A Cult Classic That Ages Like Fine Wine - Zemeckis' Dark, Satirical Masterpiece
14 October 2024
I relished this movie when I first saw it in 1992, and after all these years, I watched it again in 2024. In fact, it has more meaning to me today than it did when I was in my 20s, a young strapping Lad ...hyuk hyuk.. when it first came out. Even back then, I enjoyed it and might have rated it a 7 or 7.5. I would have done that based more purely on the special effects of that time-which were like a 'wow' considering early 90's standards. While less on the vanity, fake and pomposity of the two female leads, the gaudiness they are always trying to achieve.

In the scenario, the two female leads are putting on an air of grandeur that is exaggerated and artificial, projecting a sense of pomposity that borders on the ridiculous. They are clearly trying to cultivate an image of luxury and sophistication, but instead, they come across as overly theatrical and contrived, dripping with insincerity. Their desire to stand out, rather than being admired for elegance, feels like a shallow spectacle of extravagance, masking deeper flaws of character.

I'm certain that everyone who is aging, maturing, and gaining experience will watch it with totally different eyes....and if they scoff, they'll have to make this voyage... again a sneaky 'hyuk hyuk' here.

As time goes on, you start to appreciate more and more what a classic it is, like vintage wine. Compared to the utter nonsense and garbage we're served nowadays, this movie stands the test of time (the ravages of time) and easily gets a straight 10 from me.

It's a black comedy-I found the Sydney Pollack cameo an absolute riot -it's philosophical, with lines like, "Have you ever seen a neighbor in L. A. in the last 12 years?" And, of course, you really need to pay attention to the generic sublime message being conveyed.

Zemeckis expertly blended gothic aesthetics, satire, and supernatural elements, creating an atmosphere that's both stylish and macabre. A real Zemeckis craftwork.

This one's a Cult, no two doubts about that.

The Howling (1981)
5/10
good in 1981 but not in 2024
28 July 2024
I saw Howling again yesterday, on the 24th of July, 2024. To be frank, it was just below average. Let's put it this way: a lot of flaws, a lot of things that do not gel together. I could go into details, but let's spare them. In the last scene, when the heroine turns into what was supposed to be a werewolf, it looked more like an ugly dog than anything resembling a werewolf on TV cam live studios. But then I realized that this is a 1981 film, and we are talking about something from 45 years ago.

In the meantime, I have been, of course, spoiled with the likes of Predator, Total Recall, The Matrix, and other films with advanced special effects. Nowadays, we have factory-turnout films like Star Wars. So, I can assume that in 1981, Howling was eye-popping. Basically, my review would not suffice for today. For today's standards, I'd give it a four out of ten. However, in 1981, I think it was eye-popping at the time. Joe Dante did good stuff, but the SFX were lacking-also comparing with :A. A. W. I. L (John Landis)

One might consider making a remake of The Howling today with state-of-the-art technology available in 2024. That would be a fair competition rather than downgrading what Joe Dante made and making a statement out of it in 2024. So, give it a try. It deserves the marks it has received on IMDb as I speak.

interpretation of the ending of "Edge of Tomorrow" presents an intriguing and thought-provoking perspective
19 June 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I watched Edge of Tomorrow once again, and this time I'm getting a slightly different meaning towards the end. Actually, I don't think it's a bug. He kills the Omega and gets infected by the Alpha's blood once again, and that's the second time in this film. This time, since the Omega is dead, he has become the Omega himself. He can manipulate time and reset it in his favor. This time, he manipulates time in such a way that he wakes up in the helicopter and is no longer seen as a rogue officer but as someone honored and decorated. He has reset the day, and with the Omega dead, he has basically become a super god. This is the new meaning I'm getting: after the Omega's death, he becomes the Omega himself and can manipulate time whenever he wants during that one day, in his own favor. Otherwise, I don't see any reason why he wakes up in the helicopter. I don't think the director is such a fool or an idiot. This is the new meaning I see and get after watching it again after so many years.

