Here is a highly entertaining work that deserved more notice but was overlooked in all award categories in 2002. Beautifully crafted, photographed and performed, it's full of surprises and truths, not only about "the choices we make", as has already been said, but more specifically about the fragility of the assumptions that can be made about relationships. Major characters Garcia, Jagger and Margulies have never been better (or actually as good); Coburn contributes (in the span of what is little more than a cameo) a perfect, touching swan song to his career, and Huston is bewitching and riveting in a even smaller role. This has all the makings of a cult film!
This is a very raw and forthright film in its depiction of modern German youth's vulnerability to Neo-Nazi persuasion and sexual abandon. It's very adult and very disturbing, but exceptionally well-acted and produced. How about a DVD release?
A film strong and beautiful enough to live in my memory many years after the one time I saw it in college. It presents a highly atmospheric tapestry of comedy, drama and sweeping photography depicting life in postwar Germany, and is eminently deserving of release on video (or DVD). Its emergence in revival is extremely rare; what goes?
