. Don't pick this one if you are looking for an "up" film.
Riptide (1934)
Dull and uninteresting
I loved Norma Shearer in The Women,Marie Antoinette and The Divorcée. However I'm finding her other films to be one disappointment after another and Riptide is no exception. Costarring the overused Robert Montgomery, Norma stars as yet another NY party girl (she was now a bit old to be playing these giddy socialite parts) who of course meets a Lord, gets married and then a misreported adventure with a former bf causes scandal and she is faced with divorce. The pace of the film is about as slow as watching paint dry, Montgomery is his usual annoying self as the drunken bf who almost kills himself because of his love for Norma (after not seeing her for years he does this in one evening). The plot is stale, Norma overacts and Montgomery is just annoying. Herbert Marshall is totally miscast as a leading man, as he seems the most boring man on earth, why would Norma's character even like him? I found myself falling asleep during the pivotal (it's divorce!) scene. For die hard Norma fans only.
Over the Edge (1979)
Still an awesome movie 32 years later
This is the cult teen movie of all time and I'm glad I'm lucky enough to know it.
In 1979 another film entitled "The Warriors" was released not long before "Over the Edge", and in LA and Newyork gang members in the theaters caused trouble and vandalized the theaters. So Orion Pictures got scared and basically shelved this movie for fear it would cause teen riots.
Thank god HBO was in it's infancy then and showed the movies the theaters didn't dare (at the time). That is where I first saw "Over the Edge". When I found out it had finally been released on DVD I was thrilled. To see this film in its original widescreen format and in pristine condition is awesome. If you have been reading the reviews on here you know the story, so I won't go into those details, but what I will tell you is that I know exactly where most of the filming sites are located in Aurora CO.
I lived in Aurora at the time and it was a huge deal that the movie was being filmed there. All of the background players are actual Jr high school kids from Aurora, in fact all of the kid actors are 15 and under so the realism makes this film a standout.
New Granada Jr High is actually Aurora Hills Middle School located at 1009 South Uvalda Street Aurora, CO 80012-3407. This is right at the intersection of E. Mississippi Ave and South Troy Street.
The party house where Carl sees Cory making out with Mike Perry in the basement is located at 1484 S Vaughn Circle, Aurora CO 80012 (this is a private residence so if you visit, please do not trespass or disturb the residents).
The town homes where Carl and Claude lived across from the Rec are located in the 2600 block of south Dayton Way in Aurora Co 80012. The Rec of course was a set and the empty field it was in is now a huge condo complex.
The apartments Matt Dillon lived in are located in East Denver along Cherry Creek Drive south and E Mississippi Ave.
If you visit hope you enjoy!
The Other Side of Midnight (1977)
Great Overlooked Movie now on DVD
I read the book "The Other Side of Midnight" when it first came out and fell in love with Noelle and Catherine. When the movie came out I saw it twice at the theater and loved it. 20th century fox back-stabbed this movie by not marketing it that is why it did poorly at the box office. In reality this is an old style, glossy, sweeping love story set between the years 1939 and 1947.
I won't go into the plot other than to say it has it all. Love, hate, betrayal, glamor, drama, on location shooting all over the world (this was not a low budget film). I highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys sweeping dramas, wonderful score and cinematography and a young Susan Sarandon already showing her big star chops. It is a long movie 2 hours and 45 minutes on DVD but it has been remastered the picture is perfect and the sound is as good as can be expected from a film made in 1977.
Lipstick (1976)
Realistic Look at our injustice system
Lipstick was just released on DVD and the remastered print in its original widescreen format greatly improves the viewing experience. I had an old VHS copy which was full screen and a bad transfer at that. This DVD release is clear, crisp and has great audio for a 1976 film.
