Imaginary Order (2019)
Holy. Moly.
Debra Eisenstadt's fourth film is as bold and fascinating as her first three. A compelling look into a deeply troubled group of characters. A shocking screenplay, also by Eisenstadt, is surprising at every turn. She coaxes fantastic and nuanced performances from the entire cast, especially from Graham Sibley and Christine Woods. Not for the faint of heart.
Paper Man (2009)
Awesome
What an inventive feature debut for this killer directing duo. Paper Man successfully manages to mix big concept with the feel of an intimate character driven film. A fun, inventive, drama told through a comic frame. Great performances from the whole star-studded cast. A well- observed, tightly knit spiral into a troubled man's psyche, the film takes off fast and doesn't stop until its surprising and tense conclusion. It's refreshing to see indie-style filmmaking coming from such an accomplished cast and crew. Thumbs up for an original and moving soundtrack. Thumbs up for unique concept. Thumbs up for a great, creative partnership from its creators. Netflix it. Amazon it. Enjoy it.
Sunny & Share Love You (2007)
Finally!
I first saw this film at a screening in Los Angeles and was blown away. So often low-budget indies falter, either from a lack of story, bad acting, or chaotic production.
Sunny & Share Love you is a rare exception. It is so clearly the bold and un-censored vision of its co-creators, Michele Mulroney & Micah Schraft (who are also the film's stars and the writers of the dozen or so songs that make up the hysterical, hummable, and sad soundtrack. It sort of redefines emo in a sick AND inventive way. Who knew this was possible?)
Now to the nitty gritty. The writing is wild, inventive, dark, gross, funny, sad, demented, surprising, and seems to actually have something to say about love, friendship, family, and art. A tall order for a mocumentary. But it scores. Big time.
An ensemble of actors, led by Mulroney and Schraft have an amazing performative, yet believable style that can only be compared to a Christopher Guest cast at its best. They hit every emotion and mine every moment for comedy and pathos with Spinal Tap-ian bravado.
The songs from the characters' reunion concept album are used geniusly to move the story and are shot in a cinematic style that combines camp cliché and total invention (another impressive achievement.)
I recommend everyone and anyone who is inspired by truly original filmmaking, is interested in a new kind of musical, and who has a dark, dark sense of humor see this film IMMEDIATELY!
The Quiet (2005)
The Quiet is the best film of 2006
The Quiet is the best film of 2006. It may be the best film of this century. People seem to have missed the point of the film and also the point of cinema. Wake up people. Film as an art form is not cookie cutter. The Quiet is a delicious cookie we so rarely get to taste. If we didn't venture outside of our boxes, how could we find David Lynch, Heathers, Altman. We couldn't. So to all of you people out there too scared to see art reflect life, maybe you should look more closely at your lives. Ihave made an homage to the film and posted it at you tube. Check it out, yo.
Go to you tube, type in "The Quieter" and you'll find it.
