I get that this movie does not want to be a deep and well thought out character drama where you can spend pages analysing the complex plot, and that's totally fine... but what does it want to be, then? For a comedy, I found the humour to be insufficient, lacking or clashing with the tone at that moment. In terms of romance, also lacking starting with the fact that Reynolds broke his back and then bluntly got told (yes, I went there) that he left her and she wants to know why. Action, there are some interesting moments, most notably the dump truck sequence, which is also the best example of the movie being a tribute to stuntmen I would say, but also too few interesting action scenes apart from that one. However being a tribute to stuntmen, especially by having a stuntman getting involved in a bizarre and nonsensical plot, is a bit lacking to be the basis of a full movie it seems. During most of the movie I was out of touch with what the movie wanted me to feel. Should I try to follow the nonsensical plot? Should I try to be brain off and just admire the action and stunts? Should I care about the flat and unsympathetic characters and their chemistry free "relationship"? This can be an issue with a movie that tries to be too many genres at once (see e.g. Shaun of the Dead for how to do this right).
However, to close with, I will at least give this movie credit for, indeed, not being an over the top CGI mess and/or being more concerned with a message (i.e. The Message) than anything else.