I won't rehash the story but will comment on the film itself. The stark depiction of rape on screen was a new thing in 1976 and I think most people were uncomfortable with the subject matter. The film is well produced and it give you a great look back at LA circa 1976. The performances are somewhat uneven but for her first film Margaux gives a pretty good performance, especially in the rape and courtroom scenes. She was a beautiful women who's memory is forever on film. The striking thing about this film is that 35 years later our legal system and the way it treats women has not changed much, most rapes still go unreported and few perps are convicted.
The movie has its flaws but it never fails to entertain and it is much better than most films released today. I recommend this film for it's polished glossy feel, gritty realism, courtroom drama and dramatic conclusion. The film holds up well and other than the disco music at the beginning it could just as well be a story told today.
Don't listen to the haters on here, rent it or buy it, it's worth having in your collection.
Thirst (2010)
Worth Seeing
This is a well done independent film that has it's weak spots but overall is very good. The cinematography is beautiful in this film and the acting is well done by the four principles. I do wish that the Tyson and Jennifer characters had been flushed out more, their back-story was just not there and it made it harder for me to care about them, the married couple was played out very well and the ending was very heart wrenching. There are of course the "how could these people be so stupid" moments, but they are few and the film really does its job in showing how dangerous it is to be in any isolated area with out adequate supplies and ALWAYS let people know where you are. But I remember doing stupid things when I was young so you just have to get past those some points and take in the movie as a whole. Good weekend afternoon flick.
Kill Speed (2010)
Horrible script
I wish I could give this film a higher rating but I just can't, not only is the script horrible, the acting is OK at best. I saw this movie because Brandon Quinn is in it. I thought his performance in "Thirst" was very good, but in "Kill Speed" the lines the poor guy has to deliver are so awful I just cringed at times. The concept and plot of the movie are good as are the flying scenes but the acting is so bad (especially Christian Monzon) he is a breathtaking man but he needs to stay focused on his modeling career because acting is not his forte. When the most accomplished actor in your cast is Tom Arnold you should be concerned, very concerned. Skip this one, it's just that bad overall. I do want to say that I hope Brandon Quinn gets some better film roles because he has the talent i.e. Thirst, he just needs a good script.
You Again (2010)
Funny & Cute
I just don't get the bad and nasty reviews on here. We saw the movie last night and thought it was very funny and cute. This is not a film to be taken seriously it is supposed to be farce and it was nice to unplug from the real world for two hours and just have some fun. Jamie Lee and Sigourney where great in their respective roles and the rest of the cast was good especially the young actor who played "Tim" he was great and the ending is funny. If your looking for some "I don't want to think for a while" time this is good afternoon flick to sit back, eat popcorn and watch. You may want to wait until the DVD comes out but this is not in anyway a bad movie. Considering the violent trash 3D overload crap Hollywood has been vomiting onto the screen this past year "You Again" was a breath of fresh air.
Holiday in Mexico (1946)
Title and Ending seem like afterthoughts
I watched Holiday in Mexico for the first time last night. The majority of the picture is quite entertaining. Jane Powell is quite lovely and I enjoyed her acting but I can't stand the music they made her sing. First, she is a sixteen year old bobbysoxer not a 40 year old women. I think most of the music should have geared for a younger audience. Roddy McDowell is great in this film as is Walter Pidegon. The ending of the film is horrible. No where in the rest of the picture is it even mentioned that it is Christmas time or close to it. The ending should have been an upbeat modern number and there should have been more conclusion as to the status of the relationships between Powell and McDowell and Walter Pidegon and Massey. It seemed like they just tacked on the ending and slapped a title on it. I think something more like "The Ambassador's Daughter" would have been a better title and dump the Ava Maria ending. I give it a 6 for overall quality but I don't know what people were thinking back then when it comes to music and age appropriate singers.
