Umi ga kikoeru (1993)
Haters gonna hate hate hate hate
I don't really understand all the dislike and confusion for this one. This is probably the most humanistic, raw, and relatable Ghibli film of them all. Yes, the characters are irrational and awkward and selfish and prideful but they are sweet and generous and hopeful too; which is exactly how I remember being at that age. This film evoked some real deep nostalgia and unlocked old memories I hadn't thought about in so long, which is a rare thing for a movie to be able to do for me.
I love the fantasy worlds that Ghibli creates as much as the next person but I'm so glad they chose to tell this story. Would like to see them try another like it someday.
As Far as the Eye Can See (2013)
A Two Year Commitment
From a critical standpoint:
The film follows the journey of one man who meets, in a series of events, characters who seem to be all interconnected. Flashbacks help the story unfold but the ending is rather left open to viewer interpretation.
From a personal standpoint:
Every day on set of this film was a new experience. A lot of challenges were posed with the weather and with people's schedules conflicting. But it is always a great feeling to sit back and watch the completed project after being involved - especially the behind the scenes features included on the DVD. It also shows people how a film can be made (albeit hardly a budget) with a dedicated cast and crew. It is the first production, I'm sure, of many yet to come from the RhinoVison team.
