Hemisphere (2023)
Creepy clever indie
Hemisphere is an ambitious independent sci-fi with a strong lead actor - Paige Rion. Being an indie, it relies a bit more heavily on sound design than visuals, so you will likely not be blown away by the FX. Some of the sets lack a space-age feel. Still, the story is tight, centered around a space station Alta Mira orbiting Mercury. After an accident on Alta Mira, an investigator, Sandra, rockets out to discover what truly happened. Not only does Sandra uncover the mystery of Alta Mira, she also encounters a loan survivor, herself an enigma. Sandra keeps her cool throughout each plot twist and generally carries the movie.
Overall, the movie has a few slow moments, as expected with introspective sci-fi, but it's intelligent and well-acted.
Crash (2004)
Shockingly Overrated
I can't believe all the reviews I'm reading. And not just on IMDb but in the printed press too. People seem to love this movie, and I don't understand.
I felt it was a solid movie with excellent music and cinematography. Yet, if that was all that mattered, Phantom Menace would be an Oscar winner.
It seemed to me that there were very few original ideas in the script. The racial plot lines were done better in "Grand Canyon", "Do the Right Thing" and "Boyz n the Hood".
If you haven't seen any of the above movies, perhaps "Crash" will open up your eyes to the depths of the racial divide in this country. Otherwise, you're better off with something a little more subtle and original.
