In spite of the physical attractiveness of the heroine, I still felt as if I had consumed a large quantity of lacquer. I expected this movie to be bad enough to leave me in hysterics, but unfortunately, it's mediocrity in the field of suckitude left me disappointed there. The lack of continuity was just a disappointment, because the movie left me believing it to be vaguely redemptive. But, the girl who played Julie was cute. Very cute in fact. That's why I gave this a 3 instead of a 2.5. I feel it is 25% as good as a film of it's nature can be. Hopefully, she rose above such tragedies as this, to contribute a .5 to a movie that would provide a 6 or 7.
Brilliant, sensual. It's a psychological jigsaw puzzle to challenge even the most erudite of viewers into figuring it out. The 5.5 was highly undeserved, particularly due to the presence of the divine miss Tilda Swinton, intended to play an icy and unfeeling character. Eve is very real and in our fear of what could happen if we let go of our heart is stronger by far as a character than those in Cruel Intentions which was recommended to those who enjoyed Female Perversions.
Fun is personally my favorite film. This is a risky film to stand by with a claim like that, but in my opinion Alicia Witt has never been greater and before taking on more fun, low brow roles, proved herself an incredibly gifted actress. Bonnie's psychosis (or perhaps unsettling lack thereof) is brought to life with a combination of intensity and whimsy and like similarly antiheroic characters leaves us questioning where we are morally. You cannot advocate the behavior, but there's a potency to the role that makes you almost excuse it in your weaker moments. Renee Humphrey is an interesting counterbalance to Witt in that sympathy is easier to find with her character, though I must admit that the personal magnetism is most visible in Bonnie. To quote Bonnie, "Fun is number one".