Of course, this one can't beat Fury Road, but it is just up there.
25 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I have to give a review right now(the very 1st impressions-1st day , 1st show) , so here it is. Yesterday night, I walked out of the theater feeling overwhelmed. I had a small headache when I first walked inside the movie. It was like the end of a long work week. For the first 10-15 minutes, the headache persisted, but when I walked out, it was as if I had taken a double dosage of paracetamol; it was all gone.

Now, coming back to the objective phases, the stunts are just eye-popping. There could be some CGI involved, definitely, but my eyes were so overwhelmed by the physical stunts that the negligible 20-25% of CGI blended in seamlessly. The movie is, as I said, pretty great. It's coming from George Miller, who hasn't diminished and still stands strong in delivering stories, especially revenge stories, the way he initially did in the 1979 Mad Max. The way he dishes out revenge is absolutely great in these desert road settings.

There are some minor flaws in this film. For example, I could tell that the boy being used with the winch and the crane is not a boy but a girl. You can definitely see the shape, so it couldn't be a boy. Furiosa as a boy must be using the same Loo as the others, & nobody noticed...

*Post Edit: My Gripes

  • In the first 10 minutes, Furiosa's mother gets a clear shot at the remaining two riders but decides against it. But why?

  • Immortan Joe 'deals' with a young Furiosa, yet when she goes 'missing,' there's no alarm, no ruckus. And that 'mute boy' turns up from nowhere and is accepted in the community. Most of the Citadel guys are bare-chested, and here's a boy all decked up all time-no eye brows raised. Let alone Scrotus being so near face-to-face and failing to recognize joe's missing 'deal' in the Citadel. Yet, when later Furiosa just turns up and says, "he's mine," to Immortan Joe, there is no drama like, "Oh, I found you," or "Where were you all this time?" The scene just finishes there. This boy/girl enigma was the weakest shackle of the movie. The citadel is not just only full of morons. :)

-Praetorian Jack was a miscast. Short, no build, short legs, or was he made to look short and dwarfish, and has swollen puffy cheeks-pudgiest to say the least. Sorry, not the guy I want to see as someone with the ''most runs on Fury Road , who brings back booty every time!''. Needed someone more taller, with a build and Macho.

But things like that can be overlooked, allowing us to carry on with the enjoyment the movie provides.

Once again, it's a Mad Max movie; it just keeps on moving. Every scene is dynamic, albeit with some philosophical moments, which I think are necessary for a break from all the action. I had to settle down and think, "Hey, what did I just see?-the mind boggling physics behind the stunts mostly" and let me recollect and analyze the information 5 seconds back while the film is continuously overtaking your thoughts & senses.

Of course, this is a very rough review. I'm going to come back and re-edit this because there is a lot of information in the movie that needs to be re-watched and analyzed so a proper review can only come when each and every frame has been properly digested by an ardent fan of George Miller's Mad Max. Again, just feeling overwhelmed. There are minor flaws in the movie & Some of the cast seemed misfit, which I may come back to later....but Thanks, George, thanks Junkie XL, and thanks, IMAX.!

Oh yeah, and definitely, Chris was good in my eyes. Furiosa did shine, but you cannot overshadow Charlize Theron from the 2015 film. Of course, this movie can't beat Fury Road, but it is just up there.

Alien³ (1992)
1/10
just a bloody waste of 50 million dollars & your time
29 December 2023
One of the worst alien movies I've ever seen. It's really at the bottom of the pit. According to IMDb, the movie was made for 50 million dollars. Had they given this to me, I'm 100% sure I would have made a better tripe than what I saw in this one. The movie came out in 1992. I had already seen it then, and during the Christmas holidays of 2023, I decided to give it one more go - to watch it once again. I'm in my 50s, a sci-fi buff, and I think I am wise enough to understand life now. I've got a family and kids who are settled. With all that wisdom, when I look at this movie... what a shame. It's an alien movie, after all, and I saw it when I was in my 20s. So, I was thinking my take on this one would be different, say 30 years later. During these Christmas holidays, I had to watch it over three times. The first time, after one hour, I had to switch it off because, with all the time I had, I just couldn't bear to watch it more than the first 60 minutes. Then I gave it a second try, watched another 30-35 minutes, and again turned it off. On my third attempt - maybe two or three days later - I watched the final remaining part of the movie, and this is just pure, absolute tripe. This director is just hogwash; the adjectives fail me. This movie is so bad that I would not even go into the content and turn it upside down or inside out to tell what exactly went wrong with it. First of all, it's green and white to look at! I've seen black and white movies; this is more like green, brown, and white. And to just imagine that Ripley is not supposed to move alone-strict orders , and then er she come on her own into the canteen la-la blady-bla. Not to mention the high-tech biotech engineers not wearing state-of-the-art bunny suits but instead waving white trash bags in the wind. And did anyone notice those 'backpacks' on the soldiers/marines who came in for rescue? I have seen better lunchboxes at school. I'm just plain insulted here. I mean, everything that was being said or shown in the movie, it's not even understood by the creators themselves, including this director. It's just a bloody waste of 50 million dollars.

