Bull (2016)
So far, so good!
Despite the rush of people on IMDb who seem strangely desperate to trash this new show; I personally, as a fan of procedural crime dramas and team "puzzle of the week" shows like House M.D, really quite enjoy Bull so far. The first episode had an intriguing premise, the second episode built up the team members' characters enough to at least make them likable, and I think Michael Weatherly is enjoying the role massively and it shows in his winning performance. The psychological aspect of the show is something I don't think we see enough of on television in general and even if some of it is pumped up into quick, flashy computer bites, it still aids the story which is really all it's meant to do. As shows in their infancy go, I think this one is off to a promising start. Bull is a well-shot bit of interesting fun and I will definitely keep watching!
Terriers (2010)
Excellent and not what you'd ever expect!
To put it simply, this show is fantastic and one of the best new shows to come out of the US in years. It has nothing to do with dogs and is in fact a fascinating, well-written, often funny and always heartfelt crime drama about two buddies trying their hand at private investigating so that they can make ends meet. The realistic, multi-dimensional characters are lovable and layered and the well-paced, twisting and turning stories darken menacingly with each new episode without losing any of their charm. My favorite character is Britt because he is a fab combination of lovable sarcastic slacker and troubled master-thief, but the far more complex Hank is equally great and his mentally-disturbed sibling is a solid new addition to the ensemble. Dear FX Network: This show NEEDS to stay on the air!
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
A gorgeous treat for everyone!
MILD SPOILERS AHEAD! It's as simple as this: young or old, see this film! The scenery, direction, actors, and, of course, the story are wonderful. The purity of the original book is upheld and the one or two added bits, such as the Blitz scene at the very beginning of the film, work extremely well. The child actors are all decent enough, all of them able to carry their scenes and successfully convey the courage and heartbreak of their characters. Georgie Henley and Skandar Keynes as Emdmund and Lucy are particularly convincing and when Lucy weeps for her fallen friends it melted even my cold cynical heart - so don't worry. As for the adult thespians, Tilda Swinton is positively glacial as the White Witch, James McAvoy is perfect as the sweet, tortured Mr Tumnus - and his chemistry with Henley is excellent - and Jim Broadbent makes good use of his limited screen time as the Professor. Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan settles comfortably into his familiar role of kind mentor. New Zealand is apparently THE place to film one's fantasy epic these days and indeed, it's advantages are made very clear in this film. 'Narnia' (as most people are probably referring to it as) will thrill and it will delight and it should warm the hearts of everyone but the most bitter cynics. I went to see this film with eight friends of varying dispositions, some of whom adore the book and some of whom have never read it before and we all enjoyed it very much. Seeing a book so beloved by the nation brought to life on cinema is very satisfying and with Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings et al, it is becoming a regular occurrence. Let's make the most of this new so-called Age of the Fantasy Film and be thankful that we got to be here for its time on the big screen.
So, come on, indulge your children and your inner child and buy some hot chocolate and some Turkish delight and get down to the cinema now!
Band of Brothers (2001)
See it!
I'd just like to state that this is NOT Saving Private Ryan the sequel - it's much better then that! I discovered Band of Brothers by chance a few weeks ago and since then I've had to resist the temptation to watch it again and again whenever I have spare time! My favorite film genre is War and has been for years and this spectacular series just tops everything i have experienced before. It slowly draws you into the thick of the gritty action and heartbreaking conflict, through the eyes of the brave young men of Easy Company, paratroopers in the 101st Airborne; throughout World War II. The memories of surviving veterans, both joyous and painful, are delivered to you by characters you grow to love and respect. And this is because you can feel their companionship and their respect for each other leaping off the screen. It has everything you want to see in an epic TV series like this one: sacrifice, black humor, graphic battle scenes, courage, joy-riding, shocks, tension and yes, even sex.
Overall, the cast is superb, despite lacking 'big' stars, and, perhaps unlike other large casts of soldiers, they are NOT apparent clones of each other. Before the fifth episode I was getting genuinely upset when one of these men were killed or wounded in action, and by the eighth even the beautifully done opening credits were getting me choked up. If you like war films and action with a real sense of the courage and spirit behind it then you have to see this! Come on girls, you too - even if only for the dozens of good-looking men!
