Call It Love (2023)

Where do I start?
26 July 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This was just a punishing experience from start to finish! Why did I watch the whole thing? Because other reviews said it was a slow burner and I was hoping it would catch fire at some point; it never did. Don't be fooled like I was - this is just unbelievably slow, monotonous, depressing, even unwittingly comical at times and I don't know who or what to blame for it. Was it the one-note performances from the main leads, lacking in light and shade? Was it the ridiculous storyline of adults behaving like primary school kids when faced with an issue, instead of trying to solve it with a bit of smarts like most grown ups do? Was it the unflattering wardrobe, hair and makeup choices? There were so many creative choices made that made NO sense:

1. The female lead acts like the burden of solving all of her family's issues lies with her, when she is only the middle child; while her mother is alive and well and her elder sister too.

2. The FL has no plan to retrieve their family home but only thinks of taking revenge; yet she doesn't even try to take revenge from the person who took her home away and goes after someone related instead.

3. The male lead carries around a bag with a frayed shoulder strap throughout the entire drama, without replacing it with even a cheap one from the market; yet his suit is always neatly pressed, his face clean shaven and his hair perfectly blow dried.

4. The female lead (problem middle child) tells off her siblings for not living their lives to her standards but she doesn't apply those same high standards to herself; like putting herself in the awkward position of falling for her stepbrother.

5. Once her mum re-enters the seen, this loud and o problem child suddenly clams up and decides to just let the real grown ups deal with all the real problems.

These are just a handful of things I can recall but the actual list of sins committed by this drama is much longer. I can understand wanting to create a certain "mood" with the cinematography and art direction but that's not enough to sustain interest. I caught myself drifting off to sleep many times or just scrolling on my phone to keep my mind occupied. It's a pity, because the leads are quite capable and I have seen them do better in other dramas, with a better script and perhaps more empowering direction. The supporting cast give some wonderful performances, especially the stepmother, so it's a travesty that the leads weren't allowed to shine the same. The drama starts off sad and then just gets sadder. The saddest thing is that they only let the lead actor show his wide, handsome smile, right at the end.

It will hit you where it hurts... in a good way!
8 June 2024
I don't know what the negative reviewers were expecting. This is not a light and fluffy rom com. Don't let the kooky title and intro confuse you. This is a love story for the ages. An epic, heart wrenching love that is worth sacrificing friends and family for. A passionate love that is all consuming, transcending all of society's expectations.

The male and female leads are fully committed to their roles and the chemistry is palpable between them. Moon Sang Min as the ambitious and suspicious brother-in-law to be is the shining star, although the leading lady Jeong Jeon Seo (from "Burning" fame) holds her own. This is by-and-large a family melodrama, with the romance angle building and taking over the storyline.

9/10 on the acting, directing, styling and soundtrack. Writing left a bit to be desired but all is forgiven by the ending. Don't miss this amazing drama - it will give you all the feels! I'm going to watch it again soon, just to see the full range of emotions flitting across Moon Sang Min's face. Who is this guy? He could be South Korea's James Bond - smooth, suave and sweet. A deadly combination!!

Almost too scary to watch
6 January 2024
I'm not a fan of gore or "jump scares" for the sake of it. I'm a fan of thrillers and psychological horrors. And this is where this movies delivers - in telling a suspenseful story and telling it to completion; with a beginning, middle and end. Those reviewers that talk about it being two different styles in one movie don't understand the concept of light and shade. Or that the thrill of a rollercoaster ride is in the plateau and false sense of relaxation just before the fall. Of course the protagonist should have seen it coming but if they did, it wouldn't be such an entertaining film. If you're so invested that you end up screaming at the screen, "don't do it!!"; you know you've got a good movie.

Love and respect from a Buddhist
27 September 2023
I'm a practicing Buddhist and I loved this movie! It presents a certain point of view - a Christian one - but it does so very well. The dialogue is riveting, the main actor is in his element; and no scene is wasted in telling a cohesive story. What it is, is great filmmaking - something that rarely comes out of Hollywood these days. So ignore the haters and watch it. You won't waste your time or lose your soul. You can suspend belief and enjoy a great thriller, just like you would a scifi or fantasy. Congratulations to all involved in making a fine movie - even if it misses out on award season!

Lost potential
1 August 2022
This is a great melodrama for the suspense factor. It delivers a complex plot in just 8 episodes that reels you in from the get go. However it all falls apart at the end, with characters and situations appearing out of nowhere. The last scene in particular is not believable but makes for a happy ending. The highlights of the show are the hero and the villainess. The two leads' romance could have been explored more. There was certainly some chemistry there. Too bad!

Thought Provoking!
8 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Very interesting premise and the lead actor is a joy to watch! Is Multiple Personality Disorder really a disease that needs curing or are the split personalities all sentient beings deserving of a continued existence? What happens if two very different personalities embodying the same physical male body, fall in love with the same woman? Who has the right to love and to live? These are some of the questions raised by this drama. A very enjoyable tale until about the last few episodes, where it becomes a bit anticlimactic due to one of the relationships being left a little too late to develop. The chemistry between the leads is also not quite where it should be but overall definitely worth a watch just to see Hyun Bin in action as both Jekyll and Hyde!