RoboCop 2 (1990)

a straight 10...& why not
28 December 2023
"R2 is not a bad film at all. While the first one had serious underlying issues disguised as jokes, this one has flat straight one-liners that work well in their respective places. The makers, I think, knew they won't surpass the first, but this one gets very close to the former's greatness and can be viewed as a cult follow-up. The action and battle scenes are very good, considering the negligible CGI of those days. The Nazi-like flag of the OCP draping the building and the Nazi-style helmet Cain carries on his robot avatar give a comic dark view of the ongoing aspects. Also, the cops towards the end are very reminiscent of Nazi Gestapo uniforms-not exactly, but one can make out the glaring inspired similarities. I found it a very enjoyable movie, with its share of laughter at society and corporate decisions that are still rampant now (in 2023, about 30 years later)- salaries getting cut & pension plans to the docks. The ozone layer has diminished, thieves can be electrocuted while the focus remains on battery drain, a nuclear facility in Amazon has blown its stack, and a surgeon general's assassination just 20 minutes ago, takes a backseat in the news, even long after the ads, heh heh heh. The pickup string of scenes in Motor City, from the bag woman getting robbed to the robber being robbed, the prostitutes walking by with robbed loot, the store blazing off, murder mayhem, and lo and behold, our favorite hero walks in. Very well strung together by Irwin Kershner. Not an easy movie to make, especially after the first one's mega success, but Kershner is no mug here and handles it gallantly. One of my dear favorites, it will always have a place on my computer's hard disk to be viewed again and again in my lifetime."

My two hours, or whatever, lost into a worthless oblivion.
4 November 2023
What was this movie actually about? Mexican immigrants and their sob story in the United States? I just could not grasp WB's plot here at all. Was I watching a superhero movie or a mash-up of Power Rangers mixed with Bollywood emotions among a group of Spanish-speaking immigrant people who think doing education brings you in debt ? I was completely alienated from the plot, story, and the general content. If immigration sob stories are what WB wants to delve into, they might as well make a documentary rather than enticing potential customers with this worthless content. My two hours, or whatever, lost into a worthless oblivion.

Cow dung
1 April 2023
Absolute Cow Dung. More can not be said about this one.

The same goes for the Oscar judges or the board that decides which movie is the "best picture". The entire Oscar bandwagon must be dismantled. Both the movie makers and the Oscars are high on LSD or other such psychedelic substances. If the movie maker claims that I did not understand the movie because of my shallow I. Q, then these guys must anyway be banned or banished from making movies that are beyond the capacity of normal human intelligence(considering downcasting my I,Q is right). Our two hours were completely wasted on this tripe, and as somebody mentioned, it was a colossal waste of time, home electricity, apparatus wear and tear, and the family who was coerced by me to watch this because it was an "Oscar's Gem".

I would cordially invite Mr. Will smith to come to the podium and slap the whole oscar board for showering this misery on us.

After watching the Original
5 February 2023
This then only deserves a '1'. So the idea behind it is not to watch the original at all, not even know about it and then with a clean slate watch this one and then give it a review. I could not because I went physically to the movie hall to watch the original in 1990. But I have to counteract my own philosophy because the three-titted bimbo in the first fifteen to twenty minutes of the remake has been lifted as it is from the original! So The 'Original' stands out as a towering Monolith even for the remakers. Seriously, I could not even get through the first twenty minutes of this film and had to shut it just down. Even seeing the 'hero' I kept on asking, where is that middle-aged man in his late thirties, or early forties which is so clearly etched into my mind from the original? Let us keep it straight here, the original was so good, no remakes should be ever made of it ever....if done they will just pale away .. as this one did. A very miserable hand at Philip K. Dick's story.

