Amazing film really driven by the powerful, yet wordless performance from the inimitable Vincent Gallo. I think it can be enjoyed on a couple of very different levels, such as a pure survival thriller or as a smart political allegory. Because everyone can take something from it, both movie buffs and casual viewers should definitely check out this film (although I wouldn't recommend it for date night due to certain infamous scenes!). The minimal style is engrossing - I was hooked from start to finish by the sparse landscapes and soundtrack. It actually really reminded me of Rambo, in a funny sort of way. Although much less heavy handed.

Good film, great fun

This is a really cute little film that will leave you feeling great, as well as hungry! All of the food looks awesome, and I like the way that they talk about it with such passion. Perfect film for chilling at home with some Indian takeout.
Aasif Mundvi is of course awesome as the caustic sarcastic Senior Muslim Correspondent on the Daily Show, but he shows a different side to his acting as the determined but troubled Samir. Naseeruddin Shah is brilliant as the taxi driver/chef. I loved his references to this crazy life that he has lead, and the way he really demonstrates passion and skill at cooking. Madhur jaffrey was a nice surprise as well. I have only seen her on the cover of cookbooks and jars of sauce, I didn't realize she could act as well! The story is simple but well told. You really feel for Aasif, and this is what carries the film along. Definitely recommend buying it on DVD when it comes out Jan 24th.

Portrait of a hero
6 December 2011
Wavy Gravy is a man for all time. He's been a hero for fifty years, committing himself fully to social projects and to politics and to social change. The guy is just a moral inspiration, and he's funny and smart as well. The film suits his style as well I think. It is random and funny and uncompromising. At the same time is very carefully made, definitely a tribute to an amazing character. It's time that everyone knew that Wavy Gravy is more than just an awesome ice cream flavour! It also gives a great retrospective on the 60s counterculture; Wavy Gravy is a man who embodied the movement, and even the staunchest republican must respect his commitment and his values.
Hot Coffee
(2011)
Very important that you see this film!

I was also one of the cynics about the Stella Lieback case (the woman who sued MacDonalds after spilling hot coffee on herself), but this film really opened my eyes to what really happened and the wider issues surrounding the case. Frankly, the situation is scary! The idea that corporations have the power to get elected judges who will be sympathetic to their own cause is nothing new, but to hear just how they go about it was astonishing. Also, after hearing about Jamie Leigh Jones and the Halliburton case, I'm definitely checking my work contract for mandatory arbritration clauses. This film is so important, for any consumer anywhere. Another indication of the stranglehold that American corporations have over us.