Naked Fame (2004)
I cant wait to see it now
I have not seen this movie but after reading the reviews I have got to see it. I always hated gay porn stars because they (90% of the time) treat other gay men outside of "The inner circle" like crap. I've seen Colton (Glen) around Fort Lauderdale and he has his nose so high in the air a bird would have to climb it to lay an egg. The years of meth use, sex with every guy he can't remember and with an ego to match Glen Beck's he is not a likable person. These porn stars come and go like trash blowing down the street and they always pull the pity party when they are dried up and wrung out like a used mop. I don't have any pity for them...Now I can enjoy seeing them make total fools of themselves. Perhaps Colton can get a job at the new "G" resort opening in Wilton Manors, I'm sure they need all service maids.
Just the Way You Are (1984)
Now on DVD widescreen remaster
I have always loved this movie. Give it a shot and don't rely on the snide reviews on here. This movie is not suppose to be Schindler's List. Now over 20 years later the movie is now available on DVD, I got mine from Moviesunlimited.com. It has been remastered and is in widescreen format. This movie accomplishes just what it is suppose to, a breezy romantic comedy with an original plot. Kristy is wonderful and Michel Ontkean fresh from his groundbreaking role in "Making Love" is not only HOT but a gentle caring man in this role. Another reviewer stated that they didn't like it when McNicole was more "kid like" in the later half of the movie. Well of course is she like a child, she has been in a leg brace (due to post polio infection) and she never had a normal childhood, so of course she is going to be somewhat childlike doing things she has never done before. If you are looking for a good rainy day movie then watch "Just the Way you are" it's a good flick that leaves you feeling happy for the characters and makes you also look at how you treat others and how others treat you, without making it a 2 1/2 hour bore fest of background story and intellectual crap.
The Back-up Plan (2010)
Gigli 2
First off I love J Lo, but she makes bad choices about some of her movies. After a 5 year absence I was hoping for something great like "Monster In Law" unfortunately this is not it. J Lo is getting a bit old to be playing the hapless unwed single girl, now at 40 she needs something meaty to sink her teeth into. A serious drama that is not another thrown together love story that just does not work. If you want to see this wait for the DVD but don't waste your money at the theater, you'll be kicking yourself. Now I hear J Lo is the lead in the remake of 1987's Overboard which starred Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, which bombed at the box office. Hopefull the producers and writers will come up with a remake that will be GOOD J Lo cannot afford another box office failure.
2012 (2009)
Worst of 2009
2012 is the WORST film I have seen in the past year, thank god I didn't pay 10.00 bucks to see it at the theater. The makers of this film stole scenes from every disaster movie ever made, The Poseidon Adventure, Titanic,Earthquake,Avalanche,Airport, Dante's Peak etc. The special effects were rather amazing but the is nothing believable in the characters ability to at one moment be a slacker limo driver then suddenly a Bruce Willis Die Hard action hero. The same can be said for the Dr boyfriend of Kusack's ex wife, he has had "Two flying lessons" but can handle a plane like a 20 year Air Force vet? c'mon this was so schlock that I hoped they all die. The whole Russian thing, what was that about? To top it off I can't believe that Woody Harrelson, Danny Glover and poor old George Seagal agreed to be in this turkey. Don't waste your time with this one, its horrible
Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell (1968)
I love this movie!
Don't pay any attention to the bad reviews on here (few as they are) this movie must be watched and appreciated for what it is, farce. The stellar cast turn in great performances and the writing is still very funny. This is the film which inspired the musical stage play "Mama Mia" as well as the film. But the two stories are completely different. Now out on DVD, remastered and in wide screen for the first time ever, this is a must see on a big screen TV. The video and sound transfer is amazing, clear, crisp picture and sound. Filmed on location in Italy this was no low budget film. Is it realistic, no, its not suppose to be, just sit back and enjoy it!
Valkyrie (2008)
Excellent production of a story we need to know about
I just saw the film last night at home and I was very surprised at how much I liked the film and how intrigued I was in the telling of this story. I think the anti Tom Cruise crowd did everything they could to try and sabotage this film. But at a cost of around 90 million and a gross so far at almost 300 million world wide, the film did not lose money and the story is an important one for everyone to know about. This film is based on intelligent script writing and performances not CGI special effects and non stop violence, I think most people are so dumbed down by Hollywood they can't connect to anything that is intelligent and historically accurate, which the film is, there were very few liberties taken. I highly recommend this film for anyone who has the ability to understand complex history. Also many of the filming sites were the actual places in Berlin, which makes it that much more powerful.