A-17 was the Jack in the Box
16 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A-14 = Millionaire Playboy, A-15 = Sports Hero, A-16 = Industrial Tycoon, A-17 = Secret Agent.

Had the choices made been for A-14,A-15,A-16 the movie would be jack straightforward. Because no matter which was chosen out of these three, he will still go ahead and save the Planet & would result in a very Linear story. The trick & jack in the Box was choice A-17. This makes the movie go on parallel forky versions . Namely: A)- all is being fantasized on a chair, in a Lab, B)- Quaid is Hauser & Hauser proposes to be Quaid

My take on this flick is it's 'A' & Verhoeven did not (deliberately)show Quaid's face in a suckered-Bliss still on the chair with a smirk on his Face, inside the Lab, right after the Last kiss & famous Little last words: 'well then kiss me quick before you wake up.'.....and why would He ?

Long before Pixar made their shorties, here we have the Master making them already in 1965
1 October 2022
The storyline by 'Nick Riganas' here just hits the spot,So I would recommend everyone to read that one first.

This exactly is happening too in the Russian war with Ukraine, with russia being the absolutely spoiled brat just unable to see the street urchin having his simple unbridled fun!. Sixty-plus years have passed, but the events portrayed are even true today and will be true another 600 years after now too. The envious/destructive human nature inherent in us all portrayed by the Master himself.

And Long before Pixar started to made their shorties, here we have the Master already making them way back in 1965...wow.

An average action Predator Movie
6 August 2022
This is just an average take on the Predator series.

It's much better than its horrific predecessors, so It was watchable right till the end. People should stop recycling the Predator in my opinion, because nothing can Tip or Top the 1987 God-Like original. Some movies are just better to be left alone, just like the 1985 Robocop. These movies just can not be bettered, so no matter how many more Predator sequels and prequels come out, the Legend is still the one from 1987. Ohh..btw the jungle in this one just didn't feel like the jungle, and need I say ....from the one from 1987.

Boring Humdrum
30 July 2022
After reading so many accolades about this one, I watched it. It turned out to be Classic B or C grade movie from the 80s. The Iranians are all bungling goofs, while the two amateurs(protagonists) are smart, efficient, suave and also deadly. Pfff.

Frontal nudity and some dry jokes let me pass the time I spend on this. I remember taking a look at least three times after the first hour on the clock regarding how much of this tediousness was still remaining. It goes on for a good 2 hours. When an hour and a half is the max, I will give this one. Some would say I will have to be in the spirits of the 80s to fathom this, I don't think so. Some 80's movies are still rock solid even today, this one was just a damp squib.

A shabbily produced and hurriedly made movie.

It's clear the makers wanted to cash on the capcom flagship bandwagon but didn't have the patience nor the brains to dig deep and make a good product.

Has Johannes Roberts ever played through a RE game ever? Not like playing for the sake of it but devoting hours to play through a RE game?

And Leon Scott Kennedy is some totally misplaced Indian guy !... what !!

This, for me, was the biggest horror element act in the movie.

if not then just for the use of the eloquent English language

If not then just for the use of the eloquent english language

When V makes his 'Grandiose entrance' he uses a volley of words and phrases to explain himself and his situation to the hapless Evey.

Thsose were some Damn Good usage of English words , many of which I failed to understand and had it looked up later ... what an eloquent use of the english language indeed. I fell immediately in Love with this character ...so even 'IF' the rest of the movie is flawed or uncohorent (which it wasn't) ...I was just swept away :)

Just for the records the vocabulary used that I could not get placed at the first attempt :) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ -sobriquet = nickname -vaudevillian = Vaudeville is a theatrical genre of variety entertainment born in France -vicariously= that you're experiencing something indirectly, -vicissitudes=a change of circumstances or fortune, typically one that is unwelcome or unpleasant.

