Why so many bad reviews? Is it because it's not deep rich and have loads of handsome men and s******* on the side. Basic no frills what you're left with after the fight. Some awful reviews on here just because they can't understand the idea of this whole film. I'm not a veteran. So I don't know the facts of War. But I will have a guess and say this is somewhere near it in the aftermath. If you want fancy Dan stuff then don't watch it. If you want the truth then maybe you should. A better review said it was low budget. I'm not convinced it looked quite realistic to me. I thought most of the scenes looked realistic . As I would imagine it to be. Did I mention I'm not a veteran how would I know.

Came across this on Talking Pictures. Expected the routine propaganda war film. But not so I found this film showed the quite tough life these fellas had to go through. From start to finish, it did not pull any punches. And have to remark on the wonderful sets and how dangerous they must have been to perform in. Life was tough back then and you will find this film shows how so. Get stuck in and enjoy.

Poor, desperate degraded. Someone pushed to the limit. Uncaring governments in an area that has had many those. Thatcher and her croanys and all the other Tories that messed with Scotlands poorest areas. No wonder they away from the UK who can blame. A good film with a good dialogue on the conditions at the time. Not much better now. Well worth a watch.

Brilliant from start to finish.can't understand low review of some.Excellent plot start middle and end.

But a winner in many ways,unless your short sighted like one review on here.You will need a bit of imagination and remember when this was made 1954. Bill Owen star of many British films of that time yes compo,good solid turn in this one,like many of his films.All ok performances and a believable and ok story worth a watch.Watch out for lame reviewers that can't see beyond their short nose.

Good compact little film with sub plots and story's to tell.Very poignant war grave visit near the beginning . Some good British actors on show. I'm not sure why some dimwits watch old films if they want racey big budget productions.Good British film well worth a watch. Enjoy.

Oh and how they told and put this together. Coogan really takes this role to his heart.Humans inhumanity to another human is sometimes bewildering. Must watch film.

Simply excellent british comedy at its best . Just do not make comedy like this anymore. A mix of nostalgia and fun couldn't be better.

The best one of these I've seen.Good lead characters and story really enjoyed.