The Hangover (2009)
This crap won a golden globe?
The worst comedy I've seen in the last year. The talented cast is wasted (especially Heather Graham) on this unoriginal script filled with shallow stereotypes. Bradley Cooper struts through the movie as a completely unlikable good-looking jerk who has no problems cheating on his wife and ignoring his son while in Vegas. The other actors are mostly forgettable and poor Heather Graham is wasted in her cameo role. How this ever got nominated for a golden globe and how it won is obviously a bit of a back room bargain and payoff with Hollywood Foreign Press, because the film is not funny. I only laughed once during the whole thing and that was the tiger in the car scene. Its sad when Mike Tyson's tiger is funnier then the entire rest of the cast. I'm glad I did not waste 10.00 bucks seeing this at the show, this is a rental and no more. This makes Porky's and Weekend at Bernie's 2 look like The Godfather, don't waste your time.
The Doris Day Show (1968)
Love this show (but with some changes)
You all know the backdrop of this series so I won't bore you with it. I love this show and I too like the season 2 and 3 shows the best. As far as format changes go, I think they did a really good job going from season 1 to 2 to 3. It was a logical progression, Doris gets a job, then she moves the family into town etc. I hate the way they changed the format in season 4 and 5. Had I been around at that time to put my two cents in I would have done several things. 1. In season 4 I would have left things exactly as they were in season three and brought in the Peter Lawford character as Doris's serious love interest and possible step father for the boys. This along with the normal goings on would have brought yet another logical advancement. 2. In season 5 I would have Doris and Peter get engaged, Doris gets a new Boss and is promoted to a staff writer position at the magazine. The season finale would have been Doris and Peter's wedding with the entire cast from all the seasons in attendance. This could have been a huge ratings getter and a great way to end the series. I just don't know what they were thinking when they did 4 and 5. There are some episodes that are good but the show is missing the heart it had in 1,2, and 3. As was stated by another poster we cant go back and change history but thankfully there is enough good in seasons 1 2 and 3 that I watch them all the time. A must for Doris Fans.
Paranormal Activity (2007)
Scary and realistic
Everyone who is giving this bad reviews must be under the age of 25. They don't understand that your own imagination is far scarier than any Jason or Freddy and any of these lame remakes that Hollywood is putting out which all suck. For me, the original Halloween (1978) is the scariest movie ever. Paranormal Activity is really creepy and if this stuff was happening in my house I would be freaking out! The setting is an ideal upscale San Diego housing development where Day Trader Micah and his girlfriend (The fabulous) Kristy (This girl can act!) find themselves at the mercy of a demonic force, which has attached itself to Kristy. This film IS very low budget, but its suppose to be, your watching someones home video of things moving in their house. It was totally believable. The bedroom scenes are just so creepy, after seeing the film and going home, I was not really thinking much about it. Then I went to bed and I thought "What if stuff happens when your asleep and you don't know it"? That is scary and I thought this crew did a fantastic job putting this together. On a 11,000 budget they have grossed 9 million so far, that is because most people over the age of 30 want something good not some lame Michael Bay crap. I can't stand his work it is so bad and Rob Zombie, horrible. Paranormal Activity is worth the money to see in the theater. Is it the most scary? No, its not. It creeps you out and makes you look at your own home in a very different way. I did have to get up and check the closets and behind the shower curtain before I went to bed. And I left the TV on. Its just disturbing more than scary and it stays with you. The acting is great and the character development is excellent and it is very funny as well. The two actors work well together and are a realistic couple that does realistic things. The last few minutes are SO creepy that I just thought I would be out the front door running down the street if it was me. 9 out of 10 just for showing Hollywood it takes IMAGINATION not millions to make something good.