-Veneer =thin decorative covering of fine wood applied to a coarser wood or other material.

-Vivified=make more lively or interesting; enliven.

-Vexation=irritation -valorous visitation =showing great courage in the face of danger, -vouchsafing = reveal or disclose -volition =the faculty or power of using one's will.

-Votive=offered or consecrated in fulfilment of a vow.

-Veracity =habitual truthfulness.(bonafide) -vichyssoise = a soup typically made of pureed leeks or onions -verbiage =excessively lengthy or technical speech or writing.

-Vox populi = the opinions or beliefs of the majority. (I had some idea here) -Verbose = using or expressed in more words than are needed.(I had some idea here) ==================================================================================================

My english teacher back at school would have been thrilled , and secretly ...so was I.

A gallant effort in Cinema Making with a Hidden Gem of a Role inside.
23 May 2020
A gallant effort in the Hindi remake of the Bengali classic by maker Shakti Samanta. I have not watched the Bengali classic but now after seeing the Hindi counterpart I would. But I am sure I will miss the eloquent costumes, maybe the impressive sets and ofcourse the colored photography. One thing I will like to point out is the way Rajni Sharma carried out this titular Role. Full cudos, and if there was anyone else who was to fill up these shoes, would not have pulled it off any better than her. I just can not see a 'balika bodhu' better than what Rajni Sharma has portrayed. If I will see this movie again in the future I will do so only for this specific quirky, eccentric, fidgety, yet Bold , intelligent and ever so bright ''balika bodhu''.

An Inherent Bad Film
29 April 2020
This movie was just bad. Simple said and enough. why would a small girl get up from her train seat out of nothing , walk to a (to be shot) victim in order to add cheap 'sensation' to the early sniper drawing scene just beats me? This is where the expectations failed and it just mounted ( or rather crashed down) to the abyss by it's very last minute, which was quite painful to sit through by the way . Maybe this film was made keeping in mind the Chinese audience? That's where the major revenues are generated nowadays , aint't so ?

they make it just for the cash Now ...and they suceed
15 March 2020
Awful things include: -messages get transferred with thick black cables. There is no USB concept, no wifi concept,no Bluetooth concept of transferring data in a galaxy that is far more advanced than us earthlings.

-as a matter of convinience, people will rise from the dead as ghostly souls and help the scene out. -In the final sith battle the sequence goes like this -he dies -she dies -he gets alive -she gets alive -he dies again

enough of this non-sence ...but looking at the cash this movie generated I would not be surprised at another meat grinder sausage coming out in the next 2 years. amen.

was entertained seeing Rambo doing what he is best at
22 February 2020
The film storyline is completely Bollywood style. A lot of revenge faces, junk emotions, and spicy relations decked up. The fight sequences are true to Hollywood style. just about every 'enemy' dies a horrible death, either impaled or bludgeoned or perforated or eviscerated and the gleeful List goes on. So just for the fights and stylish disembowelments, I would say a Pure 10 ....but as I put it , for the spicy emotional Bollywood Junk I will give it a 2 ...so my take is a 7 on this. I was entertained seeing Rambo doing what he is best at. and that being : amputate & maraud a whole army single-handedly.

23 November 2019
Pact with the devil and it whets the appetite. Samara Weaving gives a good performance , and at times even better. Some minor flaws are present but a nice change and a breath of fresh air than the regular glut that floods the market nowadays. 6 million spent, 57 million raked in , just says it all for the time. I wouldn't mind to watch this again for one more time. Just for the kicks, and that black humor. Time well spend.

overhyped piece of ham, that just goes on forever.
12 October 2019
Just the fact that hero and his stooges can sport long hair is a nuisance of a direction. Standard army is Short length hair and defined as : hair length that extends no more than 1 inch from the scalp (excluding bangs).

The animal slaughter is something that no one should have gone away with . Copolla does , maybe because in those prehistoric days he could . no peta ?

The film is boring , long, tedious and bases everything on 'insanity' because some American soldiers just can't place and exchange their BBQs, beach living and playboy mates for bullet exchanges in a jungle. My verdict: an absolute overhyped piece of ham, that just goes on forever.
