Joint Body (2011)
Good acting, but no real follow through
Joint Body follows a recently paroled man with nothing to fall back as he tries to stay on the straight and narrow. It's a plot that has been used countless times, but it has produced some good films if done well. The acting is done very well, the directing is very good, and the writer wants to make the film more character driven than conflict driven. A lot of newer films and series have done this recently and it had led to some great cinema. Unfortunately, while joint body does touch on many things, it never really follows through enough with anything. We meet the main character Nick's brother and his wife and touch on a little of their history, his ex wife and his daughter whom he has no contact with, but it only briefly touches on these things. While we learn of a few stories and see the basics of their relationships, nothing ever really drives home into why these characters came to be who they are or what makes them tick. It's not like by the later part of the film you will feel like you understand the characters and can predict how they would react and feel to situations. For a film based on characters more than conflicts, this leaves it feeling a little light and empty. Instead of really focusing on one relationship and going into it, we pick up tiny bits of history with the secondary characters. There isn't a super strong ending that wraps everything up either. Open endings can be great, but it didn't leave much of what would be expected to follow, nor a feeling that the story would go on and on. By the end, it felt like we were still just in the middle of a story that didn't really go very far in any direction. If you are on Netflix and have seen almost everything like me it's something you can give a run through, but it won't wow you, evoke any strong emotions, or make you think very much.
Wrong Cops (2013)
An absurd comedy for those with a very particular type of humor
This movie really wasn't for me, and I think that will be the case for most people. Those who do like this style may really enjoy it, but it's definitely not for your typical film fan. The movie has no real structure, plot, character development or anything, but at the same time it doesn't want to. It is totally absurdest. Nothing is believable, it has an odd feel the whole time and none of the characters are even remotely believable. Like I said before however, it doesn't want to. Its not that the movie tried to be a good movie and failed, it just didn't really try to be a movie at all. It's just a bunch of ridiculous things going on with ridiculous characters. For those who enjoy that type of thing, it may be very funny, but I didn't know what to expect when I started watching the film and it definitely wasn't what I was looking for. There was no story to really follow or get into, and since there's no real character development it isn't able to make any kind of humor based on the characters. I will say that a couple times I did laugh at just how ridiculous some of the dumb jokes were (not dumb as in bad, just purposefully random and absurd thing), but there just wasn't enough substance to the movie to leave me walking away thinking that I enjoyed the time I had just spent. I think this could have done better as a short film online or something so people could be more understanding and open to it, but since I found it on Netflix as a normal movie in the comedy section, I was expecting more. If you like adult swim and that type of totally random and absurd humor you will probably enjoy this movie. If you don't like that and are looking for a real movie with some meat to it whether comedy or not, you should probably skip over this one.
Stevie TV (2012)
Only a couple shows in my LIFETIME have been this bad!!
This show is just god awful. I was watching it, actually really surprised at how bad it was. That has only happened to me a couple of times in my life, where I am watching something that is just SUCH a trainwreck that it's hard to believe. I cant even really understand how it is so bad! How does no one realize?? It is basically one of those horrible youtube weekly shows by a random person who wants a lot of subscribers on youtube/facebook/etc. trying to be really funny with horrible acting, pop culture references, and jokes that are so immature, slapsticky, and one dimensional. It's just, look I'm acting like this person and I'm so dumb and silly. There is absolutely nothing clever, or things that make you think and say "that's so true", or anything past watching with your brain turned off. It's usually making fun of terrible reality shows with TV stars, but this show is far worse than theirs. I couldn't tell if this show was real, or a mockery of the terrible sketch shows that have come out since Chappelle's Show. Honestly, you might want to watch an episode just to see how bad it truly is. There's bad, and then there's oh my god this is so embarrassing and cringe-worthy bad. This is the latter; this is the "yo babe, come look at how BAD this is! Oh my god it's making me CRINGE!" bad. I never even wrote a review on here before, but I just saw a commercial for season two and I thought "what the?" and had to leave a review. How VH1 doesn't realize this is the absolute worst show on television is beyond me, but I guess no one cared enough to vocalize that it should be off the air.
