House of Helixx (2023)
What a trip.
So much to watch, so much to hear. It moved me through space and time, a flowing transcendental experience. It's now just beginning to tour the film festivals so look out for this at your local Film Festival. You won't be disappointed. And even if you are it's only 17 minutes. Filled with Easter eggs you really have to watch this multiple times. And there's a lot of emotion connected to this film dealing with trauma and how to express it metaphorically. This is an adventure you should all go and check out on your own. Animations and masks? Yes and yes. I will watch this group closely to see what their next project is.
The Return of Elder Pingree -- Memoir of a Departed Mormon (2019)
Moving and filled with heart.
A moving portrait of a man coming to terms with his identity and his place within the world and his former religion. We all hope to do good in our lives but does the good we do really last? And over time how does it effect the people we have come in contact with? And what if your own beliefs have shifted? If you have ever had the Mormons come knocking on your door and you wondered what it was like from their perspective The Return of Elder Pingree will give you that insight. But you might have to wait. I came across this at the Santa Cruz Film festival. See it when you can.
Stanley Cuba (2007)
I miss the video stores!
I find it hard to see movies where you can't predict the story and ending. Stanley Cuba is one of those wild rides where you have no clue what will happen next. This is the kind of film that makes me miss the video stores. I could see the clerk picking this odd ball comedy out for me and any Stanley Kubrick fan.
Sidewalk Entrepreneurs (2019)
A beautiful and unique perspective.
It's easy to overlook the people who pedal their wares in the streets. This film takes an in-depth look at those street vendors in Mexico City. It's not just about there ingenuity, passion, and the will to survive in a sprawling metropolis. It's about adapting to your surroundings and the political powers that be.
Camp Wedding (2019)
I love this movie, how could you not!
I love this movie. Not just because I grew up watching slasher flicks and wonder how things would play out if you added cell phones into the mix but because its darn funny! When it comes to writing its important to keep the audience guessing. I don't want to watch films where I can predict the ending at the start. I was surprised all they way through. Please note that I watched this at this years Indy Fest so you might have to wait to see it in the theaters.
Dinosaurs in a Mining Facility (2018)
A well told story can make the lowest budget film great.
If I was teaching film I would show this to every class. The writing is fantastic and I would watch anything these filmmakers put out. I was lucky to catch this at the Indy Fest so you might have to wait until its fest run is done before you can find it online. But boy oh boy once it is out there it will be an instant cult underground classic. On the web their are elements that artist make for free use. They scooped up just about everything and mix it up in to a well crafted film. Funny? Absolutely! There is just so much to tell you but I don't want to give anything away. Let me leave you with this. Next time there is a big budget film with bad writing just think about these guys. No money all heart makes a fantastic movie.
Now or Never (2019)
A story that unfolds naturally.
This isn't just a story about break ups. Its the dynamics that are in play between people and how we effect each other. Relationships are not always easy to define and moving on can mean different things to you. The story is convincing and I can't help wonder if it really played out in reality in some dive bar someplace. Well done. Go see.
Kill Al (2018)
The perfect film at the right time.
I came across Kill Al at the Fort Myers Beach International Film fest this April. And I have to say that it wasn't what I expected. It could be the fight back film for #MeToo with a mix of si-fi It kept revealing more and more. I am trying hard not to give anything away since that is a lot of the magic of this film. But after talking with its star and one of the filmmakers Christine Verleny their are plans to make this into a series. I am already a fan and will be watching. If you get a chance check it out. Its only touring the film fests for now.
Valmentaja (2018)
Capitalism vs Anarchy
I caught this film at the Snowdance Independent film festival in Germany. This film puts you inside the head of an egomaniac as he chases after more power, more money, more of everything. By giving us his childhood and early relationships you can't help but feel for this guy. The film is fast paced just the way I like them. Its an epic story and you should check it out.
Julia Blue (2018)
Do you like movie with heart? Then check out Julia Blue.
I was at Snowdance film fest in Germany when I had the chance to watch this movie. I went into it not knowing much about it other then this was a love story in a war zone. You go from the city to the country side and by the end you feel as if you know the characters that inhabit this film and the Ukraine itself. I highly recommend this movie.
Kahlschlag (2018)
Friends? Enemies? Lovers? Where does it start and how does it end?
I was at the Snowdance film fest in Germany when I had the chance to watch this movie. The filmmaking is top notch, acting spot on, and the twist make this a well done flick. At points you are on the edge of your seat.
Datsche (2018)
When will this be made into a TV show!!!!
I watched this lovely gem at the Snowdance film festival in Germany. The story is full of heart and I just want to see what happens next. I think you can only see it in film fest for now so keep an eye out for it.
The Dolls of Lisbon (2011)
Fast paced documentary that tracks an international group of artists as they prepare for a group show in Lisbon, Portugal
This fast paced documentary covers a lot of territory in a short time. The film includes great animation, stop-camera action and an original soundtrack. About 100 handmade dolls, with a blank canvas covering, were distributed to artists in New York, Portugal, Germany, France, Italy and Equator. Each artist made their doll into a unique piece of art, reflective of their individual artistic style and statement. The film interviews some of the artists in their studios, capturing their struggles and achievements. The artists then came together in Lisbon, Portugal to exhibit their art dolls in an international group show. The film was produced under the auspices of the Antagonist Movement, Inc., a collective of artists, filmmakers and writers based in New York City. It demonstrates what can be achieved by creative people committed to their art and their community of fellow artists. Inspirational and entertaining, this film should be watched by anyone who is an artist, wants to be an artist or simply loves art and good films. People who enjoyed Exit Through the Gift Shop or Style Wars will love this film.
This Is Berlin Not New York (2008)
Amazing Art Film
This film is amazing and has it all. It makes you feel like you are right there, as this rambunctious, fun, off-beat group of New York artists join forces with their Berlin counterparts. Always bumping up against (and beyond) conventional boundaries, the American and German artists create original artwork in front of your eyes in some very unusual places. This film has another whole level, beyond the pure visual, as the artists discuss and critique Western contemporary art. The film captures the spontaneity and energy of these young, emerging artists who feel comfortable and confident in their artistic skills and visions. In watching the film, you feel the dynamics emerging between the artists in a positive way, as they strive to take their art to a higher level. The artists feed off of each others' creativity and continuously push each other to achieve more. In a sense, these artists have outgrown the need for senior mentors or critics and have developed a Utopian world for themselves where the artists accept each other as peers and competent equals, each of whom have chosen to explore their artistic interests in different modes. After watching this film, you will feel liberated and inspired to follow your own artistic interests without worrying about outside acceptance. The original musical score and animation ties this film together in a wonderful, exuberant package.
